Abstract This paper presents finite element analysis (FEA) of simplified automotive structures using beam-like elements. The concept is to perform FEA quickly or at early product development stage in order to guide the design process. Two types of finite element models are studied: 1) simplified models which use beam elements to model beam-like components and use other elements for the rest of the vehicle parts such as joints, engines and roofs; 2) thin-walled beam models which purely use thin-walled beam elements. The static stiffness, modal and crash analyses are conducted and the correlation of the results with those from conventional methods are provided.

The surround and the spider of the loudspeaker suspension are modelled in ANSYS to carry out finite element analysis. The displacement dependent nonlinearities arising from the suspension are studied and the material and geometric effects leading to the nonlinearities are parameterised. The ANSYS models are simulated to be excited by a sinusoidal load and the results are evaluated by comparison with the results obtained by a physical model. The paper illustrates how practical models can be analysed using cost effective finite element models and also the extension of the models to experiment on various parameters, like changing the geometry for optimisation, by computer simulation.

A typical ground imitating tank is analyzed regarding it as the thin-walled structure composed of plates (skins) and beams (reinforcement) using finite element method (FEM). Through moving the location of reinforcements, make the skins close with the flanges of the reinforcements in order to imitate actually the connection of the skins and the reinforcements. The thickness of plates, the size and the geometry shape and the location of reinforcements are taken as parameters to be optimized. In calculation, not only consider effects of the oil-weight, the extra-pressure in tank and the dead weight of the tank on the stresses and displacements of the tank, but also analyze the effects of the inertia forces produced due to the rotation of the tank on the stresses and displacements. Displacement, stress and deformation distributions of the ground imitating tank under the three typical flying postures imitated are given.

Finite element analysis has been performed to study vibrational characteristics of cantilever single walled carbon nanotubes. Finite element models are generated by specifying the C-C bond rigidities, which are estimated by equating energies from molecular mechanics and continuum mechanics. Bending, torsion, and axial modes are identified based on effective mass for armchair, zigzag and chiral cantilever single walled carbon nanotubes, whose Young's modulus is evaluated from the bending frequency. Empirical relations are provided for frequencies of bending, torsion, and axial modes.
