This paper studies the evolution of a fish stock that is exploited by an n-country oligopoly. A feature of the economic structure is that the countries exploiting the fish stock experience time lags in obtaining and implementing information on the fish stock. The local asymptotic behavior of the equilibrium is analyzed, including asymptotic stability, instability, and cyclical behavior. Under the assumption of symmetric countries, two special cases are examined in detail. In the first case identical time delays are assumed, and in the second case it is assumed that one country has a different time delay from the others. This semi-symmetric case gives some insight into the consequence of asymmetry of the countries on the asymptotic behavior of the fish stock.

Background On the basis of electroencephalographic analysis, several parameters have been proposed as a measure of the hypnotic component of anesthesia. All currently available indices have different time lags to react to a change in the level of anesthesia. The aim of this study was to determine the latency of three frequently used indices: the Cerebral State Index (Danmeter, Odense, Denmark), the Bispectral Index (Aspect Medical Systems Inc., Newton, MA), and the Narcotrend Index (MonitorTechnik, Bad Bramstedt, Germany). Methods Artificially generated signals were used to produce up to 14 constant index values per monitor that indicate "awake state," "general anesthesia," and "deep anesthesia" and smaller steps in between. The authors simulated loss of and return to consciousness by changing between the artificial electroencephalographic signals in a full-step and two stepwise approaches and measured the time necessary to adapt the indices to the particular input signal. Results Time delays between 14 and 155 s were found for all indices. These delays were not constant. Results were different for decreasing and increasing values and between the full-step and the stepwise approaches. Calculation time depended on the particular starting and target index value. Conclusions The time delays of the tested indices may limit their value in prevention of recall of intraoperative events. Furthermore, different latencies for decreasing and increasing values may indicate a limitation of these monitors for pharmacodynamic studies.

A class of time-delay reaction-diffusion systems with variable coefficients which arise from the model of two competing ecological species is discussed. An asymptotic global attractor is established in terms of the variable coefficients, independent of the time delays and the effect of diffusion by the upper-lower solutions and iteration method.

To gain insight into complex biological endocrine glucose-insulin regulatory system where the interactions of components of the metabolic system and time-delay inherent in the biological system give rise to complex dynamics. The modeling has increased interest and importance in physiological research and enhanced the medical treatment protocols. This brief contains a new model using time delay differential equations, which give an accurate result by utilizing two explicit time delays. The bifurcation analysis has been conducted to find the main system parameters bifurcation values and corresponding system behaviors. The results found consistent with the biological experiments results.

A delay-dependent robust fuzzy control approach is developed for a class of nonlinear uncertain interconnected time delay large systems in this paper. First, an equivalent T–S fuzzy model is extended in order to accurately represent nonlinear dynamics of the large system. Then, a decentralized state feedback robust controller is proposed to guarantee system stabilization with a prescribedH∞disturbance attenuation level. Furthermore, taking into account the time delays in large system, based on a less conservative delay-dependent Lyapunov function approach combining with linear matrix inequalities (LMI) technique, some sufficient conditions for the existence ofH∞robust controller are presented in terms of LMI dependent on the upper bound of time delays. The upper bound of time-delay and minimizedH∞performance index can be obtained by using convex optimization such that the system can be stabilized and for all time delays whose sizes are not larger than the bound. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is demonstrated through simulation example.

One-dimensional random walks with a constant velocity between scattering are considered. The exact solution is expressed in terms of multiple convolutions of path-distributions assumed to be different for positive and negative directions of the walk axis. Several special cases are considered when the convolutions are expressed in explicit form. As a particular case, the solution of A. S. Monin for a symmetric random walk with exponential path distribution and its generalization to the asymmetric case are obtained. Solution of fractional telegraph equation with the fractional material derivative is presented. Asymptotic behavior of its solution for an asymmetric case is provided.

AbstractThe steady-state size of bacterial cells correlates with nutrient-determined growth rate. Here, we explore how rod-shaped bacterial cells regulate their morphology during rapid environmental changes. We quantify cellular dimensions throughout passage cycles of stationary-phase cells diluted into fresh medium and grown back to saturation. We find that cells exhibit characteristic dynamics in surface area to volume ratio (SA/V), which are conserved across genetic and chemical perturbations as well as across species and growth temperatures. A mathematical model with a single fitting parameter (the time delay between surface and volume synthesis) is quantitatively consistent with our SA/V experimental observations. The model supports that this time delay is due to differential expression of volume and surface-related genes, and that the first division after dilution occurs at a tightly controlled SA/V. Our minimal model thus provides insight into the connections between bacterial growth rate and cell shape in dynamic environments.

Hypocalcemia is a rare, but reversible, cause of dilated cardiomyopathy. Although cardiomyopathy may cause severe heart failure, calcium supplementation can reverse heart failure. We report here a patient with uremia and secondary hyperparathyroidism, who was complicated by persistent hypocalcemia and refractory heart failure. The cardiac failure was refractory to treatment with digitalis and diuretics, but dramatically responded to calcium therapy and restoration of normocalcemia. As a result, the patient was eventually diagnosed with hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of this disease to be reported in a patient with uremia. Findings from our case may help clinicians to better understand hypocalcemic cardiomyopathy. Our case might also provide new insight into long-term cardiac complications and prognoses of patients undergoing parathyroidectomy due to secondary hyperparathyroidism.

This paper considers methods for estimating the mutual time delay of broadband signals recorded by satellites based multi-position systems for determining the location of a radiation source. All methods considered are based on modified algorithms for calculating the ambiguity function. The presented algorithms are based on the extraction of narrowband channels from the studied signals and their further optimal processing. The reliability criterion for mutual time delay estimation by the presented methods was evaluated. Based on the results and analysis of computational efficiency, viability of methods considered and their modifications was determined.

Time-intensity trade for selected spondaically stressed words was investigated using a centering method for interaural time delays of 0.00, 1.00, 2.00, 2.25, 2.50, and 2.75 msec at five levels of presentation: 0-, 25-, 40-, 55-, and 70-dB HL (ANSI, 1969). Lateralization effects increased with level of presentation, with a maximum lateralization effect of between 22 and 30 dB occuring with an interaural time delay of 2.25 msec. Multiple images were perceived by all subjects with an interaural time delay of 2.75 msec and by some subjects with an interaural time delay of 2.50 msec at high levels of presentation. No “ear effect” was observed for any of the listeners. A potential clinical application is discussed for this temporal speech-Stenger effect.
