The Influence of Leader Behaviors, Coach Attributes, and Institutional Variables on Performance and Satisfaction of Collegiate Basketball Teams

Based on Chelladurai and Carron's (1978) multidimensional theory of leadership, this study examined the relationship of leader behaviors, coach attributes, and institutional variables to team performance and athlete satisfaction. Collegiate basketball players (n = 251) representing 23 NAIA teams assessed their coach's leader behaviors and also indicated their satisfaction with various facets of their athletic experience. Regression analyses revealed that neither institutional nor coach attribute variables were significantly related to team performance or satisfaction. Leader behaviors, however, were found to be significantly related to these team outcomes. Analyses with individual satisfaction scores revealed that size of school, coach attributes, and leader behaviors were predictive of athlete satisfaction. Coaches who engaged in more frequent rewarding behavior, social support behavior, and a democratic style of decision-making produced more satisfied athletes. Moreover, younger coaches and those with better previous win/loss records were related to higher levels of athlete satisfaction.

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate differences in Reactive Strength Index Modified (RSIMod) and Flight Time to Contraction Time Ratio (FT:CT) during the countermovement jump (CMJ) performed without the arm swing (CMJNAS) compared to the CMJ with the arm swing (CMJAS), while exploring the relationship within each variable between jump protocols. A secondary purpose sought to explore the relationship between RSIMod and FT:CT during both jump protocols. Twenty-two collegiate basketball players performed both three CMJNAS and three CMJAS on a force plate, during two separate testing sessions. RSIMod was calculated by the flight-time (RSIModFT) and impulse-momentum methods (RSIModIMP). CMJ variables were significantly greater during the CMJAS compared to CMJNAS (p < 0.001). There were large to very large correlations within each variable between the CMJAS and CMJNAS. There were significant positive correlations among RSIModFT, RSIModIMP, and FT:CT during both the CMJAS (r ≥ 0.864, p < 0.001) and CMJNAS (r ≥ 0.960, p < 0.001). These findings identify an increase in RSIMod or FT:CT during the CMJAS, that may provide independent information from the CMJNAS. In addition, either RSIMod or FT:CT may be utilized to monitor changes in performance, but simultaneous inclusion may be unnecessary.

Overuse injuries are common in basketball. To gain insight into their etiology and relationship to mechanics, researchers and clinicians need an understanding of the normal biomechanics of the sport. This study was undertaken with this goal in mind. Lower extremity joint kinematics and structural parameters were collected from 24 players from five professional basketball teams as they performed maneuvers typical of their sport. The results indicated that certain common moves such as the layup landing resulted in knee flexion velocities almost double those seen during the landing phase of running. Lateral movements such as cutting and shuffling placed the foot in extreme positions of supination. Both of these findings have implications for injuries common to basketball such as patellar tendinitis and ankle sprains. It is hoped that this information will initiate a database for normal lower extremity kinematics during basketball and lead to a greater understanding of the relationship of lower extremity movement patterns and injury.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of release parameter changes within individuals (intra-individual) on basketball shooting performance across both free throws and three-point shots, and identify whether any velocity dependence exists. Twelve male basketball players were recorded shooting seventy-five three-point shots (6.75 m) and fifty free throws (4.19 m). Ball release parameters were estimated by combining an analytic trajectory model including drag, a least squares estimator, and gradient-based release distance compensation. Intra-individual release velocity standard deviations (SD) were found to be significantly smaller across all distances ([0.05-0.13 m/s] when compared to statistics reported by other studies [0.2-0.8 m/s]). Despite an increase in lower body motion and a 24% increase in release velocity (p < 0.001) as shooting distance increased, no increases in intra-individual release velocity or angle SD were observed indicating velocity-dependent changes in release parameters were absent. Shooting performance was found to be strongly correlated to the release velocity SD (r = -0.96, p < 0.001, for three-point shots, and r = -0.88, p < 0.001, for free throws). Release angle SD (1.2 ± 0.24 deg, for three-point shots, and 1.3 ± 0.26 deg, for free throws) showed no increase with distance and unrelated to performance. These findings suggest that velocity-dependent factors have minimal contribution to shooting strategies and an individual’s ability to control release velocity at any distance is a primary factor in determining their shooting performance.

The purpose of this study was to meta-analyze the research examining the effects of team learning behavior on team performance. In addition, team size, team type and study setting were investigated as potential moderators of the relationship between team learning behavior and team performance. In total, the database consisted of 21 effect sizes of 17 studies. They were analyzed by using Hunter & Schmidt (2004) meta-analytic procedure. The results indicated that team learning behavior was positively related to team performance and team innovation. The findings suggested that team size, team type, and study setting moderate the relationship of team learning behavior to team performance. The relationship of team learning behavior and team performance was stronger in small teams than in medium and large teams. The stronger relationship of team learning to team performance in project teams was found. Finally, the stronger relationship of team learning behavior to team performance in academic setting than organizational setting was shown. However, in small teams and the academic setting the number of independent studies was less than 5, so it was important to interpret with caution. The implication and limitations of this research were discussed.
