The evaluation of J-integral from experimental data requires the ηpl and γ functions. However, these functions are available for limited geometry in the literature. In this paper, limit-load-based general expressions of ηpl and γ functions have been derived. These general expressions are then utilized to derive the ηpl and γ functions for through-wall circumferentially/axially cracked elbows under in-plane bending moment which are not available in the literature. The functions are then applied to generate J-R curves from fracture experiments of elbows. Finite element analyses of the tested elbows are also described in the paper.

Piping elbows under bending moment are vulnerable to cracking at crown. The structural integrity assessment requires evaluation of J-integral. The J-integral values for elbows with axial part-through internal crack at crown under in-plane bending moment are limited in open literature. This paper presents the J-integral results of a thick and thin, 90-degree, long radius elbow subjected to in-plane opening bending moment based on number of finite element analyses covering different crack configurations. The non-linear elastic-plastic finite element analyses were performed using WARP3D software. Both geometrical and material nonlinearity were considered in the study. The geometry considered were for Rm/t = 5, and 12 with ratio of crack depth to wall thickness, a/t = 0.15, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 and ratio of crack length to crack depth, 2c/a = 6, 8, 10 and 12.

Abstract Fully plastic failure stresses for circumferentially surface cracked pipes subjected to tensile loading can be estimated by means of limit load criteria based on the net-section stress approach. Limit load criteria of the first type (labelled LLC-1) were derived from the balance of uniaxial forces. Limit load criteria of the second type are given in Section XI of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineering) Code, and were derived from the balance of bending moment and axial force. These are labelled LLC-2. Fully plastic failure stresses estimated by using LLC-1 and LLC-2 were compared. The stresses estimated by LLC-1 are always larger than those estimated by LLC-2. From the literature survey of experimental data, failure stresses obtained by both types of LLC were compared with the experimental data. It can be stated that failure stresses calculated by LLC-1 are better than those calculated by LLC-2 for shallow cracks. On the contrary, for deep cracks, LLC-2 predictions of failure stresses are fairly close to the experimental data. Furthermore, allowable circumferential crack sizes obtained by LLC-1 were compared with the sizes given in Section XI of the ASME Code. The allowable crack sizes obtained by LLC-1 are larger than those obtained by LLC-2. It can be stated that the allowable crack size for tensile stress depends on the condition of constraint of the pipe, and the allowable cracks given in Section XI of the ASME Code are conservative.

Abstract The present paper makes an attempt to depict the effect of ovality in the inlet pigtail pipe bend of a reformer under combined internal pressure and in-plane bending. Finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments have been used. An incoloy Ni-Fe-Cr B407 alloy material was considered for study and assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic in behavior. The design of pipe bend is based on ASME B31.3 standard and during manufacturing process, it is challenging to avoid thickening on the inner radius and thinning on the outer radius of pipe bend. This geometrical shape imperfection is known as ovality and its effect needs investigation which is considered for the study. The finite element analysis (ANSYS-workbench) results showed that ovality affects the load carrying capacity of the pipe bend and it was varying with bend factor (h). By data fitting of finite element results, an empirical formula for the limit load of inlet pigtail pipe bend with ovality has been proposed, which is validated by experiments.

This paper presents a non-linear numerical investigation of surface cracks in round bars under bending moment by using ANSYS finite element analysis (FEA). Due to the symmetrical analysis, only quarter finite element (FE) model was constructed and special attention was given at the crack tip of the cracks. The surface cracks were characterized by the dimensionless crack aspect ratio, a/b = 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2, while the dimensionless relative crack depth, a/D = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. The square-root singularity of stresses and strains was modeled by shifting the mid-point nodes to the quarter-point locations close to the crack tip. The proposed model was validated with the existing model before any further analysis. The elastic-plastic analysis under remotely applied bending moment was assumed to follow the Ramberg-Osgood relation with n = 5 and 10. J values were determined for all positions along the crack front and then, the limit load was predicted using the J values obtained from FEA through the reference stress method.

