Five-minute exposure of radish plants to far-red radiation at the end of each day after the development of the first two leaves significantly increased plant height, leaf length and width, root length, fresh weight of leaves, and reduced the chlorophyll content of leaves.

This study aims to determine the differences in the growth response of green curly lettuce to the differentiation treatment of LED lighting with different spectrum in indoor hydroponics. The research was conducted from October to November 2017. The experimental design used was experimental with 1 lighting factor with 5 levels, there are sunlight (P0), LED 20% blue: 80% red (P1), LED 80% blue: 20% red (P2), 50% blue LED: 50 % red (P3), and 100% white daylight (P4). Observational variables included plant height, leaf number, leaf area, leaf color, total wet weight, leaf wet weight, wet root weight and dry weight of the plant. The result of this experiment showed that LED irradiation have affect the treatment are plant height, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll content, fresh weight of harvest, root length, and dry weight of brackets. While those that have no significant effect are the wet weight of the roots. The results showed that between LED irradiation treatment L1, L2, L3, and L4 showed that treatment L2 with 80% blue spectrum composition: 20% red showed better growth based on: high plant, chlorophyll content, and root length. Treatment with L4 with white LED showed better growth based on the number of leaves, leaf area, fresh weight of harvest, root wet weight, and dry weight of total biomass. The results below the sunlight better than the LED irradiation treatment, because the intensity of LED far low and lack of controlled environmental conditions technology and management for growing lettuce. In all of LED treatment still looked etiolation because light intensity was not optimal yet.

The effects of the cereal cyst nematode Heterodera arenae and the fungus Rhizoctonin solani on the growth of wheat seedlings were examined under glasshouse conditions. In combination, the pathogens caused significantly greater reduction in tillering, plant height, fresh weight, and root number and length than that caused by either pathogen when acting alone. Reduction in plant height, root number, and root length were the result of interaction. Nematode-fungus interaction may be the cause of disease in the field usually attributed to only one of these pathogens.

We investigated the effect of paclobutrazol as preplant bulb soaks on plant heightof Iris x hollandica cv. ‘Frans Hals’ and ‘Blue Magic’cultivars which were grownin pots. Bulbs of iris were soaked into gibberellin inhibitor paclobutrazol solutionat 0, 15, 30 ppm before planting. Effect of paclobutrazol on the flowering time,flower diameter and length, leaf length, plant height, flower life, and chlorophyllcontent of leaves were determined. The shortest plant height was obtained from the‘Blue Magic’ cultivar treated with 30 ppm paclobutrazol which gave plants with11.3 cm, 68% shorter than untreated control. ‘Frans Hals’ cultivar treated with 30ppm paclobutrazol was 20.9 cm and 50% shorter than control. In ‘Blue Magic’ and‘Frans Hals’cultivars the lower dose of 15 ppm paclobutrazol were also effectiveon height control with 11.8 and 21.5 cm plant height, respectively. This gibberellininhibitor also shortened the leaf length of iris cultivars. Paclobutrazol treatmentsresulted in higher chlorophyll content per unit area in the leaves. The highestchlorophyll content (57.00 CCI) was obtained from the ‘Blue Magic’ iris treatedwith 30 ppm paclobutrazol, while the control plants had 32.70 CCI chlorophyll intheir leaves. Chlorophyll content of ‘Frans Hals’ treated with 30 ppm paclobutrazolwere 52.87 CCI, while control plants of this cultivar were 28.80 CCI. Plantsapplied with paclobutrazol resulted with smaller flower diameter compared to thecontrol plants of both cultivars. The smallest flower diameter was obtained from 30ppm paclobutrazol treatment with 38.83 mm in ‘Blue Magic’ iris while the controlof this cultivar was 99.63 mm. The flower diameter of ‘Frans Hals’ cultivar treatedwith 30 ppm paclobutrazol was 109.1 mm, while the control one was 112 mm.

