Island biogeography of vertebrates in Georgian Bay Islands National Park

Terrestrial vertebrates on 28 of 77 islands in Georgian Bay Islands National Park were examined by taxon (i.e., nonvolant mammals, herptiles, and birds) to determine whether the number of species on each island was affected by variation in dispersal capability and susceptibility to extinction, as predicted by the equilibrium theory of island biogeography. About 70% of the variation in number of species on islands was accounted for by the area of the islands. Species (S) – area (A) relationships (S = cAz) for birds, herptiles, and nonvolant mammals all differed significantly in slope and intercept (P < 0.05). Intertaxa comparisons revealed that birds exhibited the greatest numbers of species on all sizes of islands and smallest slope (z = 0.32); herptiles exhibited intermediate numbers of species on all sizes of islands and intermediate slope (z = 0.37). Of all taxa, nonvolant mammals exhibited the lowest numbers of species on all sizes of islands and greatest slope (z = 0.42), consistent with the predictions of the theory. These results reinforce earlier suggestions that designs for nature reserves should accommodate intertaxa variation in dispersal ability and susceptibility to extinction.

76 species, 3 varieties and 1 form from 21 genera of Streptophyta, Conjugatophyceae (Actinotaenium, Bambusina, Closterium, Cosmarium, Cylindrocystis, Euastrum, Gonatozygon, Haplotaenium, Micrasterias, Mougeotia, Netrium, Penium, Planotaenium, Pleurotaenium, Raphidiastrum, Spirogyra, Spirotaenia, Staurastrum, Staurodesmus, Tetmemorus, Xanthidium) were found in the basins of the Valdai District area of the National Park «Valdaiskiy» (Novgorod Region, Russia). The list of species is annotated with data on the species distribution in 55 collecting sites of 29 water bodies of the national park, and species abundance in collected samples according to Luknitskaya (2009). Among above mentioned genera, the genus Cosmarium is represented by the greatest number of species (20). Staurastrum chaetoceros has been found for the first time for the Novgorod Region.

AbstractThe necessity of monitoring changes occurring in soil compels us to look for new methods that will allow easy and precise evaluation of the soil quality in a given area. One proposed method is the maturity index (MI) – an index that is based on the distribution of species along the r-to-K continuum in examined populations. In this study, mites from the suborder Uropodina (Acari: Mesostigmata) were examined for their appropriateness in MI-based assessments of soil quality. The first aim of the study was to establish the criteria on the basis of which the evaluation of the r-to-K reproductive strategies was conducted for Uropodina in the examined communities. The second aim was to evaluate the performance of the maturity index of communities of Uropodina as indicator of human-caused disturbance in five areas that are legally protected in Poland. The selected areas were: Białowieża Primeval Forest, Gorce National Park, and three nature reserves: Jakubowo, Las Grądowy nad Mogilnicą, and Cisy Staropolskie im. Leona Wyczółkowskiego. We found that as many as 68 out of the 96 analyzed Uropodina species in Poland are K-stategists. The highest values of the maturity index were recorded for the nature reserves Cisy Staropolskie im. Leona Wyczółkowskiego and the Białowieża Primeval Forest.

A check list of the spider species of the Karoo National Park collected over a period of 10 years is presented. Thirty-eight families, represented by 102 genera and 116 species have been collected. Of these species, 76 (66.4 ) were wanderers and 39 (33.6 ) web builders. The Araneidae have the highest number of species (14) followed by the Thomisidae (10) and the Gnaphosidae (8), while 14 families are represented by a single species. Information on spider guilds, their habitat preference and web types is provided. This study forms part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA).

This research was about Dipterocarpaceae inventory at Ketambe Research Station, Gunung Leuser National Park. The research was done on July 2015. Determination of sampling plot was using purposive sampling. The parameter observed was species as well as number of species. The result showed that there were 5 species of Dipterocarpaceae found in the sampling plot. All the species found were belongs to tribe of Shoreae namely; Shorea johorensis, Shorea parvifolia, Hopea dryobalanoides, Shorea lepidota, and Parashorea lucida.Key words: Dipterocarpaceae, inventory, Gunung Leuser National Park

Based on genetic, morphological and chromatical comparisons we evaluate the taxonomic status of two southern Vietnamese forest-dwelling populations of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis species complex. We confirm the allocation of the population from Binh Chau—Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve (Ba Ria—Vung Tau Province) to C. cattienensis and we describe the population of Nui Chua National Park (Ninh Thuan Province) as Cyrtodactylus sangi sp. nov. This brings to 18 the number of species within the C. irregularis complex and to 41 the number of described Cyrtodactylus species recorded from Vietnam.
