Several successful methods for balancing flexible rotating shells have been developed in recent years. The methods can apparently be subdivided into a group which is based on modal characteristics and another set which employs influence coefficients. The relative merits of these two approaches have been the subject of much discussion and argument — most of it inconclusive and rather fruitless. The authors consider that in practice many of the differences are more apparent than real and that they seem to occur because the various techniques are normally presented in relatively simple and ideal, theoretical terms. This paper represents the start of a joint project which hopes to resolve the apparent differences and, eventually, develop a unified approach to such balancing. A discussion of the theoretical basis for this unified approach is presented along with a description of a test program conducted to explore the possibilities of such an approach.

A flexible rotor balancing procedure, which incorporates the advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of the modal and influence coefficient procedures, has been developed and implemented. This new procedure, referred to as the Unified Balancing Approach, has been demonstrated on a supercritical power transmission shaft test rig. The test rig was successfully balanced through four flexural critical speeds with a substantial reduction in effort as compared with the effort required in modal and influence coefficient balancing procedures. A brief discussion of the Unified Balancing Approach and its relationship to the modal and influence coefficient methods is presented. A series of tests which were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of various balancing techniques are described. The results of the Unified Balancing Approach tests are presented and discussed. These results confirm the superiority of this balancing procedure for the supercritical shaft test rig in particular and for multiple-mode balancing in general.

The need to devise a low-speed balancing method for balancing high-speed rotors was recognized and addressed. In this paper, a scheme that combines both the influence coefficients and modal balancing techniques is presented. The scheme is developed for low-speed balancing of high-speed rotors, and relies on knowledge of the modal characteristics of the rotor. The conditions for applicability of the method were stated in the light of the experientially estimated rotor deflection mode shapes. An experimental test rig of a flexible rotor was constructed to verify the applicability and reliability of the low-speed balancing scheme.

The contribution of the late Professor Jørgen W. Lund in the field of rotor dynamics and fluid film bearings is presented in a condensed form with the emphasis on the experimental work and results that confirm and support many of Dr. Lund’s theories and analyses. Part 1(A) covers the subject of rotor balancing by the influence method and Part 1(B) the unbalance response of a flexible rotor. In Part 2(A), experiments on instability and the influence of unbalance on whirl frequency are discussed for two rotors supported in cylindrical bearings. In Part 2(B), experiments using a cylindrical, two-axial groove journal bearing over a range of loads and speeds are reviewed.

The subject of this research is the concept of reduction in logics and methodology of science. On the one hand, reduction is understood as a relation between the term and its defining expression within the scientific theory; while on the other – it represents the relation between two theories. Since the extension of theory is possible through introduction to its vocabulary of new terms by means of nominal definitions, the reduction represents an inverse operation – removing the terms from the vocabulary of the theory. At the same time, the theory itself is defined in accordance with the theoretical-multiple approach as a class of sentences closed in relation to derivability. The scientific novelty consists in examination of semantic and epistemological aspects of the formal definition of reduction. Particularly, the explication of reduction relation between two theories leans in the concept of functional equivalence of the theories. It is established that the list of basic terms of the theory can be set only conventionally. All terms introduces by the means of nominal definitions turn out to be reducible. Therefore, a distinctive feature of theoretical terms is the possibility of its reduction.

The article considers and analyzes various opinions on the category "forensic study of personality". From the point of view of the Russian language, the various meanings of the term "study" fully and in a multifaceted way reflect the activities of the investigator in the study of the person in the course of sufficient disclosure and investigation of crimes. It is concluded that forensic study of personality can be considered as a process, theory (doctrine) and part of criminalistics (educational discipline, special course). In this connection, the definition of the term "forensic study of personality" depends on understanding of its essence. Forensic study of personality as a process for the study of personality is associated with activity. Forensic study of the personality as a theory (doctrine) is associated with the objective laws that constitute the subject of criminalistics. Forensic study of the personality as a section of criminalistics (academic discipline, special course) is based on a theoretical basis, on the basis of which methods, approaches to studying personality are considered. The ultimate goal of forensic study of personality is solving the problems of disclosure and investigation of crimes. Author's definitions of the term "forensic study of personality" are proposed.

The development of computer graphics programs (CGP) and their widespread introduction into the practice of designing indoor and outdoor lighting with the ability to visualize the projected object has led to the fact that the design engineer simultaneously performs the functions of a designer. Similarly, designers creating artistic light images that previously assumed the selection and adjustment of light on the spot are now forced to select real lighting devices using PKG, which requires professional engineering knowledge. It determines the objective basis for creating a new specialty – light designer. However, the systems of engineering and art education have almost no common methodological foundations. We propose a method of teaching based on the use of PCG in the educational process, which will be able to combine both educational systems into a single specialty. The methodology is based on the joint project created with the teacher in CGP, collective discussion, and defense of the developed projects. It allows engineers to explain the created artistic images, and designers to explain the influence of the characteristics of light fields and parameters of lighting devices on the image. The results of test sessions among students in both areas of study are discussed. The thinking features of each student group and the possibility of developing a unified approach to design are analyzed.

Abstract Flexible rotor assemblies often consist of two or more rotor modules which are index-balanced against each other with the purpose of eliminating the need for re-balancing if a module should have to be exchanged. However, the index procedure may cause vibration problems because it ignores certain flexible rotor balancing requirements. This paper describes a modal balancing approach based on jet engine rotors which are typically balanced as ISO Class 2 (quasi-rigid) rotors. Appreciation is expressed to Prof. R. The purpose of the article. Theoretical analysis of personal mediation of manipuiative tendencies. Methodology. The basis of this study is a theoretical analysis, synthesis, generalization, systematization of available scientific literature on the subject. Results. Manipulation of consciousness is one of the ways to dominate and suppress the will of people by acting on them through the programming of their behavior. This action is aimed at the mental structures of man, which is carried out secretly and aims to change the thoughts, motivations and goals of people in the right direction for a certain group of people. In this case, the purpose of manipulation – hiding their true intentions, to encourage another person to take certain actions, change values, ideas and opinions, etc., while maintaining the illusion of independence in general and independence of decisions or actions. In other words, to motivate a person to what he does not want to do, to distract from what he aspires to, but at the same time to create in him the confidence that he is acting of his own free will. Practical implications. The need to study manipulative tendencies is to determine the main ways and methods of manipulation and ways to protect against manipulative action. To reveal the main features of the manipulator’s personality and the category of people who are most prone to manipulative action. Theoretical materials can be used in the training process of the courses “Psychology of personality”, “Age Psychology”, “Differential Psychology”, “Fundamentals psychological correction”. Originality/value. It was found that the criteria for manipulation are: the attitude of the manipulator to the objects of manipulation as a means to achieve their own goal, the desire to gain unilateral advantage, the hidden nature of influence, use of force, motivation, motivation and skill in the process of manipulative influence.
