MICROWAVE DISSIPATION IN YBa2Cu3O7-δ THIN FILMS WITH IRRADIATION-INDUCED COLUMNAR DEFECTS

We present measurements of the magnetic field dependent microwave dissipation in a heavy-ion irradiated thin YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7-δ film, in order to study the effects of columnar defects on the pinning of vortices. Columnar defects were produced at 45° with respect to the c axis. Measurements of the microwave dissipation at 48 GHz were taken as a function of the angle between the field and the c axis, in order to compare the response along and perpendicular to the columns. The field was in the 0.3 T range. Several temperatures near the liquid nitrogen temperature were investigated. We find a dip in the dissipation when the field is aligned to the tracks. The dip is absent when the field is aligned perpendicular to the tracks, and with the same angle with respect to the crystallographic directions. The dip is not very sharp, and shows up for angles as far as 30° from the track directions. From the measurements, we estimate the pinning frequency along the columns at 80 K to be νpc ≃ 25 GHz .

The integral rotation of the angular distribution of γ rays from the 749 keV level of 51 Cr excited by the (α,n) reaction in Ti5Fe95 and Ti5Ni95 targets has been used to measure the hyperfine magnetic fields at Cr nuclei in these alloys at liquid nitrogen temperature. Polycrystalline magnetite (Fe3O4) thin films is synthesized at low temperature (90 oC) by electroless plating in aqueous solution, and the behavior of the magnetic property of the Fe3O4 thin film irradiated by Kr26+ ions at energy of 2.03 GeV is investigated by magnetization measurements. The initial crystallographic structure of the Fe3O4 remains unaffected after swift heavy ion (SHI) irradiation, but both coercive force and saturation magnetization are sensitive to Kr26+ ion irradiation and exhibit different behaviors depending on the ion fluence range. And SHI irradiation could make the magnetic moments of the Fe3O4 films ordered around the columnar defects and the magnetic moments tend to arrange along the films plane. All modifications of the magnetic properties could be interpreted very well by the effects related to the stress and defects induced by SHI irradiation.

A new method has been developed for obtaining relative values of the surface energy parameter, Δ, in superconductors. It involves the measurement of the resistance of thin films subjected to a transverse magnetic field. The method has been applied to tin, indium and aluminium and to dilute alloys of the first two. The principal new results are that Δ is 1⋅48 times larger in indium than in tin and that the addition of impurity to either metal lowers Δ without changing the nature of its temperature dependence. These conclusions are compared with current theories of the interphase surface energy. An attempt has been made to deduce the absolute magnitude of Δ, which requires a detailed analysis of the way in which the last traces of the superconducting phase are eliminated from the film by the action of the magnetic field. The analysis is necessarily over-simplified but it does give a figure for Δ in pure tin which is reasonably consistent with the previous estimates of Faber and Sharvin.
