Kelapa Dua Lake is important for the local community as a water catchment and reservoir. At certain times of the year, water hyacinth grown and spread rapidly due to the lake's high nutrient content, including nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. These are indicators of pollution from the surrounding populated areas. Inappropriate and poorly timed countermeasures against this invasive species have had many negative effects. One countermeasure that could work, however, is harvesting the water hyacinth as a raw material for handicrafts. A joint team of lecturers, UPH service learning, students, a team from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Indonesian local government, and local resident carried out a collaborative event to clear one section of Kelapa Lake of both water hyacinth and plastic waste. A numbers of water hyacinth were collected and then processed as a basic material for handicraft products. These handicraft products were then exhibited at an environmental education concert attended by invited guests, including representatives of the Kelapa Dua local government. This event is expected to provide new information about the processing and use of water hyacinth, highlighting its economic value and encouraging more positive activities to decrease water hyacinth and protect the environment.

The article is devoted to the analysis of V.V. Rozanov’s views on the situation in the western borderlands of the empire – Western Russia. Those views were expressed in his publicism on the Polish issue. As sources of information the author uses the articles published in the period of the publicist’s active creative work in 1890s–1914. In his articles Rozanov promptly responded to all current events in the region. His debut in covering that subject matter can be traced to the publication of his reflections regarding the personality of M.N. Muravyev-Vilensky and the latter’s contribution to the «Russian Case» in Western Russia (informational cause was the opening of the monument to him in Vilna). Also he was interested in the following subjects of Western Russia problematic: the problem of introducing local government in Belarusian provinces; the outbreak of religious violence between Catholics and Orthodox Christians in Belarus and Kholmshchina in 1905–1907; the problem of the compliance of the government policy in the Western provinces with the true national goals. In his articles Rozanov repeatedly drew the authorities’ and society’s attention to the danger of Polish nationalism and to the danger of the repeated attempts to assimilate the Russians (Belarusians and Ukrainians) of the Western region. He never stopped worrying about the situation with the Orthodox Christians. The inconsistency of judgments and views inherent to Rozanov was vividly demonstrated in his publications devoted to that subject.

This article is concerned with mass education in late colonial Ghana. The first part examines how people in the Ashanti Region interpreted and responded to a policy that was conceived in the period of power sharing between an African nationalist legislative assembly and a civil service that was still dominated by British expatriates. Literacy campaigns and related community development activities were shaped by the expectations and ideals of the Asantes who participated as learners, tutors, volunteer leaders and salaried employees. Mass education was popular partly because new skills, techniques and materials could be used to pursue older ideals about enlightenment, progress, cleanliness and good character. Government policy indicated that literacy campaigns and community development activities would help to build democracy from the grassroots, yet, in spite of its popularity, mass education remained beyond the control of elected local government. The later part of this article focuses on the small town of Kwaso in order to establish why this was so and what one local resident was able to do about it.
