Research methodology An interview was conducted with the general manager and semi-structured interviews with Likert scale to the main clients, collaborators and suppliers to establish the key competencies of the firm. Secondary information was collected through the organization’s historical and strategic documents. Learning outcomes At the end of the case study, students will be able to learn international marketing, innovation, strategic management, international business strategy; analyze the brand equity construct through the associative neural network model for decision-making; determine the internationalization strategy using the dual pressures model and sources of competitive advantage for international marketing management; and propose the innovation of a product by applying creativity techniques or innovation models to enter international markets. Case overview/synopsis Café Galavis is a family business leader in the production and commercialization of roasted and ground coffee for 103 years in Colombia. The new chief executive officer recovered the financial stability during his management during the period from 2015 to 2019, implementing internationalization processes. However, the sanitary crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 in Colombia, generated an economic recession, which led to a decrease in coffee consumption. How to innovate in the development of a product or service in times of pandemic? What internationalization strategy implement? These are the challenges that the new management and its collaborators will confront. Complexity academic level The teaching case is aimed at students of postgraduate academic programs in areas Management or MBA. In the modules of Marketing the case allows the orientation of the concepts of brand equity or branding. Likewise, in the modules of International Management, the definition of the internationalization strategy through the analysis of dual pressures and sources of competitive advantage. Finally, in the modules of Innovation different methodologies or techniques for innovation can be applied such as: SCAMPER, Design thinking or the Stage Gate Model. The article seeks to provide insights on the current structural trends in international marketing. It is observed that in recent decades, marketing as a business concept has undergone internal qualitative changes which have been primarily underpinned by new technological advancements and globalization opportunities. The rapid pace of globalization has fuelled the emergence of a large number of new customers and new competitors in the global market, as well as spurred revolutionary changes in communication technology. In modern realia of intensified competition, marketing remains an exceptional tool to win and protect market share for most companies. Further on, the study explores the etymology of the word "trend" and substantiates its significance to business development perspectives along with providing the most popular trend classification groupings: by the generational theory and according to the Internet marketing concept. The findings reveal the key latest trends in various industries that have gained a positive response from consumers, thus verifying a growing interest in marketing trends. In addition, the study presents an overview of the latest trends that will help companies enhance their market position. It is argued that to be competitive, each company should monitor trends, follow trends and actively implement them in their marketing activities, especially in the international market. It is resumed that for these trends in international marketing to be effective, a special emphasis should be placed to targeted communication with consumers, in particular, marketing strategies should focus on the following principles: the need to adapt the content of messages and channels to the target audience demands by age groups and generations; narrow market segmentation – hyperpersonalization; creating interactive advertising content and format and using games; trend towards individuality, environmental friendliness and consumer involvement in the process of developing goods, products and services; flexibility in obtaining data; collaboration with international brands; active implementation of new functions on social platforms (such as Shops on Instagram / Facebook) in company marketing.

Market globalization has made multilingual marketing communications a sine qua none for most transnational businesses. Exploring new foreign markets has thus meant translating and localizing marketing communications, so as to enable foreign consumers to have the kind of experience that may spur them into being favorable to the products or services on promotion. Conscious of this imperative, many Nigerian companies have embarked on multilingual packaging as a key component of their international marketing strategies. Although such a language-based tactic has enormous potential, Nigerian companies' use of multilingual packaging is confronted to a multitude of problems. This chapter explores four of such problems, including mis-translations (of packages), partial translation, typographic and design errors, and companies' adherence to the myth stating that English is the language of business. To address these challenges, the chapter recommends non or reduced reliance on automatic translation and resorting to the services of a professional translator, “transcreators,” and experienced marketers.

