The growth of computer science and technology has brought new opportunities for multidisciplinary designers and engineers to collaborate with each other in a concurrent and coordinated manner. The development of computational agents with unified data structures and software protocols can contribute to the establishment of a new way of working in collaborative design, which is increasingly becoming an international practice. In this paper, we first propose a computational model of collaborative product design management aiming to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the cooperation and coordination among participating disciplines. Then, we present a new framework of collaborative design which adopts an agent-based approach and relocates designers, managers, systems, and supporting agents in a unified knowledge representation scheme for product design. An agent-based system is now being implemented and the design of a set of dinning table and chairs is chosen to demonstrate how the system can help designers in the management and coordination of the collaborative product design process.

The keen competitive market is forcing companies to adopt various advanced technologies, such as collaborative design, to short the product development time-to-market. In this paper, the theory model of the component agent based on finite state machine is proposed first. Secondly, a product component agent frame is proposed by combining the proposed agent model with collaborative design-oriented product data model. Finally, an application is given which shows that the proposed model can enhance the ability of the collaborative product design.

The “people’s innovation” can promote development in enterprises in urgent need of innovative product design. Collaborative product design can be a powerful tool for enterprises wishing to improve their market competitiveness and customer satisfaction. To reduce decision costs, improve efficiency, and solve other issues, promoting “people’s innovation” can play a vital role. With this focus, this paper examines products produced through “people’s innovation.” A collaborative design task scheduling problem is presented. The design tasks are sorted based on a minimum delivery cost principle, which is determined using weighted shortest processing time (WSPT) rules and the shortest delivery time. The results show that distributed collaborative innovation can result in a reasonable arrangement for collaborative design tasks.

. Successful collaborative product development depends on the ability to effectively manage and share engineering knowledge and experience throughout the entire development process. This paper presents a distributed heterogeneous engineering knowledge management approach for the practice of collaborative product design. Firstly, a XTM based heterogeneous knowledge integration model in collaborative product design is proposed; Then, a knowledge management framework in collaborative design process is developed; Finally, a knowledge management system in collaborative design is constructed.

Collaborative product design is a multiple criteria group decision making process bringing different and often controversial points of view together to create a solution among stakeholders. Collaborative design possesses more perspectives than any single person possesses because stakeholders have different perspectives. This work is based on new decision approach that includes creating shared understanding among various stakeholders, contextualizing design criteria and perspectives, and creating a multiple perspective and multiple criteria decision approach, our initial effort has focused on incorporating perspectives into design process. We then provide the approach to find the optimal design decisions for consideration of stakeholders’ perspectives. By analyzing the relationships between stakeholders’ perspectives and preferences of design criteria, multi-criteria decision making approach considering the stakeholders’ perspectives can be used to monitor and control the collaborative design process.
