Abstract In this paper, an ultra-compact implantable antenna for biomedical applications is proposed. The proposed implanted meandered compact patch antenna is implanted inside the body at a depth of 2 mm. The proposed antenna was designed with Roger RO3003 (ɛr = 3) as substrate with an overall size of dimensions 5 × 5 × 0.26 mm3. The radiating element is a square patch antenna with different size rectangular slots and coaxial feeding. The proposed implantable antenna resonates at 2.45 GHz (from 2.26 to 2.72 GHz) frequency with a bandwidth of 460 MHz and a gain of −22.6 dB. The specific absorption rate has been considered for health care considerations, and the result is within the limits of the federal communication commission. The measured and simulated scattering parameters are compared, and good agreements are achieved. The proposed antenna is simulated and investigated for biomedical applications suitability.

The conventional frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar accuracy range detection algorithm is based on the frequency estimation and additional phase evaluation which contains Fourier transform and frequency refining analysis in each chirp, so it has the disadvantages of being computationally expensive, and not being suitable for real-time motion measurement. In addition, if there are other objects near the target, the spectra of the clutter and the target will be adjacent and affect each other, making it more challenging to estimate the frequency of the target. In this paper, the analytical expression of the Fourier transform of the beat signal is presented and it can be seen that spectrum leakage makes the phase of Fourier transform no longer consistent with the real phase of signal. The change regularities of real and imaginary parts of Fourier transform are studied, and the corrected phase of ellipse approximation is given in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. Accurate displacement can be obtained by accurate phase. The algorithm can filter the direct current (DC) offset which is mainly caused by stationary objects. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by a radar system whose center frequency is 24.075 GHz and the bandwidth is 0.15 GHz; the measurement accuracy of displacement is 0.087 mm and the accuracy of distance is 0.043 m.

A double-layer loaded on the octagon microstrip yagi antenna (OMYA) at 5.8 GHz industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) Band is investigated in this paper. The double-layer consist of two double positive (DPS) substrates. The OMYA is overlaid with a double-layer configuration were simulated, fabricated and measured. A good agreement was observed between the computed and measured results of the gain for this antenna. According to comparison results, it shows that 2.5 dB improvement of the OMYA gain can be obtained by applying the double-layer on the top of the OMYA. Meanwhile, the bandwidth of the measured OMYA with the double-layer is 14.6%. It indicates that the double-layer can be used to increase the OMYA performance in term of gain and bandwidth.

The rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT) has led to more and more devices using ISM frequency bands. Because they are not time synchronized, medium access collisions are unavoidable. The probability of such a collision is usually reasonably low; however, it increases with the number of transmitters competing for the same frequency channel. For this reason, ISM bands’ occupancy is regularly monitored by researchers. This paper presents the results of the measurement campaign during which a selected part of the 868 MHz ISM frequency band was monitored for the presence of transmissions in six locations in various residential areas in Warsaw, Poland. For the purpose of the campaign, a dedicated measurement set-up comprising a software-defined radio (SDR) module was assembled. The measurements results showed that the channel occupancy is in most cases lower than 1% with a maximum observed value of 2%. The paper presents selected characteristics of the detected signals. Additionally, distribution over time of the detected signals was used together with the Monte Carlo simulations to analyze how long idle time blocks are available for new transmitters that could be deployed in the band under testing.
