The Influence of Three Least Restrictive Environments on the Content Motor-ALT and Performance of Moderately Mentally Retarded Students

The purpose of this investigation was to determine which of three least restrictive classroom environments would provide the greatest opportunity for mentally retarded students to practice on-task motor behavior. The experimental design used in this investigation consisted of three intact groups, each containing 10 moderately mentally retarded subjects ranging in age from 5 to 12 years. Static and dynamic balance measures were taken to evaluate the acquisition of overall balance performance while controls were placed on intelligence quotients and ability. Academic Learning Time (ALT) was also recorded in order to determine differences in content motor behavior. A significant relationship occurred between static balance and ALT. In addition, the peer tutors significantly increased the time moderately mentally retarded students practiced content motor behavior, which established the peer-tutor classroom setting as the least restrictive environment for enhancing motor performance.

The aim of this study was to analyze the importance of some physical fitness and motor skills for children between 11-13 years at elementary school. A total of 114 primary school children participated as volunteers with a means age of 10.80 ± 0,40 for 5th grade and 12.83 ± 0,38 for 7th grade.In this study, some motor tests were used to detect differences between pre-adolescence and adolescence on male and female. These tests were respectively: for dynamic balance “The Star excursion balance test”, for the agility “T-test”, “V sit and reach” for flexibility test and for explosive strength a “20 m run (0.1s)”. Besides, physical fitness features were taken as height, weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio (WHR).The results of the flexibility showed that the female children had better performances in the 5th grade than those in the 7th grade children (p<0,005). In addition, it was determined that the dynamic balance performance values of the 7th grade female and male children were better than the 5th grade(p<0,005). There were significant differences in agility and explosive strength between the 7th grade female and male children(p<0,005). It was observed that there was an increase in agility, speed and dynamic equilibrium performance data especially from the age of 11 in parallel with growth and development. Especially from this period, it was thought that it was possible to develop motor skills and performance parameters with some sports applications and training.

To compare the effectiveness of a creative dance and a movement exploration program in relation, to balance performance 26 mildly and moderately mentally retarded boys and girls (ages 8 to 13 years) were randomly assigned to one of the programs. Mean ages of the subjects in the dance and movement exploration groups were 10.5 yr. and 11.1 yr., respectively. Each group received 24 lessons of 30 min. each, in the 8-wk. program. Pre- and posttest distance on six balance-beam tasks and stabilometer performance subjected to multivariate analysis of covariance indicated no significant differences.

AbstractIt has been known that short-time auditory stimulation can contribute to the improvement of the balancing ability of the human body. The present study aims to explore the effects of white Gaussian noise (WGN) of different intensities and frequencies on dynamic balance performance in healthy young adults. A total of 20 healthy young participants were asked to stand at a dynamic balance force platform, which swung along the x-axis with an amplitude of ± 4° and frequency of 1 Hz. Their center of pressure (COP) trajectories were recorded when they were stimulated by WGN of different intensities (block 1) and different frequencies (block 2). A traditional method and detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) were used for data preprocessing. The authors found that only with 75–85 dB WGN, the COP parameters improved. WGN frequency did not affect the dynamic balance performance of all the participants. The DFA results indicated stimulation with 75 dB WGN enhanced the short-term index and reduced the crossover point. Stimulation with 500 Hz and 2500 Hz WGN significantly enhanced the short-term index. These results suggest that 75 dB WGN and 500 Hz and 2500 Hz WGN improved the participants’ dynamic balance performance. The results of this study indicate that a certain intensity of WGN is indispensable to achieve a remarkable improvement in dynamic balance. The DFA results suggest that WGN only affected the short-term persistence, indicating the potential of WGN being considered as an adjuvant therapy in low-speed rehabilitation training.

Background: Sports-related concussion is a worldwide problem. There is a concern that an initial concussion can cause prolonged subclinical disturbances to sensorimotor function that increase the risk of subsequent injury. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether a history of sports-related concussion has effects on static and dynamic balance performance in adolescent rugby players. Hypothesis: Dynamic balance would be worse in players with a history of concussion compared with those with no history of concussion. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Male adolescent rugby players aged 14 to 18 years from 5 schools were recruited before the start of the 2018-2019 playing season. Participants completed questionnaires and physical tests, including dynamic Y balance and single-leg static balance (eyes closed) tests, while performing single and dual tasks. Dynamic balance was assessed using inertial sensor instrumentation. Dependent variables were normalized reach distance and the sample entropy (SEn) of the 3 axes ( x, y, and z). Results: Of the 195 participants, 100 reported a history of concussion. Those with a history of concussion demonstrated higher SEn in all directions, with highest values during anterior (standardized mean difference [SMD], 0.4; 95% CI, 0.0-0.7; P = .027) and posteromedial (SMD, 0.5; 95% CI, 0.2-0.9; P = .004) reach directions compared with those with no history. There was no difference between groups (concussion history vs control) in traditional Y balance reach distances in the anterior or posteromedial directions or single-leg static balance during both single- ( P = .47) and dual-task ( P = .67) conditions. Conclusion: Adolescent rugby union athletes with a history of concussion had poorer dynamic balance during performance tasks compared with healthy controls. Static single-leg balance tests, either single or dual task, may not be sensitive enough to detect sensorimotor deficits in those with a history of concussion.

This article describes the role of the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE) in their support of special education administrators in the context of the aftermath of P. L. 94-142. The forces and factors that are affecting the role incumbent in the special education administrative position are presented in ways in which CASE is attempting to serve its membership in a period of disequilibrium and change. The article is based upon both solicited and unsolicited comments from administrators from around the country. It highlights past and future activities that CASE is seeking to develop and implement in support of leadership persons in delivery of services of all handicapped children in the least restrictive environment.
