Mapping the complexity of Transform Margins

AbstractTransform margins are a function of the pre-existing crustal architecture (pre-transform) and the interplay of syn- and post-transform geodynamic processes. We use a suite of geospatial databases to investigate four transform margins: East Africa (Davie Deformational Zone, DDZ), Equatorial Africa, and the South African and Falkland (Malvinas) margins (Agulhas-Falkland Fracture Zone, AFFZ). The East African margin is the most complex of the four. This is a consequence of Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous transform motion affecting highly heterogeneous crust, and post-transform deformation that varies along the margin. Equatorial Africa most closely adheres to traditional definitions of “transform margins”, but actually comprises two principal transform systems - the Romanche and St. Pauls, dictated by the pre-transform distribution of mobile belts and West African craton. All four margins are spatially associated with volcanism, and each exhibits narrow uplifts associated with transpression or transtension. But the causal relationship of these features with transform processes differ. Volcanism along the East African margin is pre- and post-transform. Syn-transform volcanism on the AFFZ is spatially limited, with the AFFZ possibly acting as a conduit for magmatism rather than as a causal driver. Transform margins are varied and complex and require an understanding of pre-, syn- and post-transform geodynamics.

African English varieties are discussed in this paper, including West African English, East African English and South African English. Kenya and Tanzania corpus is the main target corpus while Jamaica corpus is used as a comparative one. The tool used is AntConc 3.2.4.

Publishing in Africa remains so difficult an enterprise that many publishers have collapsed, their dreams disappearing with them. This is especially true of the print media, particularly newspapers and magazines. During the past century, many magazines and newspapers failed to establish a loyal readership, keep costs down, insure wide circulation, or turn a huge profit. Consequently, not many African magazines can be viewed as “successful.” Drum magazine, however, remains an exception.In 1951 Drum, a magazine written for and by Africans, was established in South Africa. Drum enjoyed a great deal of success and is now widely recognized as having been a driving force in black South African culture and life throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In the South African historiography Drum has been thoroughly researched. The magazine's impact on South African journalism, literature, gender configurations, African resistance, and urban South African culture has been documented and often lauded by various scholars. Many former members of the South African edition's payroll, both editors and staff alike, have gone on to become successes in literature, journalism, and photography. Often such staff members credit Drum for directly shaping their careers and directly state this in their writings. Consequently, Drum is often associated only with South Africa. While Drum greatly influenced South Africa, its satel¬lite projects throughout Africa were no less important. These satellite projects cemented Drum's reputation as the leading magazine newspaper in Africa and each edition became fixtures in west African and east African societies.

<p>The West African Craton (WAC) is one of the major cratons in the Rodinia jigsaw puzzle (~1000–750 Ma). In the Rodinian models, the position of West Africa is mainly constrained by the assumption that it had been a partner of Amazonia since the Paleoproterozoic. Unfortunately, no paleomagnetic data are available for these cratons when the Rodina supercontinent is considered tectonically stable (~1000-750 Ma). Thus, every new reliable paleomagnetic pole for the West African Craton during the Neoproterozoic times is of paramount importance to constrain its position and testing the Rodinia models. In this study we present a combined paleomagnetic and geochronological investigation for the Manso dyke swarm in the Leo-Man Shield, southern West Africa (Ghana). The ~860 Ma emplacement age for the NNW-trending Manso dykes is thus well-constrained by two new U-Pb apatite ages of 857.2 ± 8.5 Ma and 855 ± 16 Ma, in agreement with baddeleyite data. Remanence of these coarse-to-fine grained dolerite dykes is carried by stable single to pseudo-single domain (SD-PSD) magnetite. A positive baked-contact test, associated to a positive reversal test (Class-C), support the primary remanence obtained for these dykes (13 sites). Moreover, our new paleomagnetic dataset satisfy all the seven R-criteria (R=7). The ~860 Ma Manso pole can thus be considered as the first key Tonian paleomagnetic pole for West Africa. We propose that the West Africa-Baltica-Amazonia-Congo-São Francisco were associated in a long-lived WABAMGO juxtaposition (~1100–800 Ma).</p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> West Africa, Neoproterozoic, Tonian, Rodinia, paleomagnetism.</p><p> </p>