A marginal field defines as an oil and/or gas field that has a short production period, low proven reservoir, and could not be exploited using existing technology. As the demand for oil and gas keeps increasing, one of the solutions to tackle the issues is to build the modified platform which came to be more minimalist to conduct the oil and gas production in the marginal field. Naturally, the minimum offshore structures are cost less but low in redundancy, therefore, pose more risks. Although the study on the minimum structures is still uncommon, there are opportunities to find innovative systems that need to have a further analysis toward such invention. Therefore, this study took the modified jacket platform as a minimum structure, and local stresses analysis by using finite element method is applied for the most critical tubular joint with multiplanarity of the joint is taking into account. The analysis was carried out using the finite element program of Salome Meca with three-dimensional solid elements are used to model the multiplanar joint. Various loading types of axial force, in-plane bending moment, and out-of-plane bending moment are applied respectively to investigate the stress distribution along the brace-chord intersection line of the tubular joint. The results show that the hotspot stress occurred at a different point along each brace-chord intersection line for each loading type. Finally, as compared to the in-plane bending moment or out-of-plane bending moment loading types, the axial force loading state is thought to generate greater hotspot stress.

This paper demonstrates the limitations of repeated elastic finite element analyses (REFEA) based limit load determination that uses the classical lower bound theorem. The r-node method is prescribed as an alternative for obtaining better limit load estimates. Lower bound aspects pertaining to r-nodes are also discussed.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect crack depth a/W = 0 to 0.4 and load angle (30°,45°,and 60°) on the limit load of miter pipe bends (MPB) under out-of-plane bending moment with a crosshead speed 500 mm/min. The geometry of cracked and uncracked multi miter pipe bends are: bend angle, α = 90°, pipe bend factor, h = 0.844, standard dimension ratio, SDR = 11, and three junctions, m = 3. The material of the investigated pipe is a high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is applied in natural gas piping systems. Butt-fusion welding is used to produce the welds in the miter pipe bends. An artificial crack is produced by a special cracking device. The crack is located at the crown side of the miter pipe bend, such that the crack is collinear with the direction of the applied load. The crack depth ratio, a/W = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 for out-of-plane bending moment “i.e. loading angle φ = 0°”. For each out-of-plane bending moment and all closing and opening load angles the limit load is obtained by the tangent intersection method (TI) from the load deflection curves produced by the specially designed and constructed testing machine at the laboratory. For each out-of-plane bending moment case, the experimental results reveals that increasing crack depth leads to a decrease in the stiffness and limit load of MPB. In case of combined load (out-of-plane and in-plane opening; mode) higher load angles lead to an increase in the limit load. The highest limit load value appears at a loading angle equal, φ = 60°. In case of combined load (out-of-plane and in-plane closing; mode) the limit load decreases upon increasing the load angle. On the other hand, higher limit load values take place at a specific loading angle equal φ = 30°. For combined load opening case; higher values of limit load are obtained. Contrarily, lower values are obtained in the closing case.

A tensile test of buried PE pipe is designed to test the mechanical performance. Then the constitutive model for the PE pipe can be established. The limit load of the PE pipe with local thinning defect can be studied with the method of combining the orthogonal design of experiment and finite element analysis. Then the factors of local thinning defect pipe limit load factors can be analyzed. The results show that the depth of the defect has a great effect on the limit load (internal pressure and bending moment) of PE pipe. The effects that the axial length of the defect and the circumferential length of the defect have on the limit load are not significant.

The circumferential flaw evaluation procedures in ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section XI nonmandatory Appendix C are currently limited to straight pipes under pressure and bending loads without consideration of torsion loading. The Working Group on Pipe Flaw Evaluation of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is developing guidance for considering the effects of torsion by a mean of an equivalent bending moment, which is a square root of sum square combination of bending moment and torsion load with a weighted factor for torsion moment. A torsion weighted factor, Ce, is established in this paper using large strain finite element limit load analysis with elastic perfectly plastic materials. Planar flaws and nonplanar flaws in a 10.75 in. (273 mm) OD pipe are investigated. Additionally, a finite element J-integral calculation is performed for a planar through wall circumferential flaw with elastic plastic materials subjected to bending and torsion load combinations. The proposed Ce factor for planar flaws is intended for use with the ASME B&PV Code Section XI, Appendix C for limit load and Elastic Plastic Fracture Mechanics (EPFM) circumferential planar flaw evaluations.

Finite element analyses (FEA) have been used to study the effects of multi-axial loadings on bending limit load of local wall thinned pipes. It has been shown by investigators that torsion can be combined with bending moments using SRSS (Square Root of the Sum of the Squares) method for planar flaws with a limited axial extent. The treatment of torsion for non-planar flaws, which exceed the axial extent limit, will be a subject for future investigations. Since the reported FEA results are for various pipe sizes, flaw shapes with different mesh sizes, element types and computer codes, a set of benchmark problems was proposed and analyzed by participating investigators. The benchmark analysis results are presented in this paper.
