On Measures of Coupling Between the Artifact and Controller Optimal Design Problems

Optimization of smart products requires optimizing both the artifact design and its controller. The presence of coupling between the design and control problems is an important consideration in choosing the system optimization method. Several measures of coupling have been proposed based on different viewpoints of the system. In this paper, two measures of coupling, a vector based on optimality conditions and a matrix derived from an extension of the global sensitivity equations, are shown to be related under certain conditions and to be consistent in their coupling determination. The measures’ physical interpretation and relative ease of use are discussed using the example of a positioning gantry. A further relation is derived between one measure and a modified sequential formulation that would give results sufficiently close to the true solutions.

Abstract This paper describes a system for parametric design and optimization of complex products. In the system, the use of knowledge-based and mathematical programming methods is combined. The motivation is that while knowledge-based methods are well suited for modeling products, they are insufficient when dealing with design problems that can be given an optimization formulation. This weakness was approached by including the information necessary for stating an optimization problem in the product models. A system optimization method can then be applied. The system also performs sensitivity analysis and has an interactive optimization module. The use of the system is illustrated by an example; the design and optimization of a two-speed gearbox.

Many design problems related to buildings involve minimizing capital and operating costs while providing acceptable service. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are an optimization method that has been applied to these problems. GAs are easily configured, an advantage that often compensates for a sacrifice in performance relative to optimization methods selected specifically for a given problem, and have been shown to give solutions where other methods cannot. This paper reviews the basics of GAs, emphasizing multi-objective optimization problems. It then presents several applications, including determining the size and placement of windows and the composition of building walls, the generation of building form, and the design and operation of HVAC systems. Future work is identified, notably interfaces between a GA and both simulation and CAD programs.

Abstract Inverse problems associated with designing cylindrical DC electrical cloaking shells are studied. Using the optimization method, these inverse problems are reduced to corresponding control problems in which electrical conductivities play the role of passive controls. Admissibility of the optimization method for solving inverse design problems is justified. A numerical algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization is proposed, and the results of numerical experiments are discussed. Optimization analysis shows that high cloaking efficiency of the shell can be achieved either using a highly anisotropic single-layer shell or using a multilayer shell with isotropic layers. In the latter case, the resulting cloaking shell admits simple technological realization using natural materials.

In this paper, we introduce a novel concept for parametric studies in multibody dynamics. This is based on a technique that makes it possible to perform a natural normalization of the dynamics in terms of inertial parameters. This normalization technique rises out from the underlying physical structure of the system, which is mathematically expressed in the form of eigenvalue problems. It leads to the introduction of the concept of dimensionless inertial parameters. This, in turn, makes the decomposition of the array of parameters possible for studying design and control problems where parameter estimation and sensitivity is of importance.

The Taguchi robust design concept is combined with the multi-objective deterministic optimization method to overcome single point design problems in Aerodynamics. Starting from a statistical definition of stability, the method finds, Nash equilibrium solutions for performance and its stability simultaneously.

We compare the performance of human players against that of the efficient global optimization (EGO) algorithm for an NP-complete powertrain design and control problem. Specifically, we cast this optimization problem as an online competition and received 2391 game plays by 124 anonymous players during the first month from launch. We found that while only a small portion of human players can outperform the algorithm in the long term, players tend to formulate good heuristics early on that can be used to constrain the solution space. Such constraining of the search enhances algorithm efficiency, even for different game settings. These findings indicate that human-assisted computational searches are promising in solving comprehensible yet computationally hard optimal design and control problems, when human players can outperform the algorithm in a short term.
