Abstract This paper presents a study of kinematic and force singularities and their relationship to the controllability of planar and spatial parallel manipulators. Parallel manipulators are classified according to their degrees of freedom, number of output Cartesian variables used to describe their motion and the number of actuated joint inputs. The singularities in the workspace of a parallel manipulator are studied by considering the force transformation matrix which maps the forces and torques in joint space to output forces and torques in Cartesian space. The uncontrollable regions in the workspace of the parallel manipulator are obtained by deriving the equations of motion in terms of Cartesian variables and by using techniques from Lie Algebra. We show that when the number of actuated joint inputs is equal to the number of output Cartesian variables, and the force transformation matrix loses rank, the parallel manipulator is uncontrollable. For the case of manipulators where the number of joint inputs is less than the number of output Cartesian variables, if the constraint forces and torques (represented by the Lagrange multipliers) become infinite, the force transformation matrix loses rank. Finally, we show that the singular and uncontrollable regions in the workspace of a parallel manipulator can be reduced by adding redundant joint actuators and links. The results are illustrated with the help of numerical examples where we plot the singular and uncontrollable regions of parallel manipulators belonging to the above mentioned classes.

Abstract The goal of this paper is to define the n-connected regions in the Cartesian workspace of fully-parallel manipulators, i.e. the maximal regions where it is possible to execute point-to-point motions. The manipulators considered in this study may have multiple direct and inverse kinematic solutions. The N-connected regions are characterized by projection, onto the Cartesian workspace, of the connected components of the reachable configuration space defined in the Cartesian product of the Cartesian space by the joint space. Generalized octree models are used for the construction of all spaces. This study is illustrated with a simple planar fully-parallel manipulator.

The determination of workspace is an essential step in the development of parallel manipulators. By extending the virtual-chain (VC) approach to the type synthesis of parallel manipulators, this technical brief proposes a VC approach to the workspace analysis of parallel manipulators. This method is first outlined before being illustrated by the production of a three-dimensional (3D) computer-aided-design (CAD) model of a 3-RPS parallel manipulator and evaluating it for the workspace of the manipulator. Here, R, P and S denote revolute, prismatic and spherical joints respectively. The VC represents the motion capability of moving platform of a manipulator and is shown to be very useful in the production of a graphical representation of the workspace. Using this approach, the link interferences and certain transmission indices can be easily taken into consideration in determining the workspace of a parallel manipulator.

Abstract The paper presents a new hybrid parallelizable low order algorithm for modeling the dynamic behavior of multi-rigid-body chain systems. The method is based on cutting certain system interbody joints so that largely independent multibody subchain systems are formed. These subchains interact with one another through associated unknown constraint forces f¯c at the cut joints. The increased parallelism is obtainable through cutting the joints and the explicit determination of associated constraint loads combined with a sequential O(n) procedure. In other words, sequential O(n) procedures are performed to form and solve equations of motion within subchains and parallel strategies are used to form and solve constraint equations between subchains in parallel. The algorithm can easily accommodate the available number of processors while maintaining high efficiency. An O[(n+m)Np+m(1+γ)Np+mγlog2Np](0<γ<1) performance will be achieved with Np processors for a chain system with n degrees of freedom and m constraints due to cutting of interbody joints.

Two versions of spatial double-triangular mechanisms are introduced, one with three and one with six degrees of freedom. Using dual-number quaternion algebra, a formula for the direct kinematics of these manipulators is derived. Numerical examples are included.

Abstract This paper presents an algorithm for the determination of the workspace of parallel manipulators. The method described here, which is based on geometrical properties of the workspace, leads to a simple graphical representation of the regions of the three-dimensional Cartesian space that are attainable by the manipulator with a given orientation of the platform. Moreover, the volume of the workspace can be easily computed by performing an integration on its boundary, which is obtained from the algorithm. Examples are included to illustrate the application of the method to a six-degree-of-freedom fully-parallel manipulator.

Abstract The application of the systematic procedures in the derivation of the equations of motion proposed in Part I of this work is demonstrated and implemented in detail. The equations of motion for each subsystem are derived individually and are assembled under the concept of compatibility between the local kinematic properties of the elastic degrees of freedom of those connected elastic members. The specific structure under consideration is characterized as an open loop system with spherical unconstrained chains being capable of rotating about a Hooke’s or universal joint. The rigid body motion, due to two unknown rotations, and the elastic degrees of freedom are mutually coupled and influence each other. The traditional motion superposition approach is no longer applicable herein. Numerical examples for several cases are presented. These simulations are compared with the experimental data and good agreement is indicated.

Abstract The dynamics of a parallel manipulator with three translational degrees of freedom are considered. Two models are developed to characterize the dynamics of the manipulator. The first is a traditional Lagrangian based model, and is presented to provide a basis of comparison for the second approach. The second model is based on a simplified Newton-Euler formulation. This method takes advantage of the kinematic structure of this type of parallel manipulator that allows the actuators to be mounted directly on the base. Accordingly, the dynamics of the manipulator is dominated by the mass of the moving platform, end-effector, and payload rather than the mass of the actuators. This paper suggests a new method to approach the dynamics of parallel manipulators that takes advantage of this characteristic. Using this method the forces that define the motion of moving platform are mapped to the actuators using the Jacobian matrix, allowing a simplified Newton-Euler approach to be applied. This second method offers the advantage of characterizing the dynamics of the manipulator nearly as well as the Lagrangian approach while being less computationally intensive. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the close agreement between the two models.

Abstract This article investigates the dynamic properties of robotic manipulators of parallel architecture. In particular, the dependency of the dynamic equations on the manipulator’s configuration within the workspace is analyzed. The proposed approach is to linearize the dynamic equations locally throughout the workspace and to plot the corresponding natural frequencies and damping ratios. While the results are only applicable for small velocities of the manipulator, they present a first step towards the classification of the nonlinear dynamics of parallel manipulators. The method is applied to a sample manipulator with two degrees-of-freedom. The corresponding numerical results demonstrate the extreme variation of its natural frequencies and damping ratios throughout the workspace.

This paper investigates a novel 4-DOF 3-RRUR parallel manipulator, the number and the characteristics of its degrees of freedom are determined firstly, the rational input plan and the invert and forward kinematic solutions are carried out then. The corresponding numeral example of the forward kinematics is given. This type of parallel manipulators has a symmetrical structure, less accumulated error, and can be used to construct virtual-axis machine tools. The analysis in this paper will play an important role in promoting the application of such manipulators.

The paper deals with the evaluation of acceleration of redundant and nonredundant parallel manipulators. The dynamic model of three degrees-of-freedom (3DOF) parallel manipulator is derived by using the virtual work principle. Based on the dynamic model, a measure is proposed for the acceleration evaluation of the redundant parallel manipulator and its nonredundant counterpart. The measure is designed on the basis of the maximum acceleration of the mobile platform when one actuated joint force is unit and other actuated joint forces are less than or equal to a unit force. The measure for evaluation of acceleration can be used to evaluate the acceleration of both redundant parallel manipulators and nonredundant parallel manipulators. Furthermore, the acceleration of the 4-PSS-PU parallel manipulator and its nonredundant counterpart are compared.
