Clothing for the disabled

The choice of comfortable clothing for disabled patients is seldom considered in medical and nursing education and little is published about it. It is important because a person who cannot be acceptably dressed is virtually barred from education, employment and normal social life.

Studies have highlighted the importance of using new technologies during the planning of educational and didactic paths to develop skills and functions in disabled patients (Bruschi, 2001). Assistive technologies represent real opportunities of e-participation to social life (Calvani, 2011; Chiappetta Caiola, 2009), which also works as scaffolding to promote developing processes (Cooke & Husey, 2002). The authors’ contribution examines the importance of technologies in supporting subjects with mental retardation. It shows the usability of many inputs that offer disabled patients the possibility to exercise cognitive styles, their own characteristics and their own autonomies to increase motivation and self esteem. The aims of this research are a) verify the effectiveness of didactic software based on Precision Teaching method; b) verify gender differences. For this study 40 children have been selected (20 boys and 20 girls) with and without mental retardation. The research consisted of 3 phases: pre-training phase, training phase and post-training phase. Results show learning improvements in each group; in spite of students’ difficulties, the use of Precision Teaching has reduced significantly the initial cognitive gap, which refers to the number of correct responses (accuracy) and to time of response (fluency) relative to the learning of how to use money.

Abstract The term engagement was used in critical cultural studies as a term that name an attitude of scholars, and a feature of cultural and scientific texts, that are based on the experience of an individual or a group of people. In the recent two decades, many of Polish academic narrations on the field of cultural production focused on the issue of engagement. In the article, a phenomenon of engagement in the context of disability studies is considered. The main objective of the article is the analysis of disability studies as a new model of experience- oriented discipline. What is particularly interesting is a possibility to relabel experiences of the disabled as a significant report on the status of modern narrations, which should include different minority bodies. The main aim of disability studies is to present a project of engaged attitudes towards social sustainability that is not based on exclusions of any social groups of people. Studies on disability are also introduced as an experience-oriented discipline in the field of engaged humanities. This article aims at presenting critical narrations on the issue of engagement in other to connect disability studies to the engaged humanities. Promoting engagement in many areas of culture and social life seems to be a way of introducing more open politics towards difference, and social sphere of life that is equally accessible for everyone.

Communication requires unconditional respect for the other. Acknowledging the qualities of the people   is a basis for good communication.  Communication starts when you accept the people the way they are. The social, economic and technical development provides opportunities for good professional realization of people with special educational needs.  The resistance, striving for “survival” and successful “introduction” into the social life are a prerequisite for success. The people who are stigmatized and their families are aware that once they have been labeled, they should have to overcome this stigma and to take the maximum possible good out of this label. Positive stigma stimulates the people with disabilities seek more contacts, to become more independent and to realize themselves adequately in the social life. The survey of attitudes and motivation scale contact with people with disabilities give reliable information about what is the attitude of students towards people with disabilities and what were their contacts. The successful integration into society of people with special educational needs depends also on the perceptions and attitudes of the professionals who work with them too. Undoubtedly, the attitudes and models for the disabled people change and will continue to change. In this context the disabled people should develop social identity and public awareness, but not only in their stigmatized group, but in a broad social aspect.

Much attention is paid to adapting public buildings or transport for the disabled. Not much, however, to spaces where the journey to a given destination begins. The path that has to be walked from the apartment until reaching public transport can significantly hinder the lives of people with reduced mobility. A housing estate is also a place where people spend a large part of their free time. Therefore, in order not to exclude disabled people from social life, designing such places in an accessible way is extremely important. And exactly this issue was raised in this article.

