For integer-order systems, there are well-known practical rules for RL sketching. Nevertheless, these rules cannot be directly applied to fractional-order (FO) systems. Besides, the existing literature on this topic is scarce and exclusively focused on commensurate systems, usually expressed as the ratio of two noninteger polynomials. The practical rules derived for those do not apply to other symbolic expressions, namely, to transfer functions expressed as the ratio of FO zeros and poles. However, this is an important case as it is an extension of the classical integer-order problem usually addressed by control engineers. Extending the RL practical sketching rules to such FO systems will contribute to decrease the lack of intuition about the corresponding system dynamics. This paper generalises several RL practical sketching rules to transfer functions specified as the ratio of FO zeros and poles. The subject is presented in a didactic perspective, being the rules applied to several examples.

The well-known root-locus method is developed for special subset of linear time-invariant systems known as fractional-order systems. Transfer functions of these systems are rational functions with polynomials of rational powers of the Laplace variables. Such systems are defined on a Riemann surface because of their multivalued nature. A set of rules for plotting the root loci on the first Riemann sheet is presented. The important features of the classical root-locus method such as asymptotes, roots condition on the real axis, and breakaway points are extended to fractional case. It is also shown that the proposed method can assess the closed-loop stability of fractional-order systems in the presence of a varying gain in the loop. Three illustrative examples are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The first steps of the theory of fractional calculus and some applications traced back to the first half of the nineteenth century, the subject only really came to life over the last few decades. A particular feature is that fractional derivatives provide an excellent instrument for the description of memory and hereditary properties of various materials and processes. This is the main advantage of fractional models in comparison with classical integer-order models; another feature is that scientists have developed new models that involve fractional differential equations in mechanics, electrical engineering. Many scientists have become aware of the potential use of chaotic dynamics in engineering applications. With the development of the fractional-order algorithm, the dynamics of fractional order systems have received much attention. Chaos cannot occur in continuous integer order systems of total order less than three due to the Poincare-Bendixon theorem. It has been shown that many fractional-order dynamical systems behave chaotically with total order less than three.

Currently, fractional-order systems are attracting the attention of many researchers because they present a better representation of many physical systems in several areas, compared with integer-order models. This article contains two main contributions. In the first one, we suggest a new approach to fractional-order systems modelling. This model is represented by an explicit transfer function based on the multi-model approach. In the second contribution, a new method of computation of the validity of library models, according to the frequency [Formula: see text], is exposed. Finally, a global model is obtained by fusion of library models weighted by their respective validities. Illustrative examples are presented to show the advantages and the quality of the proposed strategy.

The history of fractional calculus dates back to 1600s and it is almost as old as classical mathematics. Although many studies have been published on fractional-order control systems in recent years, there is still a lack of analytical solutions. The focus of this study is to obtain analytical solutions for fractional order transfer functions with a single fractional element and unity coefficient. Approximate inverse Laplace transformation, that is, time response of the basic transfer function, is obtained analytically for the fractional order transfer functions with single-fractional-element by curve fitting method. Obtained analytical equations are tabulated for some fractional orders of [Formula: see text]. Moreover, a single function depending on fractional order alpha has been introduced for the first time using a table for [Formula: see text]. By using this table, approximate inverse Laplace transform function is obtained in terms of any fractional order of [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]. Obtained analytic equations offer accurate results in computing inverse Laplace transforms. The accuracy of the method is supported by numerical examples in this study. Also, the study sets the basis for the higher fractional-order systems that can be decomposed into a single (simpler) fractional order systems.

Abstract RIOTS is a Matlab toolbox capable of solving a very general form of integer order optimal control problems. In this paper, we present an approach for implementing Model Predictive Control (MPC) to control a general form of fractional order systems using RIOTS toolbox. This approach is based on time-response-invariant approximation of fractional order system with an integer order model to be used as the internal model in MPC. The implementation of this approach is demonstrated to control a coupled MIMO commensurate fractional order model. Moreover, the performance and its application process is compared to examples reported in the literature.

We propose a fractional model for computer virus propagation. The model includes the interaction between computers and removable devices. We simulate numerically the model for distinct values of the order of the fractional derivative and for two sets of initial conditions adopted in the literature. We conclude that fractional order systems reveal richer dynamics than the classical integer order counterpart. Therefore, fractional dynamics leads to time responses with super-fast transients and super-slow evolutions towards the steady-state, effects not easily captured by the integer order models.

The problem of Mittag–Leffler stabilization (MLS) is studied for a class of nonlinear non-integer order systems. The stabilizer is constructed by using the Lyapunov function and backstepping algorithm. The continuous controller is designed to ensure that the state of the nonlinear fractional-order closed-loop system converges to the equilibrium. Two simulation examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.
