Ontogenesis, histochemistry, and seasonal and luminous environmental characterization of secretory cavities in leaves of Myrcia splendens (Myrtaceae)

Secretory cavities produce compounds that protect plants from herbivory and pathogenic microorganisms. These cavities have been reported in many genera. However, there are few studies on secretory cavity ontogeny in the genus Myrcia (Myrtaceae) as well as the effects of luminosity and seasonality on such secretory cavities. Therefore, the objective of this study was to provide new information regarding the ontogenesis, structure, histochemistry, and effects of seasonality in Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC. We collected and analyzed leaves from 10 specimens of M. splendens exposed to sun and shade during both the wet and dry seasons. The samples were subjected to standard anatomical techniques for light microscopy. Myrcia splendens has schizo-lysigenous ontogenesis with exudates composed of lipids, essential oils, oil-resins, and alkaloids. The largest secretory cavities were found in leaves exposed to sunlight during the dry season. The presence of lipophilic compounds may be an important strategy for protecting the plant from herbivores. The seasonal variations observed in the leaf’s secretory cavities demonstrate the anatomical plasticity of such species to the availability of light and water. As the total area of the leaf cavities in M. splendens reflects the seasonal variation, this should be taken into account when aiming to grow crops for producing essential oils or for alkaloid extractions.

Smoke-drying Clarias gariepinus (catfish) provides animal protein and a source of livelihood in Lagos, Nigeria. Changes occurring to seasonal and mineral compositions of smoke-dried catfish using local Traditional Drum Kiln (TDK) and a newly constructed Eco-Friendly Kiln (EFK) fitted with a flame, drying and electronic components was carried out in this study. The smoke-drying process was carried out in both wet and dry seasons and smoke-dried catfish samples stored at ambient and adjusted refrigerated temperatures of 28 and 4 0C. The smoke-drying procedure was  standardized at 60 - 80 0C and kiln lasted 24 ± 3 hours. Moisture content results showed a significant difference when the catfish samples were smoke-dried using TDK and EFK and stored in ambient and controlled temperatures in both wet and dry seasons while crude protein, lipid, ash and crude fibre values were significantly different when stored only in dry season. Mineral elements phosphorus, sodium, copper, magnesium and iron showed a significant difference when stored at both temperatures and seasons using both kilns. Mineral elements were found to be most stable in smoke-dried catfish samples when stored at controlled temperatures. This work proved that standardizing smoke-drying process using both kilns resulted in good quality smoke-dried catfish but showed that higher biochemical values were obtained when EFK is used. Four essential oils isolated from dried leaves of parsley, lovage, basil, and thyme were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy. FTIR spectra revealed characteristic key bands for the main compounds of tested essential oils.

AbstractAtom size differences induce static displacements from an average alloy lattice and play an important role in controlling alloy phase stability and properties. The details of this role however, are difficult to study; chemical order and displacements are strongly interrelated and static displacements are hard to measure. Diffuse x-ray scattering measurements with tunable-synchrotron radiation can now measure element-specific static displacements with an accuracy of ± 0.1 pm and can simultaneously measure local chemical order out to 20 shells or more. Ideal alloys for diffuse scattering analysis with synchrotron radiation, are those that have previously been the most intractable: alloys with small Z contrast, alloys with only local order and alloys with small size differences. The combination of precise characterization of local chemical order and precise measurement of static displacement provides new information that challenges existing alloy models. We report on an ongoing systematic study of static displacements in the Fe/Ni/Cr alloys and compare the observed static displacements to the static displacements predicted by current theories. The availability of more brilliant 3rd generation hard x-ray sources will greatly enhance these measurements.