As globalization and the internationalization of economies develop, traditional marketing strategies are gradually fading into the background. The digital age is coming, which is forming a new paradigm of international marketing. At the same time, as a result of the COVID–19 pandemic, the processes of transition to digitalization have accelerated. The new paradigm of international marketing is manifested in the intensification of competition, frequent changes in the product range, the need to expand partnerships and the reduction of asymmetry of information. In order to attract and retain customers in the era of advanced digital technologies, successful companies are forced to develop new strategies. New technologies such as Big Data and artificial intelligence are becoming an alternative. Consumer preferences are also changing regarding the form of advertising. Online advertising becomes preferable. With the aim of to identify the main features of the new marketing paradigm, preliminary qualitative secondary and primary studies were conducted. To study secondary information, a search for scientific literature on the research topic was carried out in the databases SCOPUS, Science Direct and Springer, which allowed us to understand the main trends in the development of international marketing in the era of digitalization. To conduct primary research, we compiled a questionnaire, consisted of open-ended questions. The survey was conducted using a Google Form. The questionnaire contained four sections on the following topics: (I) Manifestations of a new marketing paradigm; (II) Marketing strategies in a digital environment; (III) Big data VS Marketing research; and (IV) Online Advertising. A sample of convenience, based on 12 respondents – marketing specialists, allowed formulating marketing strategies in the context of the digitalization of the world.

PurposeThe paper addresses the following research question: how do decision-makers use heuristics in their international business (IB) environment? Whereas, the literature has focused on entrepreneurial companies, here contrasting approaches to learning and using heuristics in international marketing (IM) decisions are examined and discussed.Design/methodology/approachThe paper aims to address a gap in the study of micro-foundations of internationalization, exploiting research from other disciplinary fields. It combines a multidisciplinary literature review and longitudinal case studies to illustrate different approaches in learning and using heuristics by international marketers.FindingsInternational marketers can adopt “closed” heuristics that are consolidated and consistently followed, or “open” heuristics, which are constantly being adapted and learned. Established multinationals learn heuristics in international marketing decision-making, following both “closed” and “open” models.Originality/valueThis paper offers an original contribution by presenting different approaches not yet examined in the literature, focusing on how international marketers make decisions through learning and using heuristic rules. The focus is on established exporters, in contrast to the literature that has largely paid attention to the effectiveness of heuristics in new entrepreneurial firms.

PurposeThis paper aims to analyze the evolution of digital and smart technologies and their relationship with different themes within marketing journals. In addition, this study has included the evolution of digital and smart technologies in relevant International Marketing (IM)/International Business (IB) journals to describe the impact of technology on this specific area to draw some interesting conclusions.Design/methodology/approachA bibliometric approach is applied in this research using science mapping analysis to visualize and reveal the evolution of smart and digital technologies in this specific academic area.FindingsBy combining science maps with performance indicators, the results of this study suggest that new technologies are related to eight main topics within marketing journals: implementation-completion, perceptions, behavior, market competition, adoption-diffusion model, social media, competitive advantage and disruptive technology. Additionally, this work provides new avenues for future research. When analyzing IM and IB journals, the findings highlight six thematic areas: perceptions-eWOM relationship, innovative foreign markets, performance determinants, Japan, industrial research and China.Originality/valueThis study contributes theoretically to developing and describing a framework for research in smart and digital technologies in the general marketing and international marketing/business fields. It adds a coherent perspective on the points of contact in marketing evolution, where smart technology has a meaningful role. This study outlines the changing questions surrounding the touchpoints as well as emerging research topics.

PurposeThis paper aims to advance the international marketing debate by presenting the results of a structured literature review (SLR) focusing on Big Data implementation in customer relationship management (CRM) strategizing. It outlines past and present literature and frames a future research agenda.Design/methodology/approachThe research analyzes papers published in journals from 2013 to 2020, deriving significant insights about Big Data applications in CRM. A sample of 48 articles indexed at Scopus was preliminarily submitted for bibliometric analysis. Finally, 46 papers were analyzed with content and a bibliometric analysis to identify areas of thematic specializations.FindingsThe paper presents a conceptual multilevel framework demonstrating areas of specialization emerging from the literature. The framework is built around four coordinated sequences of actions relevant to “why,” “what,” “who” and “how” Big Data is implemented in CRM strategies, thus supporting the conception and implementation of an internationalization marketing strategy.Research limitations/implicationsImplications for the development of the future research agenda on international marketing arise from the comprehension of Big Data in CRM strategy.Originality/valueThe paper provides a comprehensive SLR of the articles dealing with models and processes of Big Data for CRM from an international marketing perspective. Despite these issues' relevance and the increasing literature focused on them, research in this area is still fragmented and underexplored, requiring more systematic and holistic studies.
