A robust control scheme is proposed for the position control of the electrohydrostatic actuator (EHA) when considering hardware saturation, load disturbance, and lumped system uncertainties and nonlinearities. To reduce overshoot due to a saturation of electric motor and to realize robustness against load disturbance and lumped system uncertainties such as varying parameters and modeling error, this paper proposes an adaptive antiwindup PID sliding mode scheme as a robust position controller for the EHA system. An optimal PID controller and an optimal anti-windup PID controller are also designed to compare control performance. An EHA prototype is developed, carrying out system modeling and parameter identification in designing the position controller. The simply identified linear model serves as the basis for the design of the position controllers, while the robustness of the control systems is compared by experiments. The adaptive anti-windup PID sliding mode controller has been found to have the desired performance and become robust against hardware saturation, load disturbance, and lumped system uncertainties and nonlinearities.

This work deals with the design and comparison of two adaptive position control schemes with a classical PID controller for fully constrained and redundant planar robots. First, a novel method based on inclusion of virtual cables facilitates the linear separation of the uncertain parameters from the input-output signals. Then, two Lyapunov based adaptive controllers based on the sliding mode and PD schemes are designed to compensate for the structure matrix uncertainties, which result from errors in the anchor point locations. Finally, the adaptive controllers are evaluated and compared with a classical PID controller through simulations for a desired 2D singularity-free pose of the mobile platform. The simulation results have shown that the adaptive PD control scheme has the best performance for both fully constrained and redundant cases.

SUMMARYThis paper proposes an adaptive robust impedance control for a single-link flexible arm when it encounters an environment at an unknown intermediate point. First, the intermediate collision point is estimated using a collision detection algorithm. The controller, then, switches from free to constrained motion mode. In the unconstrained motion mode, the exerted force to environment is nearly zero. Thus, the reference trajectory is a prescribed desired trajectory in position control. In the constrained motion mode, the reference trajectory is determined by the desired target dynamic impedance. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of proposed control scheme.

The novel contribution of this article is to propose a neural network–based sliding-mode control strategy for improving the position-control performance of a tendon sheath–actuated compliant rescue manipulator. Structural design of a rescue robot with slender and compliant mechanical structure is introduced. The developed robot is capable of drilling into the narrow space under debris and accommodating complicated configuration in ruins. Dynamics modeling and parameters identification of a compliant gripper with flexible tendon sheath transmission are researched and discussed. Moreover, the neural network–based sliding-mode control scheme developed based on radial basis function network is proposed to improve the position-control accuracy of the gripper with modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. The stability of the proposed control system is demonstrated using Lyapunov stability theory. Further experimental investigation including trajectory-tracking experiments and step-response experiments are conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed neural network–based sliding-mode control scheme. Experimental results show that the proposed neural network–based sliding-mode control scheme is superior to cascaded proportional–integral–derivative controller and conventional sliding-mode controller in position-control application.

A design scheme that integrates fault reconfiguration and fault-tolerant position control is proposed for a nonlinear servo system with friction. Analysis of the non-linear friction torque and fault in the system is used to guide design of a sliding mode position controller. A sliding mode observer is designed to achieve fault reconfiguration based on the equivalence principle. Thus, active fault-tolerant position control of the system can be realized. A real-time simulation experiment is performed on a hardware-in-loop simulation platform. The results show that the system reconfigures well for both incipient and abrupt faults. Under the fault-tolerant control mechanism, the output signal for the system position can rapidly track given values without being influenced by faults.

This paper describes an analysis of an opto-pneumatic control system and an improvement of control performance of the system. The opto-pneumatic system consists of an optical servo valve, a pneumatic cylinder and a cart. First, we built an analytical model of the system considering a nonlinear friction where exists in sliding parts. And we confirmed the validity of the proposed model by comparing theoretical results with experimental results of the characteristics of optical servo valve and cart position control. Then, we applied a sliding mode control scheme compensating a steady-state disturbance to multi- position control and follow-up control of a cart. By computer simulation, we confirmed that the control performance of opto-pneumatic control system was improved by using this control scheme.

This paper proposes two different adaptive robust sliding mode controllers for attitude, altitude and position control of a quadrotor. Firstly, it proposes a backstepping non-singular terminal sliding mode control with an adaptive algorithm that is applied to the quadrotor for free chattering, finite time convergence and robust aims. In this control scheme instead of regular control input, the derivative of the control input is achieved from a non-singular terminal second-layer sliding surface. An adaptive tuning method is utilized to deal with the external disturbances whose upper bounds are not required to be known in advance in the inner loop. Secondly, a nonlinear disturbance observer based on the integral sliding mode with adaptive gains is proposed for position control, which is known as the outer loop. Stability and robustness of the proposed controller are proved by using the classical Lyapunov criterion. The simulation results demonstrate the validation of the proposed control scheme.

SUMMARYThis paper presents a fractional-order sliding mode control scheme equipped with a disturbance observer for robust impedance control of a single-link flexible robot arm when it comes into contact with an unknown environment. In this research, the impedance control problem is studied for both unconstrained and constrained maneuvers. The proposed control strategy is robust with respect to the changes of the environment parameters (such as stiffness and damping coefficient), the unknown Coulomb friction disturbances, payload, and viscous friction variations. The proposed control scheme is also valid for both unconstrained and constrained motions. Our novel approach automatically switches from the free to the constrained motion mode using a simple algorithm of contact detection. In this regard, an impedance control scheme is proposed with the inner loop position control. This means that in the free motion, the applied force to the environment is zero and the reference trajectory for the inner loop position control is the desired trajectory. However, in the constrained motion the reference trajectory for the inner loop is determined by the desired impedance dynamics. Stability of the closed loop control system is proved by Lyapunov theory. Several numerical simulations are carried out to indicate the capability and the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Robotic pick-and-place operation is planned for handling hard objects with on-off control gripper. It does not have force monitoring capability for safe grasping soft objects. Current force/torque sensor is too expensive and difficult to implement. Here, a low cost embedded control structure is designed with distributed FPGA robotic position control and gripper Arduino force control kernels. A model-free intelligent fuzzy sliding mode control strategy is employed to design the position controller of each robotic joint and gripper force controller. Experimental results show that the position and force tracking control errors of this robotic system are less than 1 mm and 0.1 N, respectively for pick-and-place different soft foods.
