Recent experiments resolved nucleation and growth of graphite during solidification of ductile cast iron in 4D using synchrotron X-ray tomography. A numerical model for microstructure formation during solidification is compared with the experiments. Despite very good overall agreement between observations of spheroidal graphite growth and model results, significant deviations exist towards the end of solidification. We use the experimental observations to analyse the relation between graphite growth rate and the state of the particle neighbourhood to pinpoint possible links between growth rate of individual graphite spheres and the overall solidification state. With this insight we revisit existing models for growth of spheroidal graphite and discuss possible modifications in order to correctly describe the critical final stage of solidification.

Two unembalmed and one embalmed human cadaveric head-neck systems were instrumented and subjected to central forehead impact of ballistically suspended 3.07-kg aluminum shell at velocities ranging from 50 to 345 cm/s. Occipital skull accelerations and disk pressures were measured by transducers, while the deformation of the system was determined by framing camera data. The results were found to be in accord with those from corresponding tests in artifical head-neck replica. Initial and terminal X-ray examination of the structure revealed no evidence of either skull or vertebral fractures.

Numerical calculations of the effect of the finite dimensions and orientations of source and crystal are presented for plane and von Hamos Bragg crystal spectrometers for PIXE analysis, combined with a position sensitive (X-ray) detector. Analytical studies of all effects are provided. It is shown that some parameters can produce line shifts and asymmetries. A numerical model for an X-ray diffraction ray-tracing procedure for a crystal Bragg spectrometer is described.
