A graphene oxide (GO)-based cortisol biosensor was developed to accurately detect cortisol concentrations from sweat samples at point-of-care (POC) sites. A reference electrode, counter electrode, and working electrode make up the biosensor, and the working electrode was functionalized using multiple layers consisting of GO and antibodies, including Protein A, IgG, and anti-Cab. Sweat samples contact the anti-Cab antibodies to transport electrons to the electrode, resulting in an electrochemical current response. The sensor was tested at each additional functionalization layer and at cortisol concentrations between 0.1 and 150 ng/mL to determine how the current response differed. A potentiostat galvanostat device was used to measure and quantify the electrochemical response in the GO-based biosensor. In both tests, the electrochemical responses were reduced in magnitude with the addition of antibody layers and with increased cortisol concentrations. The proposed cortisol biosensor has increased accuracy with each additional functionalization layer, and the proposed device has the capability to accurately measure cortisol concentrations for diagnostic purposes.

Estimating the accurate State of Charge (SOC) of a battery is important to avoid the over/undercharging and protect the battery pack from low cycle life. Current methods of SOC estimation use complex equations in the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the equivalent circuit model. In this paper, we used a Feed Forward Neural Network (FNN) to estimate the SOC value accurately where battery parameters such as current, voltage, and charge are mapped directly to the SOC value at the output. A FNN could self-learn the weights with each training data point and update the model parameters such as weights and bias using a combination of two gradient descents (Adam). This model comprises the Dropout technique, which can have many neural network architectures by dropping the neuron/mode at each epoch/training cycle using the same weights and biases. Our FNN model was trained with data comprising different current rates and tested for different cycling data, for example, 5th, 10th, 20th, and 50th cycles and at a different cutoff voltage (4.5 V). The battery used for estimating the SOC value was a Na-ion based battery, which is highly non-linear, and it was fabricated in a house using Na0.67Fe0.5Mn0.5O2 (NFM) as a cathode and Na metal as a reference electrode. The FNN successfully estimated the SOC value for the highly non-linear nature of the Na-ion battery at different current rates (0.05 C, 0.1 C, 0.5 C, 1 C, 2 C), for different cycling data, and at higher cut-off voltage of –4.5 V Na+, reaching the R2 value of ~0.97–~0.99, ~0.99, and ~0.98, respectively.

Background: The bacterial derived flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FADGDH) is the most promising enzyme for the third-generation principle-based enzyme sensor for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). Due to the ability of the enzyme to transfer electrons directly to the electrode, recognized as direct electron transfer (DET)-type FADGDH, although no investigation has been reported about DET-type FADGDH employed on a miniaturized integrated electrode. Methods: The miniaturized integrated electrode was formed by sputtering gold (Au) onto a flexible film with 0.1 mm in thickness and divided into 3 parts. After an insulation layer was laminated, 3 openings for a working electrode, a counter electrode and a reference electrode were formed by dry etching. A reagent mix containing 1.2 × 10−4 Unit of DET-type FADGDH and carbon particles was deposited. The long-term stability of sensor was evaluated by continuous operation, and its performance was also evaluated in the presence of acetaminophen and the change in oxygen partial pressure (pO2) level. Results: The amperometric response of the sensor showed a linear response to glucose concentration up to 500 mg/dL without significant change of the response over an 11-day continuous measurement. Moreover, the effect of acetaminophen and pO2 on the response were negligible. Conclusions: These results indicate the superb potential of the DET-type FADGDH-based sensor with the combination of a miniaturized integrated electrode. Thus, the described miniaturized DET-type glucose sensor for CGM will be a promising tool for effective glycemic control. This will be further investigated using an in vivo study.

The kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction in proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) leads to high potentials of >1.5 V vs RHE at the anode electrode during operation. In contrast, an investigation with an in situ reference electrode indicates a much lower potential at the anode side of the bipolar plate which would allow the use of stainless steel and carbon as the bipolar plate materials. This decoupling is induced by the low conductivity of the circulating deionized water. In single cell electrolyzer tests, we show that carbon-coated 316L (C-316L) stainless steel is suitable as a bipolar plate material in contact with the anode and cathode sides of the PEMWE. The coating remains stable throughout the experiments, i.e., 720 h at the anode and 1000 h at the cathode side. Based on these results we regard carbon-coated stainless steel as a sustainable solution for the large-scale application of PEM water electrolysis since it might replace (Pt-coated) titanium in the bipolar plate.

A square wave voltammetric technique coupled with three electrode detection system consist of hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) as working electrode, 1mm platinum wire as an auxiliary electrode (Pt-wire) and silver/silver chloride saturated potassium chloride (Ag/AgCl.sat.KCl) as reference electrode was used to determine the chlorpropamide indirectly through its interaction with valsartan, chlorpropamide gives no reduction peaks in the studied range. The effect of pH and the stability of the measurement were examined calibrations curve of chlorpropamide was constructed and the relation between current and concentration of chlorpropamide was linear with R2 value = 0.9944. The limit of detection for chlorpropamide was 4.89 x 10-9 M through its interaction with valsartan.
