Active Restricted Control for Harmonic Vibration Suppression

Active control systems are always restricted in one form or another. One of the restrictions is the lack of sensors or actuators for control implementation. This restricted control problem in the form of partial sensing and actuation thus poses a challenging problem for active controls, since most of the existing approaches make the implicit assumption that such information is readily available. This paper discusses the possibility of controlling structural vibration using restricted sensing and actuation control methodology. This opens a new avenue that, although counter to the current development in active control system designs through smart materials and smart structures, is readily applicable in practice. A number of fundamental results are derived concerning the active restricted controller properties, while algorithms are presented for the implementation. A case study is also provided, which demonstrates the feasibility of active restricted vibration control solutions.

Abstract This paper presents an analytical investigation on active control of the elastodynamic response of a four-bar (4R) mechanism system using “smart” materials featuring piezoelectric sensor/actuator (S/A) pairs and multivariable optimal control. The 4R mechanism consists of a flexible coupler link, relatively flexible follower link, and a relatively rigid crank. Two thin plate-type piezoceramic S/A pairs are bonded to the flanks of the coupler link at high strain locations corresponding to the first and second vibration modes. Based on the optimal multivariable control theory, a controller which consists of a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and a Luenberger observer as a state estimator is designed and implemented. As the mechanism changes configuration, its modal characteristics are recalculated, and the controller is redesigned. The dynamic model used for the controller design includes the second and fourth vibration modes of the mechanism system. These modes are predominated by the first two bending modes of the mechanism’s coupler link. The results showed that while the proposed active control strategy is successful in reducing the amplitudes of vibrations about the quasistatic response, it has no effect on the quasistatic deflections due to steady state loading.

The integration of actuators and sensors using smart materials enabled various applications including health monitoring and structural vibration control. In this study, a robust control technique is designed and implemented in order to reduce vibration of an active structure. Special attention is given to eliminating the possibility of interaction between the health monitoring system and the control system. Exploiting the disturbance decoupling characteristic of the sliding mode observer, it is demonstrated that the proposed observer can eliminate the possible high frequency excitation from the health monitoring system. At the same time, a damage identification scheme, which tracks the changes of mechanical impedance due to the presence of damage, has been applied to assess the health condition of structures. The main objective of this paper is to examine the potential of combining the two emerging techniques together. Using the collocated piezoelectric sensors/actuators for vibration suppression as well as for health monitoring, this technique enabled to reduce the number of system components, while enhancing the performance of structures. As an initial study, both simulation and experimental investigations were performed for an active beam structure. The results show that this integrated technique can provide substantial vibration reductions, while detecting damage on the structure at the same time.

The vibration suppression of structures using a semi-active mass damper is investigated in this study. A magnetorheological (MR)-damper is utilized to design the semi-actively controlled mass damper. The inverse MR-damper model is developed on the basis of an improved LuGre friction model, and combined with a designed H2/Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (H2/LQG) controller, in order to control the command current of the MR-damper to suppress structural vibration levels effectively. Illustrated examples are considered to investigate the vibration suppression effectiveness of a semi-active mass damper with a MR-damper, using the developed control methodology. The simulation results were compared with those reported in literature in order to validate the presented methodology.

In this paper, machinery equipment induced structural vibration was investigated and a composite system for structure and equipment was proposed. Tuned mass damper (TMD) and active tuned mass damper (ATMD) were respectively performed for vibration control, in addition, particle swarm optimization (PSO) was utilized for pursuing an optimal active control. Numerical results confirmed that the presented active control strategy could achieve a better vibration suppression compared to TMD control. The PSO based active control also gave inspiration for improving the traditional vibration control.

To date, considerable attention has been paid to the development of structural vibration suppression techniques. Among all vibration suppression devices and techniques, the tuned mass damper is one of the most promising technologies due to its mechanical simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and reliable operation. In this article, a critical review of the structural vibration suppression using tuned mass damper technology will be presented mainly focused on the following four categories: (1) tuned mass damper technology and its modifications, (2) tuned mass damper technology in discrete and continuous structures (mathematical modeling), (3) optimization procedure to obtain the optimally designed tuned mass damper system, and (4) active tuned mass damper and semi-active tuned mass damper with the practical realization of the tuned mass damper technologies.

Rotating beams are quite common in rotating machinery e.g. fans of compressors in an airplane. This paper presents the experimental, hybrid, structural vibration control of flexible structures to enhance the vibration behavior of rotating beams. Smart materials have been used as sensors as well as actuators. Passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) treatment is combined with stressed layer damping technique to enhance the damping characteristics of the flexible beam. To further enhance the damping parameters, a closed form robust feedback controller is applied to reduce the broadband structural vibrations of the rotating beam. The feed forward controller is designed by combing with the feedback controller using a pattern search based optimization technique. The hybrid controller enhances the performance of the closed loop system. Experiments have been conducted to validate the effectiveness of the presented technique.

For bladed-disk assemblies in turbomachinery, the elements are often exposed to aerodynamic loadings, the so-called engine order excitations. It has been reported that such excitations could cause significant structural vibration. The vibration level could become even more excessive when the bladed disk is mistuned, and may cause fatigue damage to the engine components. To effectively suppress vibration in bladed disks, a piezoelectric transducer networking concept has been explored previously by the authors. While promising, the idea was developed based on a simplified bladed-disk model without considering the disk dynamics. To advance the state of the art, this research further extends the investigation with focus on new circuitry designs for a more sophisticated and realistic system model with the consideration of coupled-blade-disk dynamics. A novel multicircuit piezoelectric transducer network is synthesized and analyzed for multiple-harmonic vibration suppression of bladed disks. An optimal network is derived analytically. The performance of the network for bladed disks with random mistuning is examined through Monte Carlo simulation. The effects of variations (mistuning and detuning) in circuit parameters are also studied. A method to improve the system performance and robustness utilizing negative capacitance is discussed. Finally, experiments are carried out to demonstrate the vibration suppression capability of the proposed piezoelectric circuitry network.
