The reflection and transmission of elastic waves in porous piezoelectric plate, overlying a porous piezoelectric half space and underlying a fluid half space, is studied. The constitutive and governing equations are formulated for porous piezoelectric materials. The expressions for the mechanical displacements, electric displacements, stresses, and electric potentials are derived for porous piezoelectric plate, porous piezoelectric half space, and fluid half space. The boundary conditions are described for the studied model. The behaviour of reflected and transmitted amplitude ratios relative to frequency, incident angle, thickness, and porosity is observed numerically. The impedance mismatching problem between the dense piezoelectric materials and the surrounding medium can be solved by the inclusion of porosity in dense piezoceramics.

The effects of piezoelectricity on the interaction of waves at fluid-poroelastic interface are studied. The constitutive equations and governing equations are formulated and their solution is obtained. The boundary conditions are described at fluid-solid interface. The effects of various parameters on the angle of refraction, amplitude ratios, displacements, electric potentials, and vertical component of slowness are studied numerically for a particular model. The results obtained are in agreement with the general laws of physics.

Amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted elastic waves from a plane interface separating a viscous liquid half-space and a micropolar elastic solid half-space, are obtained in two cases (i) when longitudinal wave propagating through the solid half-space is made incident at the interface and (ii) when “coupled-wave” propagating through the solid half-space is made incident at the interface. These amplitude ratios have been computed numerically for a specific model and results obtained are presented graphically. It is found that these amplitude ratios depend on the angle of incidence of the incident wave and the effect of viscosity of the liquid on amplitude ratios is noticed. The problem studied by Tomar and Kumar (1995) has been reduced as a special case of our problem.

AbstractThe present paper investigates the propagation of quasi longitudinal (qLD) and quasi transverse (qTD) waves in a magneto elastic fibre-reinforced rotating semi-infinite medium. Reflections of waves from the flat boundary with surface stress have been studied in details. The governing equations have been used to obtain the polynomial characteristic equation from which qLD and qTD wave velocities are found. It is observed that both the wave velocities depend upon the incident angle. After imposing the appropriate boundary conditions including surface stress the resultant amplitude ratios for the total displacements have been obtained. Numerically simulated results have been depicted graphically by displaying two and three dimensional graphs to highlight the influence of magnetic field, rotation, surface stress and fibre-reinforcing nature of the material medium on the propagation and reflection of plane waves.

Summary An indirect boundary element method (IBEM) is developed to model the two-dimensional (2D) diffraction of seismic waves by a fluid-filled crack in a fluid-saturated poroelastic half-space, using Green's functions computed considering the distributed loads, flow, and fluid characteristics. The influence of the fluid-filled crack on the diffraction characteristics is investigated by analyzing key parameters, such as the excitation frequency, incident angle, crack width and depth, and medium porosity. The results for the fluid-filled crack model are compared to those for the fluid-free crack model under the same conditions. The numerical results demonstrate that the fluid-filled crack has a significant amplification effect on the surface displacements, and that the effect of the depth of the fluid-filled crack is more complex compared to the influence of other parameters. The resonance diffraction generates an amplification effect in the case of normally incident P waves. Furthermore, the horizontal and vertical displacement amplitudes reach 4.2 and 14.1, respectively. In the corresponding case of the fluid-free crack, the vertical displacement amplitude is only equal to 4.1, indicating the amplification effect of the fluid in the crack. Conversely, for normally incident SV waves at certain resonance frequencies, the displacement amplitudes above a fluid-filled crack may be lower than the displacement amplitudes observed in the corresponding case of a fluid-free crack.

abstract The scattered field generated by normally incident body waves in a system of layers having small, but otherwise arbitrary, periodic deviations from plane parallel boundaries is shown to consist of superposed plane body and surfacetype waves. Results of numerical computations for two like half-spaces separated by a sinusoidally corrugated single layer, and by two layers, reveal the variation of the amplitude of the field with ratios of velocities, densities, impedances, and with those of depth of layers and wavelength of the boundary corrugations to the wavelength of the incident wave.
