The present investigation on the status of Sandalwood (Santalum album Linn.) in low hills of Himachal Pradesh was carried out in the Department of Silviculture and Agroforestry in the laboratory at the main campus of the Dr. Y. S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan and in the field at Bilaspur and Jawala Mukhi varying in altitude from 500–850 m. The growth behavior of sandals was studied through the selection of 10 ha sampling plot at Bilaspur and 5 ha sampling plot at Jawala Mukhi based on tree density. The investigations revealed that the trees have covered an area of 15 ha at Bilaspur and 30 ha at Jawala Mukhi. The total number of trees growing at Bilaspur and Jawala Mukhi was found to be 1076 and 815, respectively. Further, average oil content was about 3.86 and 3.90% in the heartwood of S. album growing at Bilaspur and Jawala Mukhi. Phytosociological parameters of vegetation in sandal stand at Bilaspur revealed Santalum album as the dominant tree species with its maximum IVI value which corresponds to its higher frequency, basal area, and density.

Grona triflora (Desmodium triflorum), a perennial herbaceous legume, is widely distributed in southern China. G. triflora has antipyretic, antiseptic and expectorant properties and can therefore be used as a phytomedicine (Ghosal et al. 1973). In July 2020, roots of G. triflora were investigated for nodules and rhizobia collection at the Shibaluohan Mountain Forest Park of Guangzhou. Root galls induced by a root-knot nematode were observed on 90% of the G. triflora samples (in a 200 m2 plot) and the infested plants had yellow, small and withered leaves compared with the healthy ones. The galls number on a G. triflora root ranged from 43 to 92 and the population densities of second stage juveniles (J2s) ranged from 573 to 894 per 100 cm3 soil surrounding the plant. The female perineal patterns showed a low dorsal arch, with lateral field marked by forked and broken striae, no punctate markings between the anus and tail terminus, which matched with the description of Meloidogyne arenaria (Hartman and Sasser 1985). The J2s had the following morphometric characters (n = 15): body length = 501.05 ± 23.71 µm; body width = 17.14 ± 1.23 µm; DGO = 3.13 ± 0.27 µm; stylet length = 12.97 ± 1.38 µm; tail length = 58.02 ± 4.77 µm; hyaline tail terminus = 10.08 ± 0.65 µm. DNA from four female nematodes was isolated for PCR-based diagnostic analyses. A fragment between the COII and LrRNA genes of the mitochondrial DNA was amplified with primers C2F3/1108 (Powers and Harris 1993). In addition, a 28S ribosomal DNA D2/D3 region was amplified with primers MF/MR (Hu et al. 2011). The amplicons were sequenced (GenBank No. MW315989 and MW307358). Nucleotide BLAST results indicated that both sequences show 100% identity with corresponding M. arenaria sequences of isolates from various countries such as Brazil, China, Myanmar and Vietnam (e.g., MK033428, JQ446377, KY293688 and MK026624). For further confirmation, sequence characterized amplified region (SCAR) PCR was employed using the M. arenaria specific primers Far/Rar (Zijlstra et al. 2000). The amplicon was also sequenced (GenBank No. MW315990). The Nucleotide BLAST results showed >99% identity with M. arenaria isolates from Indonesia and Argentina (KP234264, KP253748 and MK015624). Greenhouse tests were conducted to analyze the capacity of M. arenaria to induce galls on G. triflora roots. The G. triflora seeds were collected from the sampling plot and germinated on 0.8% (W/V) agar plates. Then the seedlings were planted in 14 cm deep and 15 cm diam pots filled with sterilized soil from sampling plot. Every seedling was inoculated with 2,000 J2s (n = 15) and plants without J2s were used as a control. Two months later, galls were observed for inoculated roots while no galls were formed on roots of control plants. An average of 13,300 J2s and eggs of M. arenaria (reproduction factor = 6.65) were recovered from the root. Stanton and Rizo (1988) found that G. triflora was susceptible to M. javanica in Australia, and Ogbuji (1978) reported that a population of M. incognita reproduced on roots of G. triflora in Nigeria after artificial inoculation. To our knowledge, this is the first report on G. triflora parasitized by M. arenaria in Guangdong province. M. arenaria has potential to infest local, economically important plants like citrus, pomelo, sugarcane, maize and peanut. As G. triflora is widely distributed in southern China, there is the risk of spreading M. arenaria into agricultural and horticultural systems, that will cause yield loss and economic impacts.

