Objective. The purpose is to study the organic matter transformation in Podzols from the middle taiga zone.Methods. The study materials are arable lands from the central regions of the Komi Republic. These lands are not agriculturally used since the early 90-ies of the former century. The soil analyses are done according to the common methods.Results. The study allows for the humus profile structure of Podzols along with the following successive stages as meadow idle land young forest dwarf shrub-green moss spruce forest. It also describes the mechanisms of post-agrogenic humus transformation in agricultural sod Podzols due to the self­ restoring succession.Conclusion. Initially, the post-agrogenic soils normally repeat agrozems by characteristics. The upper soil part forms a thin grey-humus (sod) horizon. It contains large amounts of humus, exchangeable cations, and nutrition elements. The specific synthesis and destruction processes of humic substances at the meadow idle land stage change the qualitative humus composition. In contrast with arable lands, the humus composition is dominated with fulvic acids as being best appropriate to the concerned bioclimatic zone. The humuc-fulvic humus composition holds only in the upper old-arable soil part of the meadow idle land. The appearance of pioneer tree species increases the dominating position of FAs and the Cha/Cfa ratio resembles that for forest soil. The organic matter is poor in nitrogen compounds, especially at the young forest stage. By the C/N ratio, the post-agrogenic soils also gradually get close to naturally formed soils under virgin forest.

Abstract The soil organic matter (SOM) is searched for the biomarkers and specific features associated with the effect of wildfires by the case study of peat soil, Rheic Hemic Histosol (Lignic), in the south of the middle taiga of the Komi Republic. It is shown that fires considerably influence the peat organic matter. Pyrogenic activity is assessed according to the content of charcoal particles. SOM is examined using solid-state 13C-NMR spectroscopy to determine the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene polycarboxylic acids (BPCAs). The used methods allow for diagnosing the effects of wildfires on the SOM composition. In the horizons with the signs of pyrogenesis, the share of carbon represented by aromatic fragments increases as well as the PAH concentration, mainly at the expense of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and chrysene. The carbon stock of pyrogenically modified compounds, amounting to 4.4 kg/m2, is for the first time assessed in the European north based on the BPCA content. The characteristics of pyrogenically changed organic compounds and their fragments obtained by different methods correlate well: the Pearson coefficient for the correlation of the carbon content in aromatic compounds (Caryl) with total BPCA content is R = 0.84 (p < 0.05) and with individual BPCAs, R = 0.81–0.90 (p < 0.05).

Abstract Litter plays an important role in the carbon cycle of forest ecosystems incorporating significant amount of carbon as a result of annual partial die-off of the biomass and releasing it during complex multistage processes of organic matter decomposition. The balance of these processes in the forests of permafrost zone significantly shifts towards the accumulation of dead organic matter. That makes the assessment of litter stock in these ecosystems particularly relevant, especially in relation to the predicted consequences of climate change in the study region. On the territory of middle taiga of Central Siberia, 14 sampling plots were established in the various landforms (slopes of different exposition, lowlands and uplands). The carbon stock in litter of the main forest types of the studied area varied from 0.47 to 4.46 kgC/m2. Also, the paper considers composition of litter accumulated in these ecosystems, including the ratio between fresh litterfall, fermented and humified plant residues, and dead roots. Our results demonstrated that fermented plant residues prevailed in the litter composition in most types of studied forest ecosystems due to specificity of hydrothermal regime and quality of litterfall. The results obtained might be applied to refine the carbon budget of Siberian forests.

The treatment with N-methylpyrrolidone of sedimentary rocks of the Ayuvinskoye deposit allowed obtaining ash-free concentrates with different yields, depending on the Corg content in the rock. The structure of the resulting concentrates was studied by elemental analysis, thermogravimetry, and pyrolysis, followed by analysis of the products by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The TGA curves indicated similar structural features of the organic matter of the rocks and the concentrates obtained from them. The composition of the thermolysis products of the concentrate indicated the preferential extraction of aliphatic structures, represented by n-alkyl chains, relative to aromatic fragments, which was associated with the specific structure of the initial organic matter of solid fossil fuels.

Abstract The Siberian silkworm (Dendrolimus sibiricus Tschetv.) is a defoliator pest that poses a significant threat to coniferous forest stands. Over the past decades, several large outbreaks of this species have occurred in Siberia (Russia), which has led to changes in forest ecosystems and an increase of expenses involved in reforestation. Adults capture new territories in the process of migration, therefore, a set of measures is needed to register the number and prevent further dispersal of the moth. One of methods of trapping is glue traps with synthetic pheromone. 16 district forestries located in the middle taiga subzone, with a total area of 151 850 hectares, were surveyed as a part of the phytosanitary monitoring of the Siberian silkworm in the Komi Republic (Russia). Analysis of 773 pheromone traps showed 414 males of the target species that were identified by their genitals. The highest indicators of catchability were found in three district forestries. Taking into account the results obtained, it was proposed to continue the monitoring using the pheromone traps, to survey more northern forest districts and to carry out subsequent searches for preimaginal stages of the silkworm in the forest districts of Priluzsky district. The study will be useful for predicting the further spread of the silkworm and for developing optimal containment and control of the pest.

In this paper, we analyze applicability of Land degradation neutrality (LDN) concept of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification for Russian boreal forests. In this regard, it is necessary to adapt the three global LDN indicators (land cover, land productivity, and carbon stocks) to the assessment of land degradation processes of boreal forests in Russia and around the world. The proposed study concludes that landscapes with different types of forest restoration dynamics can be viewed as the object in forest land dynamic studies. The proposed research also suggests the set of LDN indicators adapted for boreal forests conditions. In order to assess LDN proxies we calculated the retrospective and projected net carbon balance in the middle taiga zone of Noshulskoye forest domain (Komi Republic, Russia) using the CBM CFS model. Here we explored 3 scenarios of forest net carbon balance under the three different felling regimes. It was shown that the net carbon balance cannot be applied as an independent LDN indicator, since it does not take into account changes in species diversity and primary productivity. We also suggest that industrial felling should imitate natural types of restoration dynamics in order to achieve LDN targets. It can be reached through minimization of forest felling at sites with fireless types of succession, which accumulate maximum stocks of dead phytomass matter and serve as forest refuges supporting biodiversity.
