The article is devoted to the names connected with one of people’s ancient occupations such as cattle breeding. Being an important source of all kinds of data, they are of interest from both linguistic and historicalethnographic points of view. The research is conducted on the material of the appealative and micro-toponymic lexis available in the patois of Kostroma Oblast. The article studies the names of pastures «podskotina» and «poskotina» as well as micro-toponyms formed on their basis. The attention is paid to distribution and features peculiar to the semantics of these words in Russian folk patois. The paper singles out basic meanings of the pasture names under study in Kostroma patois. The author provides examples of their use in live folk speech as well as explanations of their meanings by the dialect native speakers. The study of the pasture names functioning features in folki speech makes it possible to refer their considerable part to micro-toponyms science, within small space, they, being names of single objects, are intermediate between common nouns and proper nouns. The micro-toponyms reflect main features of geographic terms being a ground of their origin. The research of the microtoponyms shows that in the toponymic system of Kostroma Oblast there are names formed due to transition of an appealative to a micro-toponym without any transformations according to the scheme «an appealative + an attribute characterising the called object» and on the basis of case-prepositional construction. The compound names more often are connected with the names of settlements and anthroponyms (usually, with possesive meaning). A pasture name frequently becomes a name of its location and adjacent objects; the name is reserved for the latter ones in case of the pasture disappearance. There are words «podskotina» and «poskotina» as both appealatives and micro-toponyms in the patois of many districts of Kostroma Oblast. The study of these local geographic terms, along with micro-toponyms formed from them, makes it possible to find out their semantics, features of functioning in the patois more precisely and completely and to present the data in different studies.

AbstractIRTS is a small cryogenically cooled telescope onboard the small space platform SFU (Space Flyer Unit). SFU will be launched with the new Japanese HII rocket on January 1994 and retrieved by the space shuttle. The IRTS telescope has an aperture of only 15 cm diameter, but is optimized to observe diffuse extended infrared sources. Four focal plane instruments are being developed under collaboration between Japan and the U.S.A. IRTS covers a wide wavelength range from near-infrared to submillimeter region, and has a capability for the spectroscopic measurement. Due to newly developed detectors, the sky will be surveyed with very high sensitivities. IRTS will provide valuable data on cosmology, galactic structure, cosmic dust, etc.

The size and limited dexterity of current surgical robotic systems are factors which limit their usefulness. To improve the level of assimilation of surgical robots in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), a compact, lightweight surgical robotic positioning mechanism with four degrees of freedom (DOF) (three rotational DOF and one translation DOF) is proposed in this paper. This spatial mechanism based on a bevel-gear wrist is remotely driven with three rotation axes intersecting at a remote rotation center (the MIS entry port). Forward and inverse kinematics are derived, and these are used for optimizing the mechanism structure given workspace requirements. By evaluating different spherical geared configurations with various link angles and pitch angles, an optimal design is achieved which performs surgical tool positioning throughout the desired kinematic workspace while occupying a small space bounded by a hemisphere of radius 13.7 cm. This optimized workspace conservatively accounts for collision avoidance between patient and robot or internally between the robot links. This resultant mechanism is highly compact and yet has the dexterity to cover the extended workspace typically required in telesurgery. It can also be used for tool tracking and skills assessment. Due to the linear nature of the gearing relationships, it may also be well suited for implementing force feedback for telesurgery.

Aiming at the problem that color image is difficult to quantify, this paper proposes an evaluation method of color image for small space based on factor analysis (FA) and gene expression programming (GEP) and constructs a correlation model between color image factors and comprehensive color image. The basic color samples of small space and color images are evaluated by semantic differential method (SD method), color image factors are selected via dimension reduction in FA, factor score function is established, and by combining the entropy weight method to determine each factor weights then the comprehensive color image score is calculated finally. The best fitting function between color image factors and comprehensive color image is obtained by GEP algorithm, which can predict the users’ color image values. A color image evaluation system for small space is developed based on this model. The color evaluation of a control room on AC frequency conversion rig is taken as an example, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method. It also can assist the designers in other color designs and provide a fast evaluation tool for testing users’ color image.

The necessity of discussing so great a subject as the Theory of the Vertebrate Skull in the small space of time allotted by custom to a lecture, has its advantages as well as its drawbacks. As, on the present occasion, I shall suffer greatly from the disadvantages of the limitation, I will, with your permission, avail myself to the uttermost of its benefits. It will be necessary for me to assume much that I would rather demonstrate, to suppose known much that I would rather set forth and explain at length; but on the other hand, I may consider myself excused from entering largely either into the history of the subject, or into lengthy and controversial criticisms upon the views which are, or have been, held by others. The biological science of the last half-century is honourably distinguished from that of preceding epochs, by the constantly increasing prominence of the idea, that a community of plan is discernible amidst the manifold diversities of organic structure. That there is nothing really aberrant in nature; that the most widely different organisms are connected by a hidden bond; that an apparently new and isolated structure will prove, when its characters are thoroughly sifted, to be only a modification of something which existed before,—are propositions which are gradually assuming the position of articles of faith in the mind of the investigators of animated nature, and are directly, or by implication, admitted among the axioms of natural history.
