Verification of Puffin Modelling Using VISSIM

Puffin crossing is the most recent signalised crossings in UK. The operation of Puffin signal control is mainly based on traffic condition hence could impose longer waiting time on pedestrian. Therefore there is a need to review on the operation of the signal control strategy of Puffin crossings to make it more pedestrian responsive without imposing significant delay to other road users. Research to date has shown that VISSIM model is more suitable for the evaluation of signal control improvement.  The latest signal controlled pedestrian crossing facility, the Puffin, has been modelled and tested in VISSIM micro-simulation model. The objective of this study is to verify the Puffin coding using VISSIM microsimulation software. It is to ensure that the Puffin signal control in VISSIM is working as in a real traffic condition. For this purpose a suitable mid-block section was selected at Market Street, United Kingdom. Pedestrians' characteristics, vehicular characteristics, geometric layout of the site were retrieved from video recording. All these characteristics were coded in Puffin model using VISSIM micro-simulation. The results proved that the Puffin model in VISSIM is able to reproduce site representative condition.  The findings in this study are significant in the whole modelling process.

To maximize the bandwidth of green wave of trunk road is a main issue in the research of signal control in urban traffic. However, the traditional analytical algorithmcan not be applied in actual traffic widely. A novel dynamic two-direction green wave coordinate control strategy was proposed to overcome the problem. By combining the genetic BP neural network with the traditional analytical algorithm, the urban traffic of two-direction was controlled coordinately online. Finally, an actual example was presented. It shows that not only the green wave bandwidth, the phase difference of each intersection and the critical cycle of trunk road were optimized according to real-time traffic flow, but also our algorithm can be used in different traffic condition by adjusting the parameters of the model.

In this paper, we evaluate several typical car-following models based on actual measurement data from real traffic condition in Xi’an city by presenting a visual comparison between real and simulated value of the velocity for vehicles. We find that FVDM can depict the real velocity change accurately. Besides, some popular models such as OVM, GFM and OV-DM are not very suitable for real traffic simulation in Xi’an city, although they can represent some traffic phenomena under certain condition.

A new method of traffic control based upon real-time number of the vehicles at the intersection was pulled forward. Serial vehicle detectors were used to detect the number of the vehicle waiting to pass through the intersection. One or more control boxes were used to control the traffic lights according to real traffic condition and transreceived data between itself and the detectors. The information transmission between the detectors and the controllers is based upon 2.4G ISM band. Arithmetic on the system operation, which took the pedestrians and the situation of excessive vehicles into account, is introduced.

The behavior of a driver of any vehicle is important in estimating heterogeneous traffic conditions with no strict lane discipline. In the present study, a micro-simulation model is used to analyze the mixed traffic condition with different drivers’ behavior parameters. The field data collected on traffic flow characteristics of multilane highways are used in the calibration and validation of the simulation model. Out of the ten coefficient of correlation (CC) parameters in the simulation model, five are used in the present study to make a model of simulation for heterogeneous traffic; the other five parameters are not considered for testing their influence on simulated capacity values as they represent very typical behavior of a driver, either in car-following, or in free-flow conditions. Two separate simulation models are made by changing the CC (CC0, CC1, CC2, CC7, and CC8) parameters, each for a four-lane divided and a six-lane divided highway as the geometric conditions of the roads and the traffic flow is different for both the cases. These models are then applied on two other sections of a four-lane divided and a six-lane divided highway to validate the parameters of the model developed earlier for other sections.

Globally, studies have provided significant facts about pedestrian demographic characteristics influencing road crossing behaviour of pedestrians. However, there seems to be an unconcluded argument about the influence of demographic characteristics on road crossing behaviour. This study aimed at examine the gender differences in road crossing behaviour of UCC students on campus. The study was done by mapping out the road conditions of pedestrian crossing sites, identifing the perceived gender prone to indulge in bad road crossing behaviour and examine the gendered perception towards drivers’ attitude on road crossing behaviour on campus. An observation checklist was used to observe the road crossing behaviour of both men and women while one Focused Group Discusions was conducted each for men and women groups on UCC campus. Results indicated that men were more prone to road crossing accidents than women. Further analysis showed differing drivers attitudes towards pedestrians and road crossing behaviours by men and women on campus. It was found that women were relatively treated better than men. It is recommended that all road users must be educated to be sensitive to all road users to reduce gender biass attitude and behaviours while using the road.

Pedestrians are a part of vulnerable road users which safety requires a special attention. Official statistics in Estonia from the last decade returns the following numbers: around 30 % of all road traffic accidents in the country were accidents with pedestrians, 32 % of all traffic fatalities were finished with pedestrian death. Pedestrian crossing has the biggest risk level between all kinds of pedestrian facilities, because it includes a direct conflict point between vehicle and pedestrian traffics. The article presents a method to assess risk of pedestrian crossing users and to determine safety level of this road infrastructure element. This approach is based on observation and collection of infrastructural as well as traffic data, which includes: (1) information about each pedestrian crossing facility, its location and state, (2) data about accidents with pedestrians and their features, (3) data from road traffic measurements. The main advantages of the described method are universality and comprehensiveness. The case study was done in Kristiine district of the city Tallinn, which was chosen as the most typical average district of Estonian capital.
