This paper examines the classification capability of different Gabor representations for human face recognition. Usually, Gabor filter responses for eight orientations and five scales for each orientation are calculated and all 40 basic feature vectors are concatenated to assemble the Gabor feature vector. This work explores 70 different Gabor feature vector extraction techniques for face recognition. The main goal is to determine the characteristics of the 40 basic Gabor feature vectors and to devise a faster Gabor feature extraction method. Among all the 40 basic Gabor feature representations the filter responses acquired from the largest scale at smallest relative orientation change (with respect to face) shows the highest discriminating ability for face recognition while classification is performed using three classification methods: probabilistic neural networks (PNN), support vector machines (SVM) and decision trees (DT). A 40 times faster summation based Gabor representation shows about 98% recognition rate while classification is performed using SVM. In this representation all 40 basic Gabor feature vectors are summed to form the summation based Gabor feature vector. In the experiment, a sixth order data tensor containing the basic Gabor feature vectors is constructed, for all the operations.

To address the problem that the dimension of the feature vector extracted by Local Binary Pattern (LBP) for face recognition is too high and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) extract features are not the best classification features, an efficient feature extraction method using LBP, PCA and Maximum scatter difference (MSD) has been introduced in this paper. The original face image is firstly divided into sub-images, then the LBP operator is applied to extract the histogram feature. and the feature dimensions are further reduced by using PCA. Finally,MSD is performed on the reduced PCA-based feature. The experimental results on ORL and Yale database demonstrate that the proposed method can classify more effectively and can get higher recognition rate than the traditional recognition methods.

Abstract Facial recognition is one of the main research directions in the field of artificial intelligence and image processing. It has been widely used in identity authentication, video surveillance and biological detection. Because it is non-contact, natural, convenient and reliable, facial recognition has become a popular choice for biometric systems. The accuracy of facial recognition still needs to be improved, the main goal of this paper is to improve the accuracy of face recognition. Based on the support vector machine method, the focus is on the feature extraction and feature matching of face images. In view of the particularity of face images, the pre-processing of face images is studied. In this paper, grayscale normalization and geometric normalization pre-processing methods are used. In order to reduce the interference factors of the image as much as possible, the features are high-lighted, and the non-featured parts are weakened, this paper adopts the Histogram of Oriented Gradient feature extraction method. Then we proposed a new method based on SVM, which uses a one-to-many method to construct multiple SVM classifiers, selects the optimal parameters through repeated experiments, and selects ORL face database for testing. The recognition rate can reach about 98.5%.

In practice Gabor wavelet is often applied to extract relevant features from a facial image. This wavelet is constructed using filters of multiple scales and orientations. Based on Gabor’s theory of communication, two methods are proposed to acquire initial features from 2D images that are Gabor wavelet and Log-Gabor wavelet. Theoretically the main difference between these two wavelets is Log-Gabor wavelet produces DC free filter responses, whereas Gabor filter responses retain DC components. This experimental study determines the characteristics of Gabor and Log-Gabor filters for face recognition. In the experiment, two sixth order data tensor are created; one containing the basic Gabor feature vectors and the other containing the basic Log-Gabor feature vectors. This study reveals the characteristics of the filter orientations for Gabor and Log-Gabor filters for face recognition. These two implementations show that the Gabor filter having orientation zero means oriented at 0 degree with respect to the aligned face has the highest discriminating ability, while Log-Gabor filter with orientation three means 45 degree has the highest discriminating ability. This result is consistent across three different frequencies (scales) used for this experiment. It is also observed that for both the wavelets, filters with low frequency have higher discriminating ability.

The biometric identification of a person using face trait is more efficient compared to other traits as the co-operation of a person is not required. In this paper, we propose a feature vector compression approach for face recognition using convolution and DWT.The one level DWT is applied on face images and considered only LL band. The normalized technique is applied on LL sub band to reduce high value coefficients into lower range of values ranging between Zero and one. The novel concept of linear convolution is applied on original image and LL band matrix to enhance quality of face images to obtain unique features. The Gaussian filter is applied on the output of convolution block to reduce high frequency components to generate fine-tuned feature vectors. The numbers of feature vectors of many samples of single person are converted into a single vector which reduces number of features of each person. The Euclidean distance is used to compare test image features with features of database persons to compute performance parameters. It is observed that the performance recognition rate is high compared to existing techniques.

A gearbox vibration signal contains non-linear impact characteristics and the significant feature information tends to be overwhelmed by other interference components, which make it difficult to extract the typical fault features fully and effectively. Aiming at the key issue of how to effectively extract the impact characteristics, a fault diagnosis method based on improved extreme symmetric mode decomposition (ESMD) and a support vector machine (SVM) is proposed in this paper. The vibration signal is adaptively decomposed into multiple intrinsic mode function (IMF) components by the improved ESMD and then a certain number of components are selected with the maximum kurtosis-envelope spectrum index. The singular spectral entropy, energy entropy and permutation entropy of each component are applied to construct the feature vector set, in which the dimensionality of the set is reduced with the distance separability criterion. Finally, the dimension-reduced feature vector set is input into the SVM for pattern recognition. Dynamic simulation and experimental gearbox research show that the improved ESMD method can extract and identify gearbox fault information effectively.

Human action recognition (HAR) is one of most significant research topics, and it has attracted the concentration of many researchers. Automatic HAR system is applied in several fields like visual surveillance, data retrieval, healthcare, etc. Based on this inspiration, in this chapter, the authors propose a new HAR model that considers an image as input and analyses and exposes the action present in it. Under the analysis phase, they implement two different feature extraction methods with the help of rotation invariant Gabor filter and edge adaptive wavelet filter. For every action image, a new vector called as composite feature vector is formulated and then subjected to dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis (PCA). Finally, the authors employ the most popular supervised machine learning algorithm (i.e., support vector machine [SVM]) for classification. Simulation is done over two standard datasets; they are KTH and Weizmann, and the performance is measured through an accuracy metric.

In the speech recognition technology, feature extraction is essential for the system recognition rate, taking amount of strategies to find the better feature vectors are most researchers target. This paper presents a method of extracting feature of audio signal based on the discrete wavelet transform, then decomposed the coefficient matrix by the matrix analysis way, through this method to find a new thinking on the way of extracting feature vector. The method can be achieved in the procedure. The main purpose is to reduce the dimension of feature vector, make the vector briefer, and then reduce the computing complexity in the embedded system. This method can reduce the feature vectors dimension, accelerated the computing velocity.

This paper presents a real-time face recognition system. For the system to be real time, no external time-consuming feature extraction method is used, rather the gray-level values of the raw pixels that make up the face pattern are fed directly to the recognizer. In order to absorb the resulting high dimensionality of the input space, support vector machines (SVMs), which are known to work well even in high-dimensional space, are used as the face recognizer. Furthermore, a modified form of polynomial kernel (local correlation kernel) is utilized to take account of prior knowledge about facial structures and is used as the alternative feature extractor. Since SVMs were originally developed for two-class classification, their basic scheme is extended for multiface recognition by adopting one-per-class decomposition. In order to make a final classification from several one-per-class SVM outputs, a neural network (NN) is used as the arbitrator. Experiments with ORL database show a recognition rate of 97.9% and speed of 0.22 seconds per face with 40 classes.
