Introduction/Objective. A pressure ulcer is a localized injury to the skin and/or underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence. It appears as a result of pressure or combination of pressure and shear. Pressure ulcers can be identified within a wide variety of patient subpopulations and a major role in their treatment plays epidemiological and etiological aspects. Methods. A retrospective study of data analysis included 72 patients with pressure ulcers that were hospitalized and surgically treated during a five-year period at the Clinic for Burns, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the University Clinical Center of Serbia in Belgrade. Main data features used in the analysis were: gender, age, principal diseases, comorbidities and biochemical indicators of malnutrition. The patients' data was obtained from the existing patients? records. Additionally, the study analyzed the method of treating pressure ulcers, types of reconstructive methods in surgical treatment, as well as the incidence rate of partial osteotomy. Results. A total of 72 patients with pressure ulcers were included into this study with 54.7 ? 16.1 mean age. Three times more patients injured in traffic accidents were male (75% vs. 25%), while the most of the patients with multiple sclerosis were female (85.7%). More than 95% of patients who had pressure ulcers of III or IV stage were treated surgically with a reconstructive method of transposition or rotation myocutaneous flap. The patient with pressure ulcer of stage IV was usually treated with partial osteotomy. Conclusion. A surgical reconstructive treatment with fasciocutaneous and myocutanaeous flaps represents a gold standard for treating patients with pressure ulcers. These procedures provide reconstruction with adequate flap coverage and obliteration of dead space with well-vascularized tissue but with necessity of further implementation of antidecubitus measures.

Professor Gus McGrouther works two days a week at the Wythenshawe Hospital and three days running a research group at the University of Manchester, where he is the UK's first professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Nick Kalson talked to him about the future of surgery and academic medicine.

Legend of plastic surgery, the great founder has gone. José Guerrerosantos, M.D. (Fig 1), was not only a Director and Plastic Surgeon in Charge, The Jalisco Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute; Professor and Chairman of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, University of Guadalajara Medical College, Guadalajara, Mexico. He was a founding father of the Instituto Jalisciense de Cirugia Reconstructiva (The Jalisco Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Institute), a hospital affiliated with the University of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico [1]. One of his scientific “children” – Manual of Aesthetic Surgery (editors: Fisher JC, Guerrerosantos J, Gleason M) (Fig 2) is a state of art textbook [2], an immortal masterpiece, which continues to navigate next generations of plastic surgeons in the extremely responsible field of surgery. The sacred Manual, which is a testament for surgeons of different subspecialties. Also, contribution of Professor José Guerrerosantos to the flap of tongue is really helped to lift a flap surgery to the new heights. Professor Guerrerosantos was born as a son of Mexico and will continue to live in his creations, our minds, and the works of his disciples. And it`s very symbolic, that his students and disciples named and still names him the same name as a Jesus was called… “a Teacher”…

ABSTRACT Background: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is frequent pathology in neurosurgical practice. The aim of this study is to present the first series of patients with CSDH, who got surgically treated in Clinic of Neurosurgery, University Clinical Center of Kosovo. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study that included 137 patients with CSDH who had been treated during the period 2008-2012. The data were collected and analyzed from the archives and protocols of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo. Patients were analyzed in many aspects such as age, gender, etiological factors, clinical features, localization, diagnoses, methods of surgical interventions, recurrences and mortality of patients. Results: From 137 patients with CSDH, 106 (77.3%) were males and 31 (22.7%) females. Average age of patients was 62.85 years. Analyzed according to the decades, the highest number of causes with CSDH was between 70 and 79 years (46%). The head trauma has been responsible for CSDH in 88 patients (64.3%), while the main symptom was headache (92 patients or 67.1%). One burr-hole trepanation with closed drainage system has been used in majority of cases (in 101 patients or 73.7%). The recurrence of CSDH was 6.5%, whereas mortality 2.9%. Conclusion: CSDH is more common in elderly patients. The male-female ratio is 3.4:1. Like other authors we also think that treatment with one burr-hole and drainage is a method of choice, because of its simplicity and safety.

Technological changes have been associated with the evolution of computer and telecommunications systems. These changes have resulted in a rethinking of teaching and learning methods in the new digitalized environment at all educational levels. This rethinking motivates some teachers to design new digital tools that support students in their learning process, offering them an easier and more entertaining way to obtain knowledge. The digital learning tools are software and informatics programs that make everyday activities easier for students. We have designed four digital learning tools for the learning of inferential statistics that allow college students to perform hypothesis tests for: i) the arithmetic mean of the population, ii) the proportion of a population, iii) the difference between two arithmetic means, and iv) the difference between two proportions. These digital learning tools are products from the project “Statistics-to-Go” that is being developed at the University of Sonora. This project is now in its fourth stage.

The aim of this study was to evaluate morphological characteristics of pressure ulcers, methods of surgical treatment and its effectiveness in the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital. Material and methods. A retrospective data analysis of 139 patients with pressure ulcers treated in the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital, from January 1996 to January 2007 was performed. Results. A total of 139 patients were surgically treated for pressure ulcers at the Clinic of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital, from January 1996 to January 2007. Eighty-one patients were treated repeatedly (from 1 to 7 admissions; M=1). Pressure ulcers were healed completely in 94 patients who underwent surgery during the treatment in the hospital; in 45 patients who underwent surgical treatment, pressure ulcers were partially healed, and on discharge from hospital, only small wounds were left. Pressure ulcers most commonly occur in tuber ischii area (69 cases). The mean age of patients was 42±13.65 years (M=31); pressure ulcers were for 8.9±8.5 months on average (M=31). At admission to Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital, the mean size of pressure ulcers was 42.62±53.27 cm2 (M=10). The results showed that the size of pressure ulcers depends on the duration of paraplegia (P<0.05). In 93 cases, pressure ulcers were treated using myocutaneous flaps; 17 of them were closed with V-Y advancement technique over the sacral area, 35 were closed with m. gluteus rotation flap, and in 41 cases, V-Y advancement technique using hamstring flaps was used. Conclusions. In patients with paraplegia, the first pressure ulcer occurs after 74.79±61.34 months from the onset of the disease. Pressure ulcers most commonly occur over tuber ischii area. The most effective surgical treatment of pressure ulcers is closure of the wound using myocutaneous flaps (use of the hamstrings); fasciocutaneous flaps were the most commonly used method in patients who underwent surgery for the second time.