Shoot length, leaf length and width, root length, and crown diameter were affected by 0.0-, 0.5-, 1.0-, and 5.0-mg·liter–1 uniconazole drench and 25- or 50-mg·liter–1 GA3 spray but not significantly by 0.0%, 2.5%, and 5.0% NaCl. Leaf width of H. syriacus Sieb. & Zucc. was not affected and that of H. syriacus L. significantly decreased, as NaCl concentration increased. Effect of NaCl on H. syriacus leaf width was offset by treatment with uniconazole but not by GA3 treatment. With 2.5% NaCl, dry weight of H. hamabo treated with uniconazole or GA3 increased and that of treated H. syriacus decreased. With 5.0% NaCl, dry weight of both species decreased with uniconazole or GA3. Calcium at 13.35 or 133.5 mM decreased the reduction of dry weight by NaCl treatment. The dry: fresh weight ratio of H. hamabo and H. syriacus treated with NaCl plus uniconazole was higher than that only treated with NaCl. GA3 treatment with NaCl did not affect the dry: fresh weight ratio for either species

Tuberose (Polianthes tuberosa L.) is one of the most important tropical bulbous-ornamental cultivated for production of long-lasting flowers spikes. Adaptation and acclimatization of different cultivars under humid agro-climatic conditions of Goa are to be confirmed for their better performance. The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the performance of tuberose cultivars under agro-climatic conditions of Goa during 2014- 2017. Five single and six double cultivars of tuberose were evaluated during the study period. All the cultivars differed in their growth and flowering behaviour. Among the single cultivars, evaluated, maximum number of florets per spike (47.00) was observed in Pune local whereas spike-length (75.59 cm) was maximum in Mexican Single. Among the double cultivars, evaluated, maximum plant height (52.21 cm) and maximum number of leaves per plant (59.63) were recorded with cultivar Arka Suvasini. Leaf length was significantly higher (52.93 cm) in Pearl double whereas leaf width (2.04 cm) was maximum in Calcutta Double. Days to appearance of flower spike were earlier in Arka Suvasini. Minimum days taken for opening of basal floret (84.88 days) were recorded with cultivar Arka Suvasini. Spike girth (0.68 cm), Spike fresh-weight (69.06 cm), floret stalk-length (3.6 cm), floret diameter (5.24 cm), weight of individual floret (3.49 g) and vase life (7.93 days) was significantly maximum in Cv. Arka Suvasini followed by Pearl Double. Based on the performance evaluation cv. Mexican Single among single types and cv. Arka Suvasini and Pearl Double among double types could be recommended for commercial cultivation under agro climatic conditions of Goa.

Abstract. Laisina JKJ, Maharijaya A, Sobir, Purwito A. 2021. Drought adaptive prediction in potato (Solanum tuberosum) using in vitro and in vivo approaches. Biodiversitas 22: 537-545. Prediction of drought adaptive potatoes requires selection indicators. This study aimed to determine in vitro selection indicators for obtaining drought adaptive potato genotypes in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro study was performed using single-node explants from seven genotypes cultured for six weeks on MS medium added with 0.2 M sorbitol to achieve the research aims. The cultures were partially observed and followed by watering the in vitro tubing medium. For the in vivo study, drought stress was applied for 21 days when the plants reached 25 days after planting (DAP) and for 14 days when the plants reached 50 DAP, then plants were irrigated again until harvesting. The results showed that plant height and root length can be used as selection indicators because they had a relative decrease below 50%, a close relationship and had the same variance with the in vitro number of tubers, in vitro tuber fresh weight and in vivo tuber fresh weight in drought stress at 25 DAP. These characters were determinant characters for the clustering pattern in the heat map cluster analysis. Based on these characters, SSI analysis was also performed and it was found that the PKHT4 was more adaptive than the PKHT6 in vitro, but the two genotypes were classified in the medium adaptive in vivo. In conclusion, plant height and root length were determined as the in vitro selection indicators in predicting drought adaptive genotypes in vivo at the plant age of 25 DAP.

In this study, two accessions of Bambara groundnut were exposed to fast neutrons Americium-Beryllium (AmBe) source with flux of 1.5 ×104 ncm-2 s-1for different hours, and planted in a completely randomized block design (RCBD) with three replications to raise M1 generation. The data recorded were percentage germination, plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, days to 50% flowering, number of pods per plant, fresh weight of plants, dry weight of plants, dry weight of pods, weight of seeds and100 seeds weight. There was variation in plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, Days to 50% flowering, fresh weight of plants, dry weight of plants, dry weight of pods, weight of seeds and100 seeds weight for Black accession. In the Cream accession, days to 50% flowering, number of pods per plant, fresh weight of plants, dry weight of plants, dry weight of pods, weight of seeds and100 seeds weight were significantly different. Treatment at 16 hours performed best for plant height, leaf length, number of leaves, weight of seed per plant and 100 seed weight in Black accession while Cream performed best at 8 hours exposure time. Fast neutron was observed to improve the performance of Bambara groundnut, thus can be used in breeding programme for Bambara groundnut.

