Kelapa Dua Lake is important for the local community as a water catchment and reservoir. At certain times of the year, water hyacinth grown and spread rapidly due to the lake's high nutrient content, including nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium. These are indicators of pollution from the surrounding populated areas. Inappropriate and poorly timed countermeasures against this invasive species have had many negative effects. One countermeasure that could work, however, is harvesting the water hyacinth as a raw material for handicrafts. A joint team of lecturers, UPH service learning, students, a team from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Indonesian local government, and local resident carried out a collaborative event to clear one section of Kelapa Lake of both water hyacinth and plastic waste. A numbers of water hyacinth were collected and then processed as a basic material for handicraft products. These handicraft products were then exhibited at an environmental education concert attended by invited guests, including representatives of the Kelapa Dua local government. This event is expected to provide new information about the processing and use of water hyacinth, highlighting its economic value and encouraging more positive activities to decrease water hyacinth and protect the environment.

High sedimentation and the entry of organik and inorganik pollutants, especially P and N, have led to the eutrophication of Rawapening Lake waters. These conditions triggered an uncontrolled booming of water hyacinth aquatic weed (Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms). The presence of water hyacinth triggers a significant loss of water compared to local weeds through evapotranspiration. The invasion of water hyacinth causes various problems, including depletion of water oxygen content which has an impact on decreasing fish production, damaging natural beauty, and also affecting public health. Many efforts to control water hyacinth in Rawapening Lake have been carried out both physically and by utilizing biological agents. One of the efforts to control the density of water hyacinth in Rawapening Lake is to use it as compost raw material. Water hyacinth contains various elements that are useful for making quality compost, including calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), potassium (K), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), and others. Water hyacinth root contains sulfates and phosphates, the leaves contain carotin and the flowers contain delphinidin-3-diglucosida. The various nutrients contained in water hyacinth make quality compost capable of meeting the nutritional needs of cultivated plants. This article aims to review the use of water hyacinth as a basic material for making compost which is useful for fertilizing agricultural cultivation activities

The aim of this study was to find a solution on revitalization of the biodiesel plant of 6 tons/day capacity in Serongga, Klumpang Hilir Sub-district, Kotabaru District at Province of South Kalimantan that managed by the Local Government of Kotabaru. Based on the surveys, the biodiesel plant has not worked properly for 3 years since the last commissioning. The reasons for the biodiesel plant not operating were caused by technical, management and economic problems. This paper studied the technical problem, calculation of the estimation cost for repair, replacement and installation of equipments and instruments, analysis of Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Treat (SWOT), and analysis of economic feasibility in the operation of biodiesel plant. Based on the SWOT Analysis, it was found that the operation of biodiesel plant was strongly influenced by the security of supply and price of raw material, local government efforts to penetrate the market, and increased added-value of by-product. To increase the economic value of the plant in the future, a review on the economic and sensitivity analysis of several options was conducted. The available solutions were to revitalize the plant and operate the plant at the existing location (Scenario 0), to integrate biodiesel plant into a nearby palm oil mill (Scenario 1) and to move the plant at the mining site (Scenario 2). Economic calculation analysis results that integrating biodiesel plant with palm oil mill nearby was the best option (Scenario 1). Based on sensitivity analysis of Scenario 1, financial margin was strongly influenced by the CPO, methanol and biodiesel prices

Keywords: Biodiesel Plant, Revitalization, SWOT, Economic Analysis, Integration

The importance of community attitude and participation for the success and sustainability of cultural festivals has been steadily increasing in recent years. The Chuncheon Puppet Festival (CPF) is an international festival that has been held every year since 1989 in Chuncheon, Korea. The festival has several distinctive characteristics as a sustainable event because: (a) it maintains its single genre of puppet performances based on modern cultural art; (b) it is well-established as the festival for the local residents of Chuncheon City and is planned by local community residents and local small companies, not by government agencies or global large entrepreneurs; (c) it helps children to have an interesting cultural experience in the local environment; and (d) it is regularly hosted in August, an off-season for festivals in Korea that was chosen by residents as it is a school holiday season. However, there is still room for improvement to secure its place as a successful sustainable festival. The following might be considered: (i) increased exchange of human resources among the festival executive members, community groups, and the public staff in Chuncheon City; (ii) local residents should maintain full control of the festival; and (iii) a local cultural trust should be established by cultural art professionals, local resident organizations, puppet show professionals, and public agency staff. The CPF is a typical example of a successful sustainable festival with proactive and supportive community participation and a large number of volunteers that help to increase local competitiveness and sustainable local development. This case report delivers insightful lessons and messages to guide what needs to be preconditioned for local cultural festivals to be sustainable and successful for a long time in many destinations, where they can contribute as efficient catalysts for regional tourism development.

This study focused on understanding the cultural immersion experience of students who participated in Study Abroad Programs (SAP) and Global Service Learning Programs (GSL). The study looked at how the immersion experience impacted the participants’ view of self and others upon re-entry into their local community. Specifically, we applied the perspective transformation theoretical framework to analyze the extent to which participation in cultural immersion programs transforms students’ perceptions of self and others. The analysis of the semi-structured interviews suggested that by engaging in intentional immersion and guided reflections, participants became aware of the need to reevaluate their perspectives, expectations, and assumptions about self and others. We also found that there were differences in the way participants experienced the cultural immersion process and the impact it had on cultural awareness and self-identity.

Purpose This paper aims to investigate Thai stakeholders’ perceptions of developing a destination for international retirement migration (IRM). Increasingly, residents of developed nations such as Japan who retire from work are choosing to live in Thailand or other less-developed countries. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative approach was used, and data were collected through focus groups and in-depth interviews in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Content analysis technique was used to analyze data after completing the interviews of 35 industry participants. Findings It was found from the participants that considerable new real estate development and services specifically for these retirees has been created in recent years, but that there is a lack of stakeholder collaboration in catering to this market. Moreover, local resident knowledge of the retirees’ culture and language is lacking, along with a need for policy and planning support from government. Research limitations/implications A limitation of this study is that it explored only the perception of business stakeholders involved with Japanese IRM, a group of importance to the Thai Government due to their increasing numbers. Further study could look at local community attitudes toward IRM and how a community adapts to this new phenomenon. Practical implications This study provides guidelines for stakeholders, government and local communities. Especially, the role of government is to provide support with clear information about the visa process and legal documents. Originality/value This study contributes to the body of knowledge of destination development strategy for a specific international retirement tourist group.
