Program CANDSN was developed at The University of Calgary for designing, adjusting and analyzing horizontal survey networks. The concepts and mathematics that this program is based upon are discussed in this paper. The role of interactive computer graphics as an effective technique for the entry and editing of data and the presentation of results is discussed. Experience with examples from the fields of geodesy, engineering surveying, and cadastral surveying have demonstrated the effectiveness of this program as an educational, research and working tool.

The application of constructive geometric modeling to pedagogical models of teaching graphic disciplines today is a promising direction for using computer technology in the educational process of educational institutions. The essence of the method of constructive geometric modeling is to represent any operation performed on geometric objects in the form of a transformation, as a result of which some constructive connection is established, and the transformation itself can be considered as a result of the action of an abstract cybernetic device. Constructive geometric modeling is a popular information tool for information processing in various applied areas, however, this tool cannot be appreciated without the presence of appropriate software systems and developed design techniques. Traditionally, constructive geometric modeling is used in the design of mechanical engineering, energy, aircraft and shipbuilding facilities, in architectural and design engineering. The need to study descriptive geometry at the university in recent years has something in common with the issues of mastering graphic packages of computer programs in the framework of the new discipline "Engineering and Computer Graphics". The well-known KOMPAS software product is considered the simplest and most attractive for training. It should be noted the important role of graphic packages in the teaching of geometric disciplines that require a figurative perception of the material by students. Against the background of a reduction in classroom hours, computer graphics packages are practically the only productive teaching methodology, successfully replacing traditional tools - chalk and blackboard.

The surveying engineering program at The University of Calgary, as of September 1981, has been in operation for two years. It is now fully operational, and successful by any measure. Cadastral studies area courses and other closely related courses form an important component of the program. These courses are described and discussed. The role of the Western Canadian Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors and its relationship to the surveying engineering program at The University of Calgary is also outlined.

A survey was carried out of the information landscape within the students of Computer Science, Biology and Mathematics in the University of Swaziland which examined the research problems, important sources of information, the methods of access, information needs and seeking behavior of the users their assessment and the role of the Libraries since Librarian have to identify the information needs, uses and problems faced to meet the needs and requirement of the user. A total of 200 questionnaire were distributed. The survey indicated that majority of the students believe that the online resources play a very important role for their research and show positive attitude toward future bioinformatics usage and training. The study concluded that the training preferences of students need to be further explored.

Alfred Tarski started contributing to set theory at a time when the Zermelo-Fraenkel axiom system was not yet fully formulated and as simple a concept as that of the inaccessible cardinal was not yet fully defined. At the end of Tarski's career the basic concepts of the three major areas and tools of modern axiomatic set theory, namely constructibility, large cardinals and forcing, were already clearly defined and were in the midst of a rapid successful development. The role of Tarski in this development was somewhat similar to the role of Moses showing his people the way to the Promised Land and leading them along the way, while the actual entry of the Promised Land was done mostly by the next generation. The theory of large cardinals was started mostly by Tarski, and developed mostly by his school. The mathematical logicians of Tarski's school contributed much to the development of forcing, after its discovery by Paul Cohen, and to a lesser extent also to the development of the theory of constructibility, discovered by Kurt Gödel. As in other areas of logic and mathematics Tarski's contribution to set theory cannot be measured by his own results only; Tarski was a source of energy and inspiration to his pupils and collaborators, of which I was fortunate to be one, always confronting them with new problems and pushing them to gain new ground.Tarski's interest in set theory was probably aroused by the general emphasis on set theory in Poland after the First World War, and by the influence of Wactaw Sierpinski, who was one of Tarski's teachers at the University of Warsaw. The very first paper published by Tarski, [21], was a paper in set theory.

With the continued climate crisis, there is increasing recognition for the important of sustainabilityeducation in engineering. At the University of Calgary, we are developing a program in Sustainable Systems Engineering to address this need. Systems thinking and sustainability are intrinsically linked, as in order to comprehend the wicked challenges of sustainability today, we must take a holistic, interconnected, systems approach. This paper outlines sustainability education literature, and our approach to program development. Overall, we hope to foster mindsets and develop engineering students who are able to fundamentally shift the discourse on sustainability engineering within industry, and critically reflect on the role of engineering itself.

Over 30 years ago a cry rang out through the proverbial halls of academia; “The clinician scientist is an endangered species.” These prophetic words have been reverberated in the ears of every specialty and every general medical organization in deafening tones. Why is the role of the clinician scientist or clinician investigator so important that this phrase has been repeated subsequently in medical and educational journals? Simply put, the clinician scientist bridges the ravine between the ever-growing mountain of scientific knowledge and the demanding patient centered clinical care. Here, we describe the current educational model established by the University of Calgary, Leaders in Medicine Program. Our program seeks to train future physicians and clinician scientists by incorporating training in basic science, translational and clinical research with clinical and medical education in a longitudinal program to students of traditional MD/PhD, MD/MSc or MD/MBA stream as well as interested Doctor of Medicine students.

This study illustrates the role of practicing anthropologists who seek to promote critical educational reform based on anthropological theory and ethnographic research. The analytic context is PRISM (Partnerships for Reform in Science and Mathematics), an initiative designed to improve the scientific and mathematical literacy of K-16 students in the state of Georgia. The unit of analysis is "Strategy 10," a dimension of PRISM also referred to as "The Reward Structure Committee," of which I am a member. The Committee's charge was to construct a new policy and reward structure that would advocate for and reward science and math faculty in the University System of Georgia (USG), whose work improves primary and secondary education in their respective disciplines.