Powdery mildew, caused by Podosphaera xanthii (syn. Sphaerotheca fuliginea auct. p.p.), is a serious and frequently occurring disease of cucurbits worldwide. Efficacy of four microbial products (i.e., Actinovate AG, Companion, BU EXP 1216C, and BU EXP 1216S), which contain microbes as the active ingredient, were evaluated on summer squash and cantaloupe against powdery mildew when applied alone or in alternation with a half-rate of conventional fungicide under greenhouse and field conditions. In greenhouse experiments, the product BU EXP 1216S significantly (P < 0.05) reduced the disease severity by nearly 70% relative to the water control. The level of control achieved was not significantly different from that obtained with Procure 480SC (triflumizole), the half-rate of conventional fungicide treatment, in two of four greenhouse experiments. Compared with the untreated water control, BU EXP 1216C and BU EXP 1216S, when applied alternately with Procure 480SC, consistently promoted plant growth measured by plant height, stem caliper, total fresh weight, and chlorophyll content in the leaves. The degree of increase was 11.6 and 11.3% in plant height, 15.6 and 19.8% in stem caliper, 25 and 40.7% in chlorophyll content, and 164 and 250% in total fresh weight, respectively. Alternating applications of these products with Procure 480SC resulted in significantly less powdery mildew disease than in the water control. In the first field trial on summer squash, all products applied individually or in alternation with Procure 480SC significantly reduced the severity of powdery mildew at the early stage (60 days after planting [DAP]) of disease development. Moreover, these alternating treatments resulted in significantly better control than with Procure 480SC alone at the late assessment stage (88 DAP). The products in alternation with Procure 480SC had a level of disease reduction equivalent to Procure 480SC alone on cantaloupe and significantly reduced disease severity in comparison with the water control. Compared with applying the microbial products alone, alternating applications of these products with Procure 480SC significantly reduced disease severity on cantaloupe and improved the marketable fruit number and weight. The data from our studies suggest that these microbial products could be effectively incorporated into disease management programs. In particular, these microbial products could be integrated into the management of powdery mildew on summer squash and cantaloupe in Florida by alternating their application with low rates of conventional fungicides, potentially reducing the development of fungicide resistance in the pathogen population.

Abstract This study investigated the growth after application of VP3 biofertilizer and its essential ingredients (vermiwash and vermicompost) and the effect of their pathogenicity on the germination of soybeans, green beans, long beans, kale, mustard greens, and green spinach. Research design was observed on plant height, root length, fresh weight, and signs of pathogenicity. The VP3 biofertilizer inoculation gave better results than other treatments on the high germination and fresh weight. However, in water spinach plants, the application of VP3 biofertilizer had a significant effect only on the height parameters of the seeds. Provision of VP3 biofertilizer and each of its carriers did not show any signs of pathogenicity such as necrosis, wilting, root rot, or stem rot. This finding indicates that VP3 biofertilizer is potential as a seed treatment and is also known to contain soil-borne disease controlling agent bacteria.

Substrate composition and container size are considered crucial for apple rootstock grown in a plug seedling system. This study investigated the effect of substrate material’s proportion and different container volumes on the growth of apple rootstock (M-9) plants propagated by tissue culture. In substrate composition, three different ratios of peat moss (PM): vermiculite (VL): perlite (PL) at 1:1:1 (S1), 1:2:3 (S2), 3:1:2 (S3) were used. For container size, plants were grown in 1000 mL (C1), 500 mL (C2), and 300 mL (C3) containers filled by 1:1:1 mixture of PM, VL and PL. In both cases, plants were treated eleven weeks in a green house. Our results demonstrate that the plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, shoot fresh weight and root fresh weight of apple rootstock were significantly higher in substrate composition S3 compared with S1 composition. However, chlorophyll content (SPAD) and photosynthesis rate were unaffected by variation of substrate composition. Furthermore, rootstock grown in C1 container showed plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, number of nodes, root length, shoot and root’s fresh and dry weight were significantly higher than those grown in C2 and C3 volume containers. The chlorophyll content and transpiration rate were not significantly affected by the different container volumes. These results suggest that the substrate ratio 3:1:2 of PM:VL:PL and container size 1000 mL were more favorable than other treatments for initial growth and development of the tissue culture propagated apple rootstock plants.
