Microstructural evolution and flow behavior of twin-roll cast AZ41 magnesium alloy during hot compression were characterized by employing deformation temperature of 300°C, 350°C and 400°C, and strain rate ranging from 10-3 to 10-2 s -1. When compressed at different temperature (300°C, 350°C and 400°C) and strain rate (10-3 and 10-2 s -1) all stress strain curves showed a flow softening behavior before strained to 0.51 due to dynamic recrystallization, even though concurrent twinning was quite active. Twinning contributed to the flow hardening behavior appeared during the end of hot compression (ε > 0.51) at a strain rate of 10-2 s -1 and elevated temperature (300°C, 350°C and 400°C) in spite of the softening effect of concurrently occurred dynamic recrystallization. TEM image showed that discontinuous recrystallization occurred when deformed at elevated temperature as high as 400°C and the strain rate ranging from 10-2 to 10-3 s -1. It is suggested that dislocation slip, twinning and recrystallization develop in a cyclic mode from initial stage to the end of hot compression.

The high temperature compressive tests of squeeze casting ZK60 magnesium alloy with temperatures of 573-723K and strain rate in the range of 0.001-1s-1 were performed on Gleeble-1500D thermal simulator testing machine. Optical microscopy was performed to elaborate on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grain growth. TEM findings indicate that mechanical twinning, dislocation slip, and dynamic recrystallization are the materials typical deformation features. Variations of flow behavior with deformation temperature as well as strain rate were analyzed. Analysis of the flow behavior and microstructure observations indicated that flow localization was observed at lower temperature and higher strain rates, which should be avoided during mechanical processing. Dynamic recrystallization occurred at higher temperature and moderate strain rates, which improved the ductility of the material. The optimum hot working conditions for ZK60 alloy were suggested.

Hot compression tests of AZ61 magnesium alloy were performed on gleeble1500D at strain rate ranged in 0.01~1s-1 and deformation temperature 350~400°C.The results show that the flow stress and microstructures strongly depend on the deformation temperature and the strain rate. When the temperature was reduced and the strain rate was enhanced, the area after dynamic recrystallization was enhanced, and the average dynamically recrystallied grain size reduce. But the dynamically recrystallied grain size was not well-proportioned. In this paper the 350°C×1s-1 was suggested.

The flow behavior of a 7039 aluminum alloy and the corresponding microstructural evolution during hot deformation were studied by Gleeble-1500 thermal simulation tests, EBSD and TEM observations with temperatures ranging from 300 °C to 500 °C under strain rates from 0.01 s-1 to 10 s-1. It has been shown that the flow stress increases with the decrease in the deformation temperature and increase in the strain rate. The degree of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) increases with the increase in the deformation temperature and strain rate in 7039 aluminum alloy. The complete dynamic recrystallization occurs at 500 °C with a strain rate of 10 s-1.

Hot compression of AZ3l magnesium alloy was carried out at deformation temperatures of 523-723K and strain rates of 0.01-10s-1. The effects of deformation process on the microstructure and flow stress were investigated. The flow stress curves showed the characteristic of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) with deformation process parameters. Optical microscopy and TEM observations indicated that dynamic recrystallisation and twins structure were found during hot compression. Deformation mechanism of AZ3l magnesium alloy at elevated temperature was discussed in this paper.

Flow stress behavior during initial stage of hot compression of twin-roll cast ZK60 magnesium alloy was characterized by employing deformation temperature of 300°C and 400°C, and a given strain rate of 10-2 s -1. A stress drop during initial stage of hot compression at 300°C, generally led by dynamic recrystallization, was found to be attributed to twinning, correspondingly to dynamic recrystallization as deformation temperature was raised to 400°C.

In this study, hot rolling trials were conducted on a twin-roll cast and homogenized magnesium alloy Mg-6.8Y-2.5Zn (WZ73). The WZ73 contains long period stacking ordered (LPSO) structures due to the ratio of Y and Zn content. Microstructural and texture evolution depending on the different strain and strain rates were investigated, and the resulting mechanical properties were also considered. Therefore, samples were quenched in water directly after hot rolling. The results revealed that the rolling parameters significantly influence dynamic recrystallization (DRX), while continuous and twin-induced dynamic recrystallization are assumed to be the main DRX mechanisms. It was also found that high strains and strain rates are required to proceed the DRX. The resulting textures revealed that the non-basal slip of <a>-dislocations and <c+a>-dislocations is activated during hot rolling. Hot rolling results in increased strength and ductility compared to the initial twin-roll cast and homogenized state.
