The plastic deformation kinetics of 95.5Sn4Cu0.5Ag solder joints were determined in monotonic loading shear over the temperature range of 25°–150°C using three types of tests: (a) constant shear rate, (b) constant shear stress (creep), and (c) differential tests (changes in shear rate or temperature during an otherwise isothermal constant shear rate test). The deformation kinetics were evaluated in terms of the Dorn high temperature plastic deformation equation γ˙p=A(μb/kT)D(b/d)P(τ/μ)n where γ˙p is the shear rate, μ the shear modulus, b the Burgers vector, D the appropriate diffusion coefficient, d the grain size and τ the shear stress. A, p, and n are constants whose values depend on the rate controlling mechanism. It was found that n increased with stress from ~4 at 2 MPa to ~20 at 25 MPa, relatively independent of temperature. The activation ΔH was determined to be 21.1 ± 2 kcal/mole. The constant A, however, decreased with temperature from a value of ~1018 at 25°C to ~1010 at 150°C. The values of n and ΔH suggest that dislocation glide and climb is the rate controlling mechanism and hence that p ≈ 0. It is speculated that the large decrease in A with temperature may be the result of an effect on the microstructure.

A method of the thermovision study for solving the problems of the experimental mechanics is presented. The method of the experimental study of deformation and fracture is based on the registration and interpretation of the infrared radiation pattern of a sample, which is caused by plastic deformations and material fracture. The thermofilm shows the kinetics of the sample deformation. Thermograms allow estimation of the plastic deformation zones. The characteristic changes in the temperature of a sample correspond to the limiting states of the material. Examples of studying the deformation and fracture of constructional steels under the conditions of the homogeneous and heterogeneous limiting states with the use of the thermovision method are given.

This work examines the dynamics of nonlinear large deformation of polymeric gels, and the kinetics of gel deformation is carried out through the coupling of existing hyperelastic theory for gels with kinetic laws for diffusion of small molecules. As finite element (FE) models for the transient swelling process is not available in commercial FE software, we develop a customized FE model/methodology which can be used to simulate the transient swelling process of hydrogels. The method is based on the similarity between diffusion and heat transfer laws by determining the equivalent thermal properties for gel kinetics. Several numerical examples are investigated to explore the capabilities of the present FE model, namely: a cube to study free swelling; one-dimensional constrained swelling; a rectangular block fixed to a rigid substrate to study swelling under external constraints; and a thin annulus fixed at the inner core to study buckling phenomena. The simulation results for the constrained block and one-dimensional constrained swelling are compared with available experimental data, and these comparisons show a good degree of similarity. In addition to this work providing a valuable tool to researchers for the study of gel kinetic deformation in the various applications of soft matter, we also hope to inspire works to adopt this simplified approach, in particular to kinetic studies of diffusion-driven mechanisms.
