SummaryEvidence of substantial dextral strike-slip displacements along the Caledonoid fault-set of northern Lleyn is revealed by the distribution of Pre-Cambrian igneous and metamorphic rocks, Ordovician volcanic rocks and Caledonian ‘early granodioritic’ intrusions. These apparently occurred prior to some smaller sinistral strike-slip movements which left total net dextral displacements of 91/2 km. Both types of movement were completed before the Caledonoid faults were disrupted by NNW sinistral faulting and more intrusions of Lower Old Red Sandstone age were emplaced.


The Chert Bed of Middle, or possibly Lower, Old Red Sandstone age discovered by Dr. W. Mackie (1914) at Rhynie, in Aberdeenshire, has become famous among palæo-botanists on account of the beautifully preserved remains of the earliest known land plants, described by the late Dr. Kidston and Prof. Lang (1917-1921). In addition to the plants, however, the Rhynie Chert also contains animal remains, for the most part very small and in a very fragmentary condition, although the fragments themselves are in many cases exceedingly well preserved. The vast majority of these animal remains are evidently Crustacean in character, and it was at first thought (see British Association Report, 1919, p. 110) that they belonged to several, or at least to two, different species. Subsequent work has, however, convinced me that all the Crustacean remains so far seen in the Rhynie Chert belong to the one species described in this paper.

In order to study the relationship between the design parameters of the shield machine and the strength of rock, the behaviours of rocks under the conventional triaxial compression, the complete stress-strain curves under different confining pressures of three typical rocks, i.e. granite, limestone and red sandstone, were taken out for analysis. From the curves, the values of elastic modulus E and Poisson's ratio μ were gained and the relationships between the following parameters were figured out, which are peak strength versus confining pressure, residual strength versus confining pressure, strain at peak strength versus confining pressure, and strain at residual strength versus confining pressure. According to the values and relationships, the complete stress-strain curves were divided into three parts. For each part, a constitutive equation was established by using the strain softening trilinear elastic-brittle-plastic constitutive model, and all the related parameters in the constitutive equations were also presented, which provide a theoretical foundation for the digital design of the cutter head and cutters of Shield machine.

Obtained stress distribution of hammer bottom according to the analysis of horizontal and vertical red sandstone fill dry density of the hammer bottom after dynamic compaction; affirmed the stress distribution situation of the hammer bottom through comparative analysis of the test results by laboratory and field monitoring.