The aim of this study was to determine the perspectives of the students of the physiotherapy and rehabilitation department towards the disabled and their attitudes towards the education of the disabled. Sixty-eight volunteer students (50 females, 18 males) studying at Pamukkale University School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation and taking the Psychosocial Rehabilitation course in the Spring Semester of the 2020-2021 Academic Year participated in the study. The Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale (ATDPS) was used to evaluate the positive and negative attitudes of the students towards the disabled individuals, and the Attitude Scale for the Training of Individuals with Disabilities (ASTID) was used to determine their views on the education of the disabled individuals. Evaluations were made at the beginning and end of the relevant semester. The mean age of the students was 19.44±1.07 years. In the first evaluation, the mean of ATDPS was 50.75±13.92 and the total score of ASTID was 51.04±18.42 points. At the last evaluation, the ATDPS score increased to 78.36±13.77 and the ASTID total score to 93.13±7.48 (p=0.0001). Providing students with basic information about various disability groups and their rehabilitation will increase the level of awareness towards people with disabilities. It is important to develop positive attitudes towards the disabled throughout society in order for the disabled to feel themselves as a part of social life and to increase their participation in social life. It will contribute to the increase of the social awareness of the organizations to be organized regarding the education of the disabled and disabled people. Organizations to be held regarding disabled people and the education of the disabled will contribute to the increase of social awareness.

Human diversity plays a crucial role in the contemporary themes of social justice. A positive recognition of disability has become a part of the inescapable human diversity that enriches our experience. Every civilized society therefore, must provide for adequate physical and financial resources for the education and rehabilitation of the disabled so that they can enjoy a life of freedom, self respect and take active part in social life. The present study is an attempt to understand the current scenario of the available services for the disabled in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Background. The process of a comprehensive rehabilitation of the disabled person may be more complicated when the diagnosis becomes vague and uncertain. Unknown data about the patient’s past, mental, physical or vocational background, may cast a different light on the process. The patient’s diagnosis sometimes becomes an enigma. Using the model of Venn, the patient’s situation shifts from one circle to another. The only logical solution in these cases is to use the Occam’s Razor. Purpose. To draw the attention of rehabilitation medicine professionals to the problem of clients whose diagnoses are vague and uncertain and to share with the readers my personal thoughts on this topic. Methods. Reviewing literature and sharing with the readers the author’s 43 years of clinical experience in the field of rehabilitation medicine. Results and Conclusions. A PubMed query revealed 1479 articles with the words „diagnostic enigma”. The search term „diagnostic enigma in rehabilitation medicine” resulted only in four articles. In the long process of rehabilitation of disabled patients, some patients’ diagnoses change during the hospitalization phase and some diagnoses become unclear. The rehabilitation process becomes complicated and sometimes incomplete. Implications for Rehabilitation Medicine:  1. In most instances, patients are referred to rehabilitation medicine facilities with definite diagnoses. 2. The long process of a comprehensive rehabilitation of the disabled person may be more complicated when, prior to the discharge, the final diagnosis becomes vague and uncertain. 3. Facts about the patient’s past mental, physical or vocational background may cast a different light on the process. The patient’s diagnosis sometimes becomes an enigma.

Abstract Background In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the nursing profession faces significant challenges including failure to recruit high school students into nursing education; poor nursing identity, and lack of awareness about the nursing profession. Exploring the level of awareness about the nursing profession and Understanding factors that influence the nursing image is crucial for planning effective intervention programs to recruit and retain students into nursing education, and to improve nurses' sense of identity.Methods The purpose of the present study was to explore the public image of the nursing profession. A descriptive cross-sectional study included 502 adults; 106 males and 396 females, their mean age was 22.93 ± 6.76 years. Data collected included; socio-demographic data, gender preference in getting nursing care, knowledge, and perceived barriers to pursue a nursing career. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.0.Results Only 32.5% preferred to get nursing care by Saudis. The nursing profession was not viewed as a respected job as 71.5% of participants would be ashamed of having a nurse in their families. The study revealed a low median knowledge score (50.0, IQR: 50.0-66.7)). The study highlighted a number of sociocultural barriers to pursue a nursing career: the mixed working environment (35.9%), delayed marriage of female nurses (20.3%), and the negative effect of nursing profession on social life (64.5%).Conclusion Poor knowledge and sociocultural perceived barriers are the main factors contributing to the negative public image of the nursing profession in Saudi Arabia. The findings of our study will help to implement effective strategies to modify the negative perception and raise community awareness about the nursing profession.
