This article discusses Pope Francis’s teaching on poverty and economic justice with reference to his Evangelii gaudium and Laudato si’. This teaching is developed through three emphases of the pope: (1) a compassionate church, moved by the suffering and injustice in the world; (2) a church whose mission is to accompany humanity with the leaven of the Gospel in order to bring about a radical conversion of hearts and worldly systems and institutions; and (3) a transformative missional praxis that brings about integral salvation through solidarity with the poor and marginalized, and a prophetic commitment to human and cosmic flourishing.

In an age when rhetoric about alleviating conditions of poverty is rightly suspect, this study offers a reassessment of the power of non-modern, christological rhetoric through parallel examples of the preaching of Augustine and Pope Francis. Demonstrating how both practice a version of prosopopeia, this study shows how Augustine’s “exchange” and Francis’s “encounter” function as performative Christologies by which rhetoric is meant to effect reality concerning the poor. The study suggests revision of binary formulations of the relation of rhetoric to reality and proposes a non-binary, incarnational method.

Stresses the importance of wisdom and ecological spirituality, solidarity, option for the poor and subsidiarity in the dialogue between Catholicism and environmentalism. Concludes showing that the personal testimony and adherence to ecological causes that Christian discernment points as fair, as made by Pope Francis, are preconditions for the continuation of this dialogue. However, for it to bear fruitfully, it is necessary that the knowledge of faith becomes knowledge of reality, capable of illuminating the challenges faced by society today. Keywords: Laudato si’. Abstract: The Evangelii Gaudium and the speeches offered during the Papal Apostolic Journeys to Latin America made more clear the theological and pastoral option of Pope Francis, whose axis is around a preferential option for «a poor Church that assumes the poor-people». A Church that recognizes the theological locus of the popular culture, as a socio-analytic mediation to encounter the God of Jesus. To understand this, it is mandatory to examine the social and historical debates occasioned by Latin American Liberation Theology and the way it was received in Argentina through the so called «Theology of the People». It will also be necessary to follow the discussions on the relationship between the proclamation of the Gospel, the life of the Church and the reality of the poor, as they have been stated from Medellin and San Miguel to Aparecida. In this article we will study those key areas and topics in which Pope Francis has developed his theological-pastoral option and its consequences for the credibility of the Christian community in a globalized era.

In response to the phenomenon of globalization, which has resulted in the exclusion of entire peoples and their cultures, Pope Francis has proposed a pastoral geopolitics that is in keeping with the spirit of Vatican II and Latin American theology. Today’s poor are not only the individually poor, but also “poor-peoples” ( pueblos-pobres). Francis’s pastoral geopolitics seeks to identify the new historical processes being formed on the peripheries, such as social movements for democratic and inclusive societies, processes that the Church should encourage by valuing and incarnating itself in poor-peoples’ “cultures.” His structural option for the poor brings together ecclesiology, geopolitics, and evangelization.

The Indian context is one of religious and cultural pluralism and massive poverty. Despite the reverence for the earth ingrained by its major religions, it has suffered enormous ecological devastation. In the encyclical Laudato Si,’ Pope Francis may very well be addressing India directly. In this article the author highlights its relevance and stresses the necessity of entering into dialogue with the major religions and the poor. In this way, in solidarity with all people, we can strive to recover our God-given place as creatures that share a bond of kinship with all created realities, heal the wounds inflicted on creation and render justice to the victims of ecological degradation.
