The Status

The photon beam at the LEPS facility is produced by backward-Compton scattering of laser photons from 8 GeV electrons at the SPring-8. The status and prospects of the experimental study on the Θ+ at LEPS are reported. Further evidences for pentaquark baryons and counter-evidences are also discussed.

New Facility

The GeV photon beam at SPring-8 is produced by backward-Compton scattering of laser photons from 8 GeV electrons. Polarization of the photon beam will be ~100% at the maximum energy with fully polarized laser photons. We report the status of the new facility and the prospect of hadron physics study with this high quality beam. Preliminary results from the first physics run are presented.

The spread of the complementation construction o tom, čto in non-standard Russian in recent decades has been attested in previous work. It has been established that the construction has a wide distribution and can replace not only ordinary complement clauses introduced by the complementizer čto (so-called čto-clauses), cf. podtverždat’ o tom, čto + p ‘confirm that p’ instead of podtverždat’, čto + p, but also so-called to, čto-clauses (čto-clauses preceded by a demonstrative), including those embedded in prepositional phrases introduced by a preposi- tion other than o, cf. ostanovit’sja o tom, čto + p ‘settle on the fact that p’ instead of ostanovit’sja na tom, čto + p. The construction can also appear as a clausal complement of nouns, cf. podtverždenie o tom, čto + p ‘confirmation that p’ instead of podtverždenie togo, čto + p. The latter uses have been reported to lead to a milder violation, compared to the uses of the con- struction with verbs. The present study tested the latter hypothesis experimentally by using acceptability judgment data. The experiment tested the effect of the subcategorization of the matrix predicate (in standard Russian), i. e., whether it takes a direct object/čto-clause or a prepositional phrase (embedding a to, čto-clause). The findings suggest that there is a contrast in the status of clausal complements of verbs and nouns, specifically, that the latter are not genuine complements as has been earlier suggested in literature.

Whistleblowing Intention

Whistleblowing is an important action for the organization as a form of internal control of illegal actions that cause losses. This study aimed to test of causality of the personal cost of reporting and status of the wrongdoer on whistleblowing intention. This study used a true experimental design between subjects 2x2. The subjects of this study were 95 accounting study program students. The students acted as the government’s internal auditor. The results of this study indicate that whistleblowing intentions will be higher in personal cost of reporting and the status of the wrongdoer low compared to personal cost of reporting and status of wrongdoer high. A whistleblower prefers not to perform whistleblowing when the wrongdoer has a higher position and sanctions to be received are severe. Compliance in opinions was recorded for 96 students who were individually exposed to an influence procedure enacted by a partner of either superior or subordinate status. During three influence trials, the partner expressed consistently either conventional or unconventional opinions to some students. For others, he shifted in extreme viewpoint, thus contradicting himself from trial to trial. The status identity of the influencing partner and the consistency-inconsistency in expression of attitude were defined as independent dimensions of source trustworthiness. As such, the identity variable was more effective in shaping Ss' opinions than was the sequential content variable. Loss of influence due specifically to the inconsistency factor occurred initially with high status and later with low status partners.
