Abstract Three-dimensional basic solids generated by linear sweeping of primitives are presented to demonstrate that when stored as a script file, every detail involved in the linear sweep can then be listed. A linearly tapered fillet serves as an example to depict the boolean operations. For better visibility of a solid, splitting the display screen into multiple windows for showing various projects of the solid when viewed from different angles, the hidden-line technique, and changing the location of light source(s) in addition to an ambient light are also described.

The cathodic reduction of the lead monoxide layer formed on lead in 30% aqueous H2SO4 under anodic oxidation at 0.6 V (vs. Hg/HgSO4 reference electrode) was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry, potential step and admittance measurements. The experimental data were analyzed respectively in terms of thin-layer electrochemistry, electrocrystallisation, and changes of resistance of the PbO layer under reduction. The results seem to be best interpreted from the theory of three-dimensional electrocrystallisation as PbO is reduced to Pb. At sub-zero temperatures the PbO peak observed on our voltammograms and potentiostatic current time transients reveals the splitting of the curves into two peaks, which may be a result of reduction of the same material but of different phases, namely, orthorhombic and tetragonal PbO.

This paper presents variations in mesopic adaptation luminance in the presence of ambient light sources along with main light source for outdoor lighting applications. Mesopic photometry system is based on peripheral task, and adaptation luminance is required to compute the effective mesopic radiance for the measured area. Different lighting conditions were considered to determine the effect of chromaticity of bright surrounding sources other than the main light sources to the state of observer adaptation. The veiling luminance caused by the surrounding sources increases the state of observer adaptation, but not the luminance within the measurement field. It has also been observed that in case of cool white surrounding sources, adaptation luminance increases significantly than that of warm white sources.

The characteristics of oval gear is analyzed. The parameters of oval gear are chosen and calculated. The three-dimensional solid modeling of oval gear is achieved. The dynamic model of oval gear is established by FEM and modal analysis of oval gear is investigated. The natural frequency and major modes of the first six orders are clarified. The method and the result facilitate the dynamic design and dynamic response analysis of oval gear.

This article focuses on carryover at a paper mill that had been solved using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to visualize flow within the boiler. Technicians had tried adjusting airflow and firing arrangements without success. They turned the problem over to analysts who simulated the airflow within the boiler using CFD. An animated sequence of streamlines showing airflow provided engineers with a clear understanding of exactly what was happening inside the boiler, making it relatively easy to adjust operating conditions and solve the problem. McDermott analysts use FIELDVIEW, a commercial post-processing program from Intelligent Light in Lyndhurst, NJ. With the software, the analyst can create three-dimensional perspective views with hidden-line removal and light shading. She or He can trace the path of a marker traveling along with the fluid through a series of animated views. The analysts made a second FIELDVIEW movie of the airflow conditions with the new arrangement, showing the elimination of the center core. They played the two movies simultaneously on two monitors set side-by-side to demonstrate for the customer’s engineers how the recommended changes would solve the problem.
