In the present paper, simulation for shell and tube heat exchanger investigated using CFD techniques. Numerical simulations of the turbulent, three-dimensional fluid flow and heat transfer are performed using Ansys Fluent 6.3. The effect of friction characteristics on the model of heat exchanger is discussed. A RNG κ-ε turbulence model with non-equilibrium wall function and 2nd order upwind is used. The present model is validated with the experimental literature and show a good agreement. The numerical results of the present study predict reasonably agree well with available correlations. Finally the present study model can be used to model a shell and tube heat exchanger with a satisfactory accuracy level in predictions.

Energy generation to the present growing population is a crucial challenge for the power sector. Heat exchangers (HE) plays an important role in the industrial development. In this present work an attempt is made to develop a Shell-and- Tube Heat Exchanger (STHE) with segmental baffles using commercial CATIA V5 and Autodesk CFD Simulation Softwares. TEMA standards are considered for design of STHE with baffle-cut of 25%. 3-different sets of fluids are allowed to pass through the shell and tube sides i.e. Methanol - Sea Water (M-S), Distilled Water – Raw Water (D-R) and Kerosene- Crude Oil (K-C). The boundary conditions imposed for analysis are fluid inlet temperatures and velocities. ϵ-NTU is employed for the validation of simulation results and found good agreement between them. Results are plotted for temperature, pressure and velocity contours. The performance of the STHE is shown best for the K-C fluid set among other fluid sets.

Computational fluid dynamics and heat transfer simulations are conducted for a novel shell-tube type heat exchanger. The heat exchanger consists of tube with a narrow slot oriented in the streamwise direction. Numerical simulations are conducted for the Reynolds number of 1500. The 3D turbulent flow in the tube bank region is modeled by k-ε Reynolds stress averaging method by employing ANSYS FLUENT. 3-D transient flow and heat transfer simulations are conducted to determine the flow structure and temperature profiles in the wake of cylinders in the first row and other rows. The effects of the slot size and the orientation and the arrangement of the cylinder in different configuration will be examined. The slotted tube heat exchanger improved heat transfer by more than 27% compare to the traditional shell-tube heat exchanger without slots. Enhancement in heat transfer is even higher at higher values of Reynolds number.

This article deals with numerical fluid flow and heat transfer simulations of a shell and tube heat exchanger in which cooling water is heated by hot exhaust fumes. This heat exchanger plays a major role in a cogeneration unit, since it is responsible for the effective use of residual heat. The objective of the simulations is to evaluate the effects of various design changes made to the heat exchanger and their influence on the temperature fields and thus on the overall performance and efficiency of the system. In our analysis we looked at the baffles which cause the cross-current flow of water outside the tubes and at the placement of the gas inlet, i.e., on the distribution of the mass flow rate of the exhaust fumes inside these tubes.

In this paper, the results of the experimental investigations of fluid flow and heat transfer in laboratory experimental shell-and-tube heat exchanger are presented. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger is with one pass of warm water on the shell side and two passes of cool water in tube bundle. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger is with 24x2 tubes (U-tube) in triangle layout. During each experimental run, the pressure drops and the fluid temperatures on shell side, along the shell-and-tube heat exchanger (at positions defined in advance) have been measured. Special attention was made to the investigation of the segmental baffles number influence of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger effectiveness.

In this study, the effect of the design on the heat transfer is numerically investigated by using the "wavy inner tube" in a double-pipe heat exchanger. A wavy inner tube was used in the design to give a turbulent effect to the fluid along the inner tube of a double tube heat exchanger. In numerical study, ANSYS 12.0 Fluent code program was used, and the basic protection equations were solved for steady-state, three-dimensional and turbulent flow conditions. The study was examined at Reynolds numbers ranging from 2700 to 5300. The obtained results were compared with the experimental data performed under the same conditions. As a result of this comparison, after it was seen that the results obtained from the numerical analysis and the experimental results were compatible with each other, the wave number of the inner tube was increased and analyzed with the ANSYS fluent code program. When the data obtained as a result of the analyzes were evaluated, it was seen that the highest heat transfer was obtained from the 16 wave tube heat exchanger, which has the highest number of waves and under counter flow conditions. The increase in heat transfer increased by 270% compared to the straight tube.

A numerical model has been developed to analyze the transient three-dimensional and three-phase flow in a bottom stirring ladle with a centered porous plug, which takes into account the steel, gas, and slag phases; it enables us to predict the fluid flow and heat transfer in the very important steel/slag region. The numerical results of the present model show that the obtained relationship between nondimensional areas of slag eye and the Froude number is in good agreement with the reported data.
