We review the role of R symmetries in models of supersymmetric unification in four and more dimensions, and in string theory. We show that, if one demands anomaly freedom and fermion masses, only R symmetries can forbid the supersymmetric Higgs mass term μ. We then review the proof that R symmetries are not available in conventional grand unified theories (GUTs) and argue that this prevents natural solutions to the doublet–triplet splitting problem in four dimensions. On the other hand, higher-dimensional GUTs do not suffer from this problem. We briefly comment on an explicit string-derived model in which the μ and dimension-5 proton decay problems are solved simultaneously by an order four discrete R symmetry. We also comment on the higher-dimensional origin of this symmetry.

We review the problem of neutrino masses and mixings in the context of grand unified theories. After a brief summary of the present experimental status of neutrino physics, we describe how the see-saw mechanism can automatically account for the large atmospheric mixing angle. We provide two specific examples where this possibility is realized by means of a flavor symmetry. We then review in some detail the various severe problems which plague minimal GUT models (like the doublet–triplet splitting and proton-decay) and which force us to investigate the possibility of constructing more elaborate but realistic models. We then show an example of a quasirealistic SUSY SU(5) model which, by exploiting the crucial presence of an Abelian flavor symmetry, does not require any fine-tuning and predicts a satisfactory phenomenology with respect to coupling unification, fermion masses and mixings and bounds from proton decay.

Research on social and environmental accounting (SEA) has mainly concentrated on disclosure of SEA by corporate bodies, where investigations on ones attitude towards SEA are rarely discussed. SEA is a medium that develops relationships between business and society, community and nature. In addition, SEA involves a concept of sustain ability; where natural resources need to be sustained for the needs of future generations (Alhabshi et al., 2003). SEA also tries to recognise the role of accounting in sustainable development and the use of environmental resources. There are arguments that the young generations today are not fully aware of preserving these natural resources as well as handling social and environmental issues wisely. This perhaps link closely to their belief and cultural background. Hence, this paper examines the influence of gender and belief factors on the undergraduate students’ attitude towards SEA. Four dimensions of belief (fixed ability, quick learning, simple knowledge and certain knowledge) proposed by Schommer (2005) were adapted to analyse how belief factors have influence on their attitude towards SEA. An independent sample t-test was used to examine the relationship between gender and students’ attitude towards SEA. Spearmen’s correlation was employed to show the relationship between belief and attitude towards SEA. The results revealed that gender differences did not show influences on their attitude towards SEA. It was found that there is a significant relationship between belief and students’ attitude towards SEA. Students who believe on the importance of SEA tend to report positive attitude towards SEA. Perhaps findings of this study may provide some information on the SEA education and further be incorporated in the syllabus.

Research in international marketing has long shown that foreign firms face disadvantages when operating abroad from a lack of familiarity with the local institutional environment. To cope with this familiarity, some companies have developed a culture in the ability to understand and take into account the institutional dimensions of the destination market. This article thus aims to explore the institutional orientation of firms and tests its impact on export performance. In Study 1, we develop and validate a 12-item measurement scale divided into four dimensions. In Study 2, we investigate the role of institutional orientation in export performance using a sample of 273 French and Tunisian exporting companies. The results show that this relationship is not direct but is mediated by export commitment.

We have investigated the α–T3 model in the presence of a mass term which opens a gap in the energy dispersive spectrum, as well as under a uniform perpendicular quantizing magnetic field. The gap opening mass term plays the role of Zeeman splitting at low magnetic fields for this pseudospin-1 system, and, as a consequence, we are able to compare physical properties of the the α–T3 model at low and high magnetic fields. Specifically, we explore the magnetoplasmon dispersion relation in these two extreme limits. Central to the calculation of these collective modes is the dielectric function which is determined by the polarizability of the system. This latter function is generated by transition energies between subband states, as well as the overlap of their wave functions.

Here I summarize some of the salient features of technicolor theories with technifermions in higher dimensional representations of the technicolor gauge group. The expected phase diagram as function of number of flavors and colors for the two index (anti)symmetric representation of the gauge group is reviewed. After having constructed the simplest walking technicolor theory one can show that it is not at odds with the precision measurements. The simplest theory also requires, for consistency, a fourth family of heavy leptons. The latter may result in an interesting signature at LHC. In the case of a fourth family of leptons with ordinary lepton hypercharge the new heavy neutrino can be a natural candidate of cold dark matter. New theories will also be proposed in which the critical number of flavors needed to enter the conformal window is higher than in the one with fermions in the two-index symmetric representation, but lower than in the walking technicolor theories with fermions only in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. Due to the near conformal/chiral phase transition the composite Higgs is very light compared to the intrinsic scale of the technicolor theory. For the two technicolor theory the composite Higgs mass is predicted not to exceed 150 GeV.

The reduced multireference (RMR) coupled-cluster (CC) method with singles and doubles (RMR CCSD) that employs a modest-size MR CISD wave function as an external source for the most important (primary) triples and quadruples in order to account for the nondynamic correlation effects in the presence of quasidegeneracy, and which is further perturbatively corrected for the remaining (secondary) triples, RMR CCSD(T), is employed to compute the molecular geometry and the energy of the lowest-lying singlet and triplet states, as well as the corresponding singlet–triplet splitting, for all possible isomers of the m, n-pyridyne diradicals. A comparison is made with earlier results that were obtained by other authors, and the role of the multireference effects for both the geometry and the spin multiplicity of the lowest state, as described by the RMR-type methods, is demonstrated on the example of 2,6- and 3,5-pyridynes.

Can the smart city provide a new perspective for public and academic libraries? How does the smart city impact the libraries as cultural and scientific assets? And how can libraries contribute to the development of the smart city? An overview of recent library models, like the learning center or the green library, reveals affinities with the concept of the smart city, especially regarding the central role of information and the integration of technology, people, and institutions. From this observation, the paper develops the outline of a new concept of the smart library, which can be described in four dimensions, i.e., smart services, smart people, smart place, and smart governance. However, the smart library concept does not constitute a unique model or project, but a process, a way of how to get things done, that is less linear, less structured, and more creative and innovative. Also, smartness may not be a solution for all library problems.

The research aims to demonstrate the role of the main variables represented by the four dimensions of entrepreneurial behavior (creative, risk taking, seizing opportunities, proactivity), and job engagement, whose dimensions are (cognitive engagement, emotional engagement, physical (physical) engagement) in Reducing the dependent variable of organizational anomie in the Qatina factory of the General Company for Textile and Leather Industries, one of the formations of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals The experimental analytical method was adopted in the completion of the research, and an intentional sample of (162) individuals in the administrative levels (higher and middle) in the factory was taken. The relationship of entrepreneurial behavior and job engagement at the total level was positive with organizational anomie, and indicators of organizational non-normative dimensions, organizational cynicism and lack of organizational values decreased, because the cotton factory members do not ignore work values to achieve their goals, as well as the existence of a spirit of cooperation and teamwork Factory workers.
