The results of evaluation of powdery mildew resistance in winter barley varieties in 285 Czech Official Trials conducted at 20 locations were analysed. Over the period, the number of varieties tested per year increased from four to seven in 1976−1985 to 53−61 in 2002−2005. To assess the resistance of varieties, only trials with sufficient disease severity were used. In 1976−2000, six varieties (1.7% of the varieties tested in the given years) ranked among resistant (average resistance of a variety in a year > 7.5) including NR-468 possessing the gene <i>Mla13</i>, KM-2099 with <i>mlo</i> and Marinka with the genes <i>Mla7</i>, <i>MlaMu2</i>. In 2001−2005, already 33 varieties (16.9%) ranked among resistant, of which Traminer possessing the genes <i>Ml(St)</i> and <i>Ml(IM9 </i> dominated. The proportion of susceptible varieties (average resistance ≤ 5.5) did not change in the two mentioned periods. Two-rowed varieties began to be tested as late as in 1990 (the first variety was Danilo), however, no difference was found in the resistance of two- and six-rowed varieties. Using an example of two pairs of varieties (Dura-Miraj and Marinka-Tiffany) with identical genes for specific resistance but with different resistance in the field, the efficiency of non-specific resistance is discussed. The resistance of domestic and foreign varieties was similar in 1994−2000; however, in 2001−2005 the difference was 0.75 point to disadvantage of domestic ones.

Abstract If the face-cycles at all the vertices in a map are of same type then the map is said to be a semi-equivelar map. There are eleven types of semi-equivelar maps on the torus. In 1972 Altshuler has presented a study of Hamiltonian cycles in semi-equivelar maps of three types {36}, {44} and {63} on the torus. In this article we study Hamiltonicity of semi-equivelar maps of the other eight types {33, 42}, {32, 41, 31, 41}, {31, 61, 31, 61}, {34, 61}, {41, 82}, {31, 122}, {41, 61, 121} and {31, 41, 61, 41} on the torus. This gives a partial solution to the well known Conjecture that every 4-connected graph on the torus has a Hamiltonian cycle.

Purpose The infill masonry walls in recent worldwide earthquakes have shown that it is necessary to conduct further studies to characterize the behavior of existing buildings and, in particular, of infill masonry walls under seismic activity. The lack of characterization studies of infill walls made by concrete blocks justifies the investigation reported herein, which includes experimental tests on sample sets to evaluate the mechanical properties of masonry components (units and mortar) and assemblages (wallets) made with masonry units from Faial. For the later, normal compressive, diagonal tensile/shear and out-of-plane flexural strengths were obtained according to standard procedures, the results of which are presented in the manuscript. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach One experimental campaign was conducted with the aim to mechanically characterize concrete blocks masonry samples. Several experimental tests were carried out in full-scale masonry concrete wallets according to the constructive methodology used. Findings Based on the data obtained from the mechanical characterization tests of the concrete masonry blocks, it can be seen that under simple compression, the masonry specimens’ average resistance is about 6 times superior than the average resistance to diagonal shear/tension, while the stiffness is almost doubled. In simple compression tests, it was observed that the masonry specimens cracked in areas of higher drilling of the blocks. In the tensile tests by diagonal compression, it was found that the test specimens were mainly fissured by the block/mortar joint interfaces, following the delineation of settlement and top joints. Originality/value There are no experimental results available in the literature for this type of bricks that can contribute to the development of numerical studies.

The analysis of soil compaction with chassis of a wide-span irrigation machine Valmont was determined. The sprinkler had 12 two-wheeled chassis (size of tyre 14.9'' &times; 24''). During the evaluation of soil compaction, we monitored the values of penetration resistance and soil moisture during the operation of the sprinkler. Considering the performance parameters of the pump, the sprinkler was only half of its length (300 m) in the technological operation. In this area, also field measurements were performed in 19 monitoring points spaced both in tracks and outside the chassis tracks. The analysis showed the impact of compression with sprinkler wheels. The correction of obtained results of penetration resistance was applied in connection with soil moisture (mass) values according to Act No. 220/2004 (Lhotsk&yacute; et al. 1985). The results of average resistance ranged from 1.2 to 3.26 MPa. The values of the max. resistance ranged from 2.3 to 5.35 MPa. The results indicated a shallow soil compaction; however, it is not devastating.

Germplasm of 153 flax (Linum usitatissimum) accessions from 24 countries held at Plant Gene Resources of Canada (PGRC) was evaluated for resistance to fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum), anthracnose (Colletotrichum lini) and pasmo (Septoria linicola). The screening was conducted at the All-Russian Flax Research Institute (VNIIL) at Torzhok, Russia, over 3 years for fusarium wilt and anthracnose, and over 2 years for pasmo. A disease severity index ranging from 0% (no infection) to 100% (heavy infection) was calculated based on observations after artificial inoculation with the pathogens in the greenhouse (fusarium wilt) or in field nurseries (anthracnose and pasmo). The average disease severity index for fusarium wilt was 56.6 ± 34.4% (range 0–100.0%), for anthracnose 59.8 ± 8.1% (range 43.8–83.9%) and for pasmo 74.2 ± 11.8% (range 27.3–100.0%). The variation of disease severity indices among the years and within each accession was highest for fusarium wilt. Higher than average resistance for all three diseases was found in accessions from East Asia, while germplasm from the Indian subcontinent showed considerably lower than average resistance. Germplasm from North America and South America (mostly linseed) displayed above average resistance to fusarium wilt, while European accessions (mostly fibre flax) showed lower than average resistance to this disease. The different resistance levels reflected the improvements made by plant breeding and differences in the environments under which the germplasm accessions evolved. Accessions with potential use in linseed and fibre flax breeding were identified.
