Abstract This article presents simulation data and measurements of a novel valve concept that features a soft landing concept. The purpose is to validate the design framework that has been applied to design the valve. The experimental results are obtained with a test rig manufactured specifically for this type of valve design. The validation includes studying the valves switching dynamics, cushion pressure dynamics, and movement-induced flow (MIF). The tests show that the tendencies are captured accurately although the exact magnitudes of forces do not match fully and a noticeable difference between simulated and measured plunger position is revealed. This amounts in a significant difference in the cushion pressure. Therefore, the pressure model is validated by using the measured lift and velocity derived hereof and this shows sufficient correspondence between the two pressures.

AbstractDuring the cold season, the cold protective products are often short during evacuation life after a natural disaster. If evacuees can make and wear simple cold protective gears by using materials obtainable on site, it will reduce the burden on the evacuees in emergent situation. Therefore, we investigated the structure constructed by folding newsprint paper, which can improve the heat retention effect and be applied to various body shapes. Focusing on the glide reflection structure repeating a smaller chamber, the basic size was determined by experiments with reference to the accordion shape, and the experimental results indicated that the heat retention effect was significantly greater than that of a mere air layer and those of ordinary fabrics. Next, it was found that the apex angle of structure had no significant difference in the heat retention effect. Then, the dimensions of the structure were determined to maintain the air layer under the pressure of the clothes by simulation of structural analyses. Finally, we made a temporary cold protective gear that can practically cover the trunk of the body and found that the heat retention effect was significantly higher than that of unprocessed newsprint and that of accordion shape.

Many important industrial problems in the control of rotating machinery with active magnetic bearings concern the minimization of the rotor vibration response to poorly characterized disturbances at a single or several shaft locations, these typically not corresponding to those of a sensor or actuator. Herein, we examine experimental results of a multivariable controller obtained via μ synthesis with a laboratory test rig. These indicate that a significant improvement in performance can be obtained with a multivariable μ controller over that achieved with an optimal decentralized PD controller.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the direct evaporate cooler in hot and humid regions with two different types of agro-based materials. In our experimental study, the locally available agro materials luffa (Sponge Gourd), zizanioides (Vetiver) were used with various thickness and the experimental results were compared with mathematical values. The operating parameters of pad thickness, air velocity, were changed and the performance of the cooler was analyzed. A test rig was designed and fabricated to collect experimental data. The performance of the evaporative cooler was evaluated based on the ambient condition. The analysis of the data indicated that cooling saturation efficiency improve with decrease of air velocity and higher pad thickness. It was shown that zizanioides-based pad with 160[Formula: see text]mm thickness has the higher performance (88%) at 4.5[Formula: see text]m/s air velocity in comparison with luffa pad materials. The experimental results of outlet air temperature and number of transfer units (NTU) were compared with mathematical model. The test results were within the limit of 15% and 10% to mathematical values.

This study investigated the necessity of automated vehicle control customization for individual drivers via a lane-changing experiment involving 35 subjects and an automated minivan. The experiment consisted of two automated driving conditions: one in which the subject was unable to override vehicle controls, the other with the option to override when the subject felt it was necessary. The automated vehicle drove at a speed of 40 km/h along three kinds of planned paths for lane changing, generated by Bezier curves; the distance required for lane changing was varied to obtain the preferred path of each subject. Various data obtained during driving, including vehicle trajectories and steering angles produced by subjects were logged. After automated driving, a questionnaire was administered to each subject. The experimental data showed that there was a statistically significant difference between comfort when the vehicle drove along the subject’s preferred path, and when it drove along other paths. The results of the questionnaire indicated that 46% of the subjects preferred the planned path that most closely resembled their own. In addition, quantitative analysis of driving data found that approximately 69% of the subjects preferred an automated driving control that resembled their own. However, it was also observed that certain subjects were open to multiple types of automated vehicle control. The experimental results indicate that drivers will not necessarily accept a single type of automated vehicle control, therefore customization will be necessary to improve acceptance of automated driving.

This paper shows experimental results obtained from a T100 microturbine connected with different volume sizes. The activity was carried out with the test rig developed at the University of Genoa for hybrid system emulation. However, these results apply to all the advanced cycles where a microturbine is connected with an additional external component responsible for volume size increase. Even if the tests were performed with a microturbine, similar analyses can be extended to large size turbines. A modular vessel was used to perform and to compare the tests with different volume sizes. To highlight the volume size effect, preliminary experimental results were carried out considering the transient response due to an on/off bleed valve operation. So, the main differences between system parameters obtained for a bleed line closing operation are compared considering three different volume sizes. The main results reported in this paper are related to surge operations. To produce surge conditions in this test rig, a valve operating in the main air path was closed to generate unstable behavior for the three different volume sizes. Particular focus was devoted to the operational curve plotted on the compressor map. The vibration frequency analysis showed significant amplitude increase not only during surge events but also close to the unstable condition. In details, possible surge precursor indicators were obtained to be used for the detection of risky machine operations. The experimental data collected during these tests are analyzed with the objective of designing control systems to prevent surge conditions.

Gauze is an excellent material for infant apparel which can made in various forms and by a variety of methods, and thus have attracted great attention in baby care market. This study aims to identify the wicking property of the gauze fabric in baby care products, and to analyse the relationships between the wicking ability and fabric structure of baby soft gauze products. The experimental results revealed that a significant difference occurred for the gauze in the wicking ability. The cotton gauzes were found to show higher wicking rate than bamboo counterparts because of the higher hydrophilic property of cotton material. The fiber content and structure of fabric were the major parameters that affects the wicking ability.

This paper presents an analysis of the failure modes during power transmission of a new type of one-way clutch called an expansible-band clutch. The new clutch is made from thermoplastic materials and an experimental test rig has been used to test two material combinations to failure. The experimental results are compared with predictions obtained from empirical formulae. The differences in the two sets of results are used to make conclusions about the failure processes.

In this study, the MRE was manufactured, and the sandwich beam was also fabricated by treating with MRE between two thin aluminum layers. The experiment test rig was set up to investigate the vibration response of the MRE sandwich beam under non-homogeneous magnetic field. The experimental results show that the MRE sandwich beam had the capabilities of left shifting first natural frequency when the magnetic field was increased in the activated regions. It is also obvious that the first natural frequency of the MRE sandwich beam decreased as the magnetic field that applied on the beam was moved from the clamped end of the beam to the free end of the beam.
