Attracting and retaining academic administrators are quite hard in most universities, due to the fact that, having an administrative position is considered as burdensome for most academicians. This study investigated the effect of emotional exhaustion on job involvement among academic administrators in Malaysian universities. A total of 190 academic administrators from both public and private universities in Malaysia participated in this study. Data analysis revealed a moderately high level of emotional exhaustion experienced by the academic administrators and average level of job involvement. In addition to that, this study also found a significant inverse relationship between emotional exhaustion and job involvement. Knowledge gained from this study could contribute to empower university management to better comprehend the impact of emotional exhaustion on the well-being as well as performance of the employees, specifically academic administrators.

Anti-corruption has garnered increasing attention, especially in China, where President Xi launched an influential and far-reaching anti-corruption campaign in late 2012. A better understanding of the effects of anti-corruption efforts on the hotel sector can reveal insights into the development of the Chinese hotel industry. Based on the quarterly data on China’s hotel industry in 49 cities from quarter 2 of 2010 to quarter 4 of 2015, this study investigates how the anti-corruption campaign (measured by anti-corruption inspections and the number of corruption lawsuits) has influenced hotel industry demand in China. Hypotheses are developed from China’s unique cultural environment of guanxi combined with rent-seeking theory and the crowding-out principle. Empirical results confirm a significant and negative effect of the anti-corruption campaign on hotel lodging and food and beverage demand. Several factors, including a city’s administrative position as a provincial capital, hotel class, level of tourism dependence, and local residents’ entertainment expenditure, are found to moderate the effect of the anti-corruption campaign on hotels’ lodging demand significantly. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed in light of these findings.

The article looks at the problem insufficiently explored within Russian historiography, namely the administrative and managerial activities carried out by the 19th-century Russian historian S.M. Solovyov. This research aims to study the theoretical and practical contribution made by Solovyov to the development and implementation of the basic principles within the system of higher education in Russia. The article shows his achievements, potential, and the difficulties he faced in the course of solution of the organizational and managerial tasks. An important result of the research, which reflects its novelty, is a comprehensive exploration of the institutional source materials. This approach allows the authors to understand and restore the history of the development of Russian universities at the stage of implementation of the 1863 Charter, which was characterized by unconventional situations in the relations between the bodies of power and the university professorial corporation. The work also describes Solovyov’s strategy and tactics as an administrator in the context of violations of the University Charter of 1863 by the government circles. The authors make conclusions about Solovyov’s moral qualities, who, as a true historian, while holding a senior administrative position, understood his duty to his country as protection of the interests of science and the principles of university autonomy and serving education.

Through an account of New Spanish playwright Juan Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza’s path to secure an administrative position for himself in seventeenth-century Spain’s Hapsburg administrative apparatus, this essay discusses the cultural and social conditions that led to the administration’s persistent preoccupation with its public image and, in particular, with the safeguarding of its authority. I argue that the instances of public contempt expressed by his peers – on account of the severe bodily deformity Ruiz de Alarcón suffered from – played a decisive role in the decision of the Council of the Indies to ban the playwright from any public office. The council’s behaviour reflects the restraining influence that the Hapsburg administration exercised over the physical appearance of state officials. This essay also discusses how Ruiz de Alarcón challenges the logic behind this disciplining of bodily appearance in his play Las paredes oyen.

This study aims to determine the demographic factors that affect lecturer publication performances in Indonesia. Data of lecturer profile consisting of academic rank, administrative position, highest education, the country where lecturers received their degrees (overseas or regional), age, work years, and gender was collected from the Ministry of Research online database. This study employs data from 658 lecturers in the faculties of economics and business from 7 universities in Indonesia. The lecturer publication score was obtained from the Indonesian research assessment system called SINTA. To find out the relationship of these factors on the performance of lecturers' publications, multivariate regression analysis with a 95% confidence level was carried out and followed by the Tukey test. Academic rank, highest education, and the university where the lecturer received their degree had a significant influence (p-value <0.05) on the 3-years and overall publication performance. Gender and administrative positions only have a significant effect on the 3-years publication performance, while age and work years did not significantly influence publication performance. The results of this study can be used by lecturer management policymakers in developing countries, especially in Indonesia to make appropriate strategies in developing lecturer resources.

Abstract Objectives To explore the health research capacity (HRC) and factors associated with professional and technical personnel (PTP) in a first-class tertiary hospital in northwest China. Methods We collected the repeated measurement data from a first-class tertiary hospital in northwest China between 2013 and 2017. HRC of PTP was assessed by a comprehensive evaluation system and measured by research capacity score (RCS). The participants were divided into research group (RCS >0) and comparison group (RCS = 0); participants of the comparison group were selected by two-stage stratified random sampling. Multilevel model for repeated measures was used to investigate the potential factors associated with HRC. Results A total of 924 PTP were included (308 in the research group and 616 in the comparison group). This study found consistent growth in RCS and associated 95% CIs for the hospital during 2013 and 2017. The linear multilevel model showed PTP with a doctorate degree had higher RCS than those with a master’s degree (β, 1.74; P <0.001), bachelor’s degree (β, 2.02; P <0.001) and others without a degree (β, 2.32; P <0.001). Furthermore, the PTP with intermediate (β, 0.13; P = 0.015), vice-high (β, 0.27; P = 0.001) and senior (β, 0.63; P <0.001) professional titles had higher RCS than those with junior positions. Compared with PTP in the administration, those in paediatrics had higher RCS (β, 0.28; P = 0.047) though similar to PTP in other departments. PTP with an administrative position had a higher RCS than those in non-administrative positions (β, 0.26; P <0.001). The RCS increased with the research fund (β, 0.15; P <0.001). However, no associations were found between RCS and sex, age, ethnic, graduate school or technical type. Conclusions HRC with associated variation of PTP for the hospital in northwest China increasingly improved and degree, professional title, administrative position, and research fund were related to HRC of PTP. Multi-central prospective studies are needed to clarify the potential relationship of related factors and HRC of PTP.

As internationalization efforts in higher education have grown in scale and impact over the last few decades, sound institutional leadership, policies, and practices that are rooted in a clear appreciation of the purpose of internationalization have become even more crucial for advancing socially responsible standards of success (Brandenburg et al., 2019). Areas such as developing a strategic plan for internationalization and fostering institutional partnerships globally are key responsibilities that require effective leadership and are critical for higher education institutions (Kwai, 2017). Senior International Officers: Essential Roles and Responsibilities is one of the few existing guides on the emerging role of the Senior International Officer (SIO), an administrative position often tasked with the oversight of all matters relating to internationalization.
