Long-term behavior of expansive concrete drilled shafts

The research reported here is a continuation of work reported earlier in which it was concluded that the use of expansive cement concrete increased the side resistance of drilled shafts (bored piles) in stiff clay by as much as 50% over that in normal concrete shafts and reduced the settlement by about 50%. The conclusions were based on tests conducted at a concrete age of about 2 months. A year and a half later, the three shafts (one made with normal concrete and two made with expansive concrete) were tested again and the same comparatively better behavior of expansive concrete shafts was observed. The base capacities of all the shafts increased over this period owing to the consolidation of soil caused by residual base stresses following the initial tests. The shafts were later extracted for visual observation and coring. The compression tests on concrete cores obtained from various depths along the shafts indicated that expansive concrete behaves as a sound structural material in the long term. The gains in strength and stiffness of expansive concrete over normal concrete over a period of 2 years were found to be significant. A hypothesis is presented in this paper that states that expansive cement concrete produces a stronger bond between the concrete in a drilled shaft (bored pile) and the surrounding soil than does normal cement; this results in an increase in the frictional component of capacity and a reduction in the settlement of the shaft at working load levels.Four types of expansive cement, type "K" cement (the expansive cement available commercially) and three made from commercially available materials, were tested for their expansion characteristics; two of them were selected to be used in two instrumented drilled shafts in stiff clay. Normal (type 1) cement was used in a third shaft to serve as a reference. The three shafts were tested to failure after essentially all the expansion was deemed to have taken place in the two expansive concrete shafts. Lateral and longitudinal expansion of the shafts were monitored during the curing period. Load–settlement behaviour and load transfer between shafts and soil during the tests were studied.The test results permitted the preliminary conclusion that expansive cement concrete can increase the frictional capacity of drilled shafts in stiff clay by as much as 50% and reduce the settlement by about 50%. The results are valid for short-term behaviour of drilled shafts made of expansive cement. The long-term behaviour of such shafts remains to be studied. Based on the research results, coefficients in constitutive equations, describing the kinetics of dynamic, meta-dynamic, and static recrystallization in high-carbon bainitic steel during hot deformation were determined. The developed mathematical model takes into account the dependence of the changing kinetics in the structural size of the preliminary austenite grains, the value of strain, strain rate, temperature, and time. Physical simulations were carried out on rectangular specimens. Compression tests with a flat state of deformation were carried out using a Gleeble 3800. Based on dilatometric studies, coefficients were determined in constitutive equations, describing the grain growth of the austenite of high-carbon bainite steel under isothermal annealing conditions. The aim of the research was to verify the developed mathematical models in semi-industrial conditions during the hot-rolling process of high-carbon bainite steel. Analysis of the semi-industrial studies of the hot-rolling and long-term annealing process confirmed the correctness of the predicted mathematical models describing the microstructure evolution.

In order to predict the long term behavior of nonlinear dynamical systems the generalized cell mapping is an efficient and powerful method for numerical analysis. For this reason it is of interest to know under what circumstances dynamical quantities of the generalized cell mapping (like persistent groups, stationary densities, …) reflect the dynamics of the system (attractors, invariant measures, …). In this article we develop such connections between the generalized cell mapping theory and the theory of nonlinear dynamical systems. We prove that the generalized cell mapping is a discretization of the Frobenius–Perron operator. By applying the results obtained for the Frobenius–Perron operator to the generalized cell mapping we outline for some classes of transformations that the stationary densities of the generalized cell mapping converges to an invariant measure of the system. Furthermore, we discuss what kind of measures and attractors can be approximated by this method.

This paper is devoted to the long-term behavior of nonautonomous random lattice dynamical systems with nonlinear diffusion terms. The nonlinear drift and diffusion terms are not expected to be Lipschitz continuous but satisfy the continuity and growth conditions. We first prove the existence of solutions, and establish the existence of a multi-valued nonautonomous cocycle. We then show the existence and uniqueness of pullback attractors parameterized by sample parameters. Finally, we establish the measurability of this pullback attractor by the method based on the weak upper semicontinuity of the solutions.

Most hosts harbor multiple pathogens at the same time in disease epidemiology. Multiple pathogens have the potential for interaction resulting in negative impacts on host fitness or alterations in pathogen transmission dynamics. In this paper we develop a mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV-malaria coinfection. Additionally, we extended our model to examine the role treatment (of malaria and HIV) plays in altering populations’ dynamics. Our model consists of 13 interlinked equations which allow us to explore multiple aspects of HIV-malaria transmission and treatment. We perform qualitative analysis of the model that includes positivity and boundedness of solutions. Furthermore, we evaluate the reproductive numbers corresponding to the submodels and investigate the long term behavior of the submodels. We also consider the qualitative dynamics of the full model. Sensitivity analysis is done to determine the impact of some chosen parameters on the dynamics of malaria. Finally, numerical simulations illustrate the potential impact of the treatment scenarios and confirm our analytical results.

ABSTRACT The purpose of study was to assess long-term clinical and radiographic aspects of dogs’ stifle joints which had undergone a modified tibial tuberosity advancement technique (mTTA). A total of 15 stifles that had undergone mTTA for CCL disease of 11 patients were included in this study. Assessments involved patient’s gait analysis, cranial drawer and tibial compression tests, stifle goniometry range of articular motion, thigh and leg girth and radiographic evidence of progression of osteoarthrosis. Variables were compared between operated and healthy limbs and among moments (M0) on the early postop; (M1) 120 days postop; and (M2) approximately 5 years following surgery. A questionnaire regarding owner’s perceptions after approximately 5 years of surgery was assessed. Most dogs presented positive response to cranial drawer and tibial compression tests on operated knees. There was also decrease on goniometry and thigh girth and increase in leg girth. Radiographic evidence of progression of osteoarthritis was seen especially on the long-term follow-up (M2). On gait analysis, most animals presented some degree of lameness in different conditions, in contrast to owners’ perceptions. Osteoarthritis still develops in dogs following mTTA surgery for CCL disease. However, owners were overall satisfied with their recovery and would be willing to accept indication of mTTA for dogs with ruptured CCL.