The territory of the N.V. Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences is subjected to significant anthropogenic stress, which has a negative effect on the state of valuable collections of tree and shrub species. Soil compaction is one of the most dangerous consequences of anthropogenic impact, expressed in increased recreational impact. In this context, the botanical garden was very concerned about the deterioration of the collection of elaeagnus species. Therefore, the soils on which these plants grow were chosen as the object of research. On this territory, three sampling plots with different degrees of anthropogenic impact were laid. Sampling plot No. 1 had the maximum anthropogenic impact. The area of medium anthropogenic impact was represented by the sampling plot No. 2. The sampling plot No. 3 where the anthropogenic impact was minimal was a reference plot. All the studied soils were classified as soddy-slightly podzolic medium loamy soils (Umbric Albeluvisols Abruptic). Fundamental differences in the morphological properties of the studied soils were that the soils located in the area of maximum anthropogenic impact, starting from a depth of 40 cm, showed gley spots, which were not found in other soils. Increased bulk density of soil in undisturbed state corresponded to increased anthropogenic impact. This led to a decrease in total pore space of soil. Soil compaction contributed to a noticeable decrease in gravimetric soil water content in upper horizons. At the same time, worsening of subsurface runoff contributed to gley-forming processes in the illuvial part of the profile. Cluster analysis revealed good grouping of the dependence of the studied indicators on the severity of anthropogenic impact. The studied indicators were separated depending on their type and position in the profile. The conducted study made it possible to assess the essential physical and hydrophysical properties of soils on the part of the territory of the Main Botanical garden of RAS that is occupied by the valuable collection of elaeagnus. Based on the results of the study, a set of measures is proposed that can significantly reduce the identified negative effects and improve the state of both the studied soils and stands growing on them in general.

ABSTRACT: Mangrove ecosystems are ecosystems located in coastal areas that are affected by tides so that the bases are always flooded. Mangroves have ecological functions that can support the growth of organisms in them. The ecological functions include nursery ground, feeding ground, and spawing ground for organisms living in it, one of which is crustaceans. The Rembang coastal area is used by the surrounding community to change the function of mangrove vegetation land into a pond area so that it can affect the existence of crustaceans. This study aims to determine the structure of the crustacean community including composition, abundance, diversity, uniformity, dominance, and distribution patterns of mangrove vegetation in Tireman Village, Rembang District, Rembang Regency. The study was conducted in April - May 2019. The method of determining the location using purposive sampling. Sampling uses a qualitative method with a 5x5 meter sampling plot with three repetitions. The material used is crustacean community structure data and environmental parameters. The results obtained were found 10 types from 4 families originating from 2 infra-orders (Brachyura and Anomura). The highest abundance is found in Station B of 1.59 individuals / m2. Diversity individuex is low to moderate (H '= 0.98 - 1.28) and uniformity individuex is low (e = 0.21 - 0.27), and there is no dominance at each research station (C = 0.34 - 0.47). The type of distribution pattern that is found is clustered (clumped). ABSTRAK: Ekosistem mangrove merupakan ekosistem yang terdapat pada daerah tepi pantai yang dipengaruhi oleh pasang surut air laut sehingga dasarnya selalu tergenang air. The aim of this research is to evaluate the influence of wood ash as an additive fertilizer to forest soil and growing blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) in terms of metallic element content. To evaluate the effect of wood ash on the forest ecosystem, was selected two forest areas which was fertilized with a certain amount of wood ash (bottom ash and fly ash). The selected forest areas were divided into two types of sampling plots (fertilized with ash and control). Obtained results showed that in the bottom ash dispersion area the concentration of Ca, K, Ni, Cu is almost twice higher in the fertilized plots than control plots. In the blueberries, metallic element content is similar and does not depend on the type of sampling plot.

The study was conducted to explore natural regeneration potential of a community managed forest. Village Common Forest (VCF) has been managed as a commo n property resource under the leadership of Mouza Headmen based on traditional resource management pattern. Stratified random sampling method was carried out for the inventory of the regeneration status. The sampling plot size for regeneration was 5m × 5m. About 47 regenerating tree species belonging to 22 families were recorded from the studied village common forest where Grewia nervosa was the dominant regenerated seedlings. Euphorbiaceae was the dominant family with 7 species followed by Moraceae (5 species), Rubiaceae (4 species), Anacardiaceae (3 species), Combretaceae (3 species) and Mimosaceae (3 species). Maximum Importance Value Index (IVI) was found for Grewia nervosa (27.97) followed by Brownlowia elata (21.52), Artocarpus chama (14.74) and Leea macrophylla (12.53). A total of 78% of the regenerating tree species were regenerated from seeds and 22% from coppices. Shannon-Wiener’s Diversity Index was found 3.37 where Simpson’s Diversity Index was 0.055, Moreover, Margalef’s Richness Index was calculated as 8.57 and Species Evenness Index was 0.88. The results depict that the regeneration status of studied VCF has been satisfactory and Village Common Forest still contains dense forests that represents rich biodiversity including rare species. The study might be helpful for increasing conservation importance of this forest. This study suggests further study on vegetation structure and carbon pool assessment to understand more about of this forest for future sustainability.
