Free base porphyrin in chloroform solution irradiated with focused laser beam, in an open Z-scan set-up, changed color from purple to green, which was associated with protonation of the porphyrin with protonic species from photodegradation of the solvent. Protonation is demonstrated as a simple means to improve the optical limiting performance of free base porphyrin nonlinear optical (NLO) materials.

The nonlinear-optical and optical limiting properties of 2(3), 9(10), 16(17), 23(24) phenoxy-phthalocyanines have been investigated using a 10-ns-pulse laser at 532 nm. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (β) is measured by the single beam Z-scan technique. We have observed low power optical limiting, with low limiting thresholds, based on nonlinear absorption in the sample. These studies indicate that the phthalocyanine material is a potential candidate for low power optical limiting applications.

A novel dmit 2- complex: [( C 2 H 5)4 N][Co(dmit) 2], abbreviated as EtCo , was synthesized and its third-order optical nonlinearities were characterized by Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 40 ps. Z-scan curves revealed a negative nonlinear refraction at 1064 nm and a positive absorption was observed. The nonlinear refraction coefficient n2, the nonlinear absorption coefficient β and the molecular second hyperpolarizability γ have been determined to be as large as 9.51×10-19 m 2/ W , 2.19×10-12 m/W and 5.41×10-31 esu respectively, suggesting that this material has potential applications in optical limiting.

Passive optical limiting devices based on nonlinear optical (NLO) materials exhibit a throughput radiation level that is related to the magnitude of the nonlinear material parameters. We model both optically ‘thick’ and optically ‘thin’ limiters based on intensity dependent, χ(3) nonlinearities and predict the magnitude of the nonlinearities required to provide protection for the human eye from laser induced damage for a specific optical system. These calculated nonlinearities are given in terms of a required index change, n2, or absorption change, β.

AbstractWe have set up an experimental device to optically study the scattering properties of dust particles. Measurements over the 8 — 174° interval of scattering angles are performed on a continuously flowing dust loaded jet illuminated by a polarized red HeNe laser beam. The scattering is averaged over the population of the dust particles in the jet, which can be determined independently, and give the “volume scattering function” for the two directions of polarization directly. While results for spherical particles are in good agreement with Mie theory, those for arbitrary particles show conspicuous deviations.
