Common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) eggs incubated at 16 °C were plunged into melting ice (0.3 °C) during the first cleavage stages with the aim of determining their sensitivity to cold shock. The effects of the shocks were estimated by the survival rates of embryos on days 2 and 6 of prehatching. After a brief cold shock (10 min), embryos showed a regular succession of sensitive and tolerant phases. Survival rates indicated that there were 9 sensitive phases at the caudal bug stage and 12 at the prehatching stage. This rhythm corresponded to the periodicity of cell division in the rapid cleavage stage. The embryos became progressively more tolerant to cold shock. With an increase in the duration of the cold shock (50 min), an assymetrical widening of the mortality peaks was observed. The progressive acquisition of tolerance to cold shock in carp embryos might be related to a desynchronisation and a slowing down of the cell cycles during the early cleavage stages.

Incorporation of uridine in cleavage stage eggs of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus was investigated. It was shown by ion exchange and thin layer chromatography that most of the uridine taken up during the 16-cell stage was converted into UTP with some incorporation into UDP and UMP. Conversion of uridine to these phosphorylated nucleosides occurred throughout early cleavage stages. A very small amount of uridine taken up by cleavage stage eggs is incorporated into RNA heterogeneous in size. This RNA was examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

This paper deals with the performance of orangefin labeo, Labeo calbasu (Hamilton, 1822) as a component of conventional composite carp culture system. The species was included as 50% substitution to common carp (Cyprinus carpio) in view of its omnivorous feeding habit and bottom dwelling nature. The total production was 0.55% higher in the experimental culture (with L. calbasu and Cyprinus carpio) than in the control (common carp only). The difference in the production was however not significant statistically. The comparative economics revealed 5.30% higher return from the experimental unit. Comparison of growth pattern and survival rates of other five species of carps indicated that inclusion of L. calbasu did not have any adverse impact on the other carps. Growth rate of other carps was observed to be higher in the experimental set by 0.05% on an average than the control. Calculated profit per hectare was found to be 9.2% higher in experimental plot than in the control. Although the gross production and return in the experimental unit was not significantly higher than the control, the data supported that L. calbasu is compatible to other component species in composite carp culture system and its inclusion will enhance the economic viability of the system.

This research aims to investigate the influence of Ketapang (Terminalia catappa) bark extract (KBE) on the survival rate and liver histopathology of Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) which was Infected by Aeromonas hydrophilia. Experimental design with Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Obtained data were analyzed by using Analysis of Varian (ANOVA) and further Least Significant Differed (LSD) analysis. The main parameters in this research are the damage level of Common carp liver based on scoring value and survival rates. Based on the result from scoring data, it was shown that there is altered-histology on Common carp fish liver. The damages found were congestion, melanomacrofag, and necrosis. In average, treatment A (730 ppm) had the highest damage average while treatment C (770 ppm) had the lowest damage average value. The final result shows that the bigger the dose, the lower the damage. In contrast, the survival rates would decrease with the higher dose of KBE. It can be concluded that KBE able to reduce the liver alteration however in some extend it will cause the mortality.Keywords : common carp, histopathology, ketapang, liver, survival rate.

The resistance of common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) eggs to hot and cold shock has been studied by measuring the survival rate during the course of an incubation at a constant temperature of 20 °C. When incubation was pursued in oxygen-saturated conditions, a 1-h-long thermal shock which occurred during the synchronous segmentation stage had no effect within the temperature range of 8–28 °C. At gastrula stage, this interval reached 0.3 °C and at the end of epiboly it reached 36 °C. With hypoxic incubation conditions, a 1-h postepibolic shock had no effect within the range of 1–36 °C. On the contrary, a 12 °C (or less) preblastulean cold shock or a 30 °C (or more) pregastrulean hot shock induced a significant loss of further resistance to hypoxy. An overoxygenation during the shock did not increase the embryonic resistance. During the synchronous segmentation, the sensitivity to cold shock varied occasionally, possibly in relation with the mitotic cycle. Sensitivity to thermal shock also depended on the gametes' fertility. The resistance to thermic shock was compared with the thermic profiles that are described to be optimum in laboratory conditions at constant temperature, or in natural conditions of development. Hypoxy or hyperoxy cannot be the determining factor in thermic-shock effects on carp eggs: several hypotheses were reviewed to explain the acquisition of an increasing resistance to the variation of the environmental temperature.
