The aim of the article is to concretize the concept of political ideology in the aspect of its matrix structure and in the context of the cognitive-evolutionary approach. Based on Michael Frieden's morphological approach to the analysis of ideological consciousness, the concept of cognitive-ideological matrices is introduced, which allows us to describe the process of transition from proto-ideological to ideological concepts proper, especially at the level of individual consciousness. The identification of the ideological concept as the main “gene” of conceptual variability and inheritance made it possible to describe the main parameters of the evolution of political ideologies and associate it with changes taking place at the individual consciousness level. The described concept was tested in a series of sociological studies of youth consciousness conducted in 2015-2016 and 2018-2020. As a result of the study, it was possible to first identify the “zero level” of ideology, at which the minds of young respondents are potentially open to the influence of diverse and often mutually exclusive ideological orientations, and second, to pinpoint the changes that have occurred in the cognitive ideological matrices of Rostov-on-Don students over the past five years. This study was conducted by scientists from the southern Federal University.

Ecological status assessment of watercourses is based on the calculation of quality indices using pollution sensitivity of targeted biological groups, including diatoms. The determination and quantification of diatom species is generally based on microscopic morphological identification, which requires expertise and is time-consuming and costly. In Europe, this morphological approach is legally imposed by standards and regulatory decrees by the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Over the past decade, a DNA-based molecular biology approach has newly been developed to identify species based on genetic criteria rather than morphological ones (i.e. DNA metabarcoding). In combination with high throughput sequencing technologies, metabarcoding makes it possible both to identify all species present in an environmental sample and to process several hundred samples in parallel. This article presents the results of two recent studies carried out on the WFD networks of rivers of Mayotte (2013–2018) and metropolitan France (2016–2018). These studies aimed at testing the potential application of metabarcoding for biomonitoring in the context of the WFD. We discuss the various methodological developments and optimisations that have been made to make the taxonomic inventories of diatoms produced by metabarcoding more reliable, particularly in terms of species quantification. We present the results of the application of this DNA approach on more than 500 river sites, comparing them with those obtained using the standardised morphological method. Finally, we discuss the potential of metabarcoding for routine application, its limits of application and propose some recommendations for future implementation in WFD.

Black duck (Anas rubripes) numbers have declined over the past several decades in conjunction with a gradual eastward range expansion of the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). Introgressive hybridization has been proposed as a principal cause of this decline. We studied a sympatric population of black ducks and mallards to determine the relative contribution of forced copulation and mixed pairs to hybrid production and test the common belief that mallards are more aggressive than black ducks. Mixed pairs (14% of all pairs), not interspecific forced copulation, likely accounted for the 2% hybridization rate on the study area. Sexual and hostile aggression was greater among mallards than black ducks prior to the establishment of territories, but thereafter was similar between the two species.

The status of the Maltese endemic Romulea melitensis remained doubtful since its description by Beguinot in 1907, primarily because plants with the morphological characters as referred in the diagnosis have not been substantiated in situ. A sand crocus with the combination of a smallish, dark violet corolla with a yellow throat and perianth segments up to 1.5 mm wide have never been witnessed in the Maltese Islands. A detailed analysis of the protologue and the type of R. melitensis has resulted that when Beguinot examined the 30-year-old exsiccatae, two important characters were misinterpreted, leading to the current ambiguous status of R. melitensis. A detailed account accompanied by specific illustrations and tabulated datasets are given to address this taxonomic misconception. In effect, R. melitensis has wider tepals and the dark colour of the corolla referred in the protologue is exhibited only at the abaxial surface of the tepals in some individuals. Under this adjusted morphological approach, ten populations corresponding to R. melitensis have been found in the Maltese islands, three of which matching completely with the taxon’s lectotype. In addition, morphological, palynological and chorological studies on these populations strongly suggest that R. melitensis is a hybrid between R. columnae and R. variicolor - a Siculo-Maltese endemic species. An identification key to the species of Romulea occurring or reported in the past from the Maltese Islands is supplied in this work.

The widespread and lasting effect of acupuncture suggests the mediatation of humoral factor(s). Controlled clinical and experimental investigations done by Chinese researchers during the past three decades lend support to this assumption. Electrophysiological and histochemical studies denote the involvement of hypothalamus and pituitary in acupuncture. Acupuncture causes the release of some of the anterior pituitary hormones, as assessed by bio-assay methods. Observations from physiological as well as morphological approach showed that acupuncture has significant influences upon thyroid, adrenal gland and gonads. Preliminary results also indicate that pancreatic islets and parathyroid gland are affected by acupuncture. However, much remains to be investigated concerning the endocrinological basis of acupuncture.

<em>Canis</em> <em>lupaster</em> is a canid that lives in North Africa. In the past, this species was considered a subspecies of golden jackal (<em>Canis aureus</em>), a subspecies of wolf (<em>Canis</em> <em>lupus</em>), or a separated species. Since 2011 genetic data have demonstrated that <em>C. lupaster</em> is not a golden jackal and that it is more closely related to wolf lineage. The recent interest on <em>C.</em> <em>lupaster</em> lead to the publication of some papers on this topic, but the vast majority concerned genetic data. In this paper a morphological approach is presented. Twelve specimens, collected in Libya between 1926 and 1931 and now stored in the Natural History Museum of Genoa, are described here.<em> C. lupaster</em> is compared with the African golden jackal and with the wolf. MANOVA, PCA and discriminant analysis were performed. <em>C. lupaster</em> show many differences and is well separated both from wolf and from African golden jackal. Measures and ratios, that allow to rapidly recognise among these species, were identified. These ratios could be a useful tool for field researchers to quickly identify the correct species.

It is perhaps one of the most important characteristics of the past decade in astronomy that the evolution of some major classes of astronomical objects has become accessible to detailed research. The theory of the evolution of individual stars has developed into a substantial body of quantitative investigations. The evolution of galaxies, particularly of our own, has clearly become a subject for serious research. Even the history of the solar system, this close-by intriguing puzzle, may soon make the transition from being a subject of speculation to being a subject of detailed study in view of the fast flow of new data obtained with new techniques, including space-craft.
