Attribute reduction is one of the most important problems in rough set theory. However, from the granular computing point of view, the classical rough set theory is based on a single granulation. It is necessary to study the issue of attribute reduction based on multigranulations rough set. To acquire brief decision rules from information systems, this paper firstly investigates attribute reductions by combining the multigranulations rough set together with evidence theory. Concepts of belief and plausibility consistent set are proposed, and some important properties are addressed by the view of the optimistic and pessimistic multigranulations rough set. What is more, the multigranulations method of the belief and plausibility reductions is constructed in the paper. It is proved that a set is an optimistic (pessimistic) belief reduction if and only if it is an optimistic (pessimistic) lower approximation reduction, and a set is an optimistic (pessimistic) plausibility reduction if and only if it is an optimistic (pessimistic) upper approximation reduction.

Granular Computing has emerged as a framework in which information granules are represented and manipulated by intelligent systems. Granular Computing forms a unified conceptual and computing platform. Rough set theory put forth by Pawlak is based upon single equivalence relation taken at a time. Therefore, from a granular computing point of view, it is single granular computing. In 2006, Qiang et al. introduced a multi-granular computing using rough set, which was called optimistic multigranular rough sets after the introduction of another type of multigranular computing using rough sets called pessimistic multigranular rough sets being introduced by them in 2010. Since then, several properties of multigranulations have been studied. In addition, these basic notions on multigranular rough sets have been introduced. Some of these, called the Neighborhood-Based Multigranular Rough Sets (NMGRS) and the Covering-Based Multigranular Rough Sets (CBMGRS), have been added recently. In this chapter, the authors discuss all these topics on multigranular computing and suggest some problems for further study.

In this paper, a new incremental knowledge acquisition method is proposed based on rough set theory, decision tree and granular computing. In order to effectively process dynamic data, describing the data by rough set theory, computing equivalence classes and calculating positive region with hash algorithm are analyzed respectively at first. Then, attribute reduction, value reduction and the extraction of rule set by hash algorithm are completed efficiently. Finally, for each new additional data, the incremental knowledge acquisition method is proposed and used to update the original rules. Both algorithm analysis and experiments show that for processing the dynamic information systems, compared with the traditional algorithms and the incremental knowledge acquisition algorithms based on granular computing, the time complexity of the proposed algorithm is lower due to the efficiency of hash algorithm and also this algorithm is more effective when it is used to deal with the huge data sets.

Rough set theory has been proposed by Pawlak as a useful tool for dealing with the vagueness and granularity in information systems. Classical rough set theory is based on equivalence relation. The covering rough sets are an improvement of Pawlak rough set to deal with complex practical problems which the latter one can not handle. This paper studies covering-based generalized rough sets. In this setting, we investigate common properties of classical lower and upper approximation operations hold for the covering-based lower and upper approximation operations and relationships among some type of covering rough sets.

Intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) rough sets are the generalization of traditional rough sets obtained by combining the IF set theory and the rough set theory. The existing research on IF rough sets mainly concentrates on the establishment of lower and upper approximation operators using constructive and axiomatic approaches. Less effort has been put on the attribute reduction of databases based on IF rough sets. This paper systematically studies attribute reduction based on IF rough sets. Firstly, attribute reduction with traditional rough sets and some concepts of IF rough sets are reviewed. Then, we introduce some concepts and theorems of attribute reduction with IF rough sets, and completely investigate the structure of attribute reduction. Employing the discernibility matrix approach, an algorithm to find all attribute reductions is also presented. Finally, an example is proposed to illustrate our idea and method. Altogether, these findings lay a solid theoretical foundation for attribute reduction based on IF rough sets.

Granular computing (GrC) is a label of theories, methodologies, techniques, and tools that make use of granules in the process of problem solving. The philosophy of granular computing has appeared in many fields, and it is likely playing a more and more important role in data mining. Rough set theory and fuzzy set theory, as two very important paradigms of granular computing, are often used to process vague information in data mining. In this chapter, based on the opinion of data is also a format for knowledge representation, a new understanding for data mining, domain-oriented data-driven data mining (3DM), is introduced at first. Its key idea is that data mining is a process of knowledge transformation. Then, the relationship of 3DM and GrC, especially from the view of rough set and fuzzy set, is discussed. Finally, some examples are used to illustrate how to solve real problems in data mining using granular computing. Combining rough set theory and fuzzy set theory, a flexible way for processing incomplete information systems is introduced firstly. Then, the uncertainty measure of covering based rough set is studied by converting a covering into a partition using an equivalence domain relation. Thirdly, a high efficient attribute reduction algorithm is developed by translating set operation of granules into logical operation of bit strings with bitmap technology. Finally, two rule generation algorithms are introduced, and experiment results show that the rule sets generated by these two algorithms are simpler than other similar algorithms.

The main idea of rough set theory is to extract decision rules by attribute reduction and value reduction in the premises of keeping the ability of classification. This paper presents the design of model for customer division based on rough set, and uses algorithms for attribute reduction and rule extraction in rough set to analyze the customer of supermarket. This paper also introduces how to achieve the minimum result of attribute reduction and decision-making via decision-making report, winkling redundant attribute and over-rule of decision.

The reductions of covering information systems in terms of covering approximation operators are one of the most important applications of covering rough set theory. Based on the connections between the theory of topology and the covering rough set theory, two kinds of topological reductions of covering information systems are discussed in this paper, which are characterized by the belief and plausibility functions from the evidence theory. The topological spaces by two pairs of covering approximation operators in covering information systems are pseudo-discrete, which deduce partitions. Then, using plausibility function values of the sets in the partitions, the definitions of significance and relative significance of coverings are presented. Hence, topological reduction algorithms based on the evidence theory are proposed in covering information systems, and an example is adopted to illustrate the validity of the algorithms.

Rough set theory is one of important models of granular computing. Lower and upper approximation operators are two important basic concepts in rough set theory. The classical Pawlak approximation operators are based on partition and have been extended to covering approximation operators. Covering is one of the fundamental concepts in the topological theory, then topological methods are useful for studying the properties of covering approximation operators. This paper presents topological properties of a type of granular based covering approximation operators, which contains seven pairs of approximation operators. Then, topologies are induced naturally by the seven pairs of covering approximation operators, and the topologies are just the families of all definable subsets about the covering approximation operators. Binary relations are defined from the covering to present topological properties of the topological spaces, which are proved to be equivalence relations. Moreover, connectedness, countability, separation property and Lindel?f property of the topological spaces are discussed. The results are not only beneficial to obtain more properties of the pairs of covering approximation operators, but also have theoretical and actual significance to general topology.

Attribute reduction is an important topic in the research of rough set theory, and it has been widely used in many aspects. Reduction based on an identifiable matrix is a common method, but a lot of space is occupied by repetitive and redundant identifiable attribute sets. Therefore, a new method for attribute reduction is proposed, which compresses and stores the identifiable attribute set by a discernibility information tree. In this paper, the discernibility information tree based on a lower approximation identifiable matrix is constructed in an inconsistent decision information system under dominance relations. Then, combining the lower approximation function with the discernibility information tree, a complete algorithm of lower approximation reduction based on the discernibility information tree is established. Finally, the rationality and correctness of this method are verified by an example.
