AbstractExtensive offshore meadows ofHalimeda incrassataare documented for the first time in sandy bottoms of La Palma, Canary Islands.Halimeda incrassataforms dense sublittoral assemblages between 20 and 55 m, but isolated populations occur down to 65 m depth. This species currently spreads over an area of 9.14 ha. Population coverage varies with depth, with the highest values at 35–40 m and an average cover of 62.34%. The calcified segments ofH. incrassataact as a stable substratum in these soft bottoms for the growth of other macroalgae, such as the rhodophytesLophocladia trichocladosandCottoniella filamentosa. Specimens reach lengths of up to 10 cm, shorter than individuals from the Caribbean. Although it is difficult to ascertain whether this species is a recent introduction, there is evidence of a correlation between the increase in population coverage and recent ocean warming, constituting another example of the tropicalization of the marine flora of this region.

Siphonophores are one of the least known gelatinous zooplankters in the tropical waters of the Northwestern Atlantic. Most of the regional knowledge about their diversity and distribution is based on surface samples (0–200 m). Siphonophores were collected from oceanic waters off the Mexican Caribbean across an expanded sampling range (0–940 m) during two cruises and were taxonomically examined. A total of 47 siphonophore species were recorded, of these, 14 had not been found in this sector of the Caribbean Sea and 10 represent new records for the Caribbean Basin. The number of species currently known from the western Caribbean is increased from 42 to 56. Some of these species also represent new records for the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic region. The greatest relative increase was observed among species of Lensia, five of which are exclusively deep-living forms dwelling below 300 m. A revised, expanded checklist of the siphonophores of the Western Caribbean is also provided. These results confirm the need of further deep sampling to increase our understanding of Caribbean siphonophore diversity.

AbstractThe late Cretaceous crinoid Uintacrinus socialis Grinnell, which is a potential marker for the base of the Upper Santonian Substage, is reported from the Inoceramus Shales of St Ann's Great River Inlier on the north coast of Jamaica. This is the first record of this species from the Caribbean region and marks its lowest latitudinal distribution reported to date. The Inoceramus Shales are a deep-water clastic mudstone unit which extends the palaeoecological distribution of this crinoid. Uintacrinus socialis proves that the Inoceramus Shales are of Santonian age and will help constrain correlations between the shallow-water platform carbonate/volcaniclastic facies found in the arc successions of the Caribbean and the international chronostratigraphy.
