A single-layer, dual-port, dual-band, and dual circularly polarized (CP) microstrip array is designed for satellite communication in this paper. The operating frequencies are 8.2 and 8.6 GHz with a very low ratio of 1.05. First, a rectangular patch element is fed through microstrip lines at two orthogonal edges to excite two orthogonal dominant modes of TM01 and TM10. The very low frequency ratio can be realized with high polarization isolations. Then, a 2-by-2 dual-band dual-CP subarray is constructed by two independent sets of sequentially rotated (SR) feed structures. An 8-by-8 array is designed on the single-layer thin substrate. Finally, by utilizing one-to-four power dividers and semirigid coaxial cables, a 16-by-16 array is developed to achieve higher gain. Measured results show that the 16-by-16 array has 15 dB return loss (RL) bandwidths of 4.81% and 6.75% and 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidths of 2.84% and 1.57% in the lower and the upper bands, respectively. Isolations of 18.6 dB and 19.4 dB and peak gains of 25.1 dBic and 25.6 dBic are obtained at 8.2 and 8.6 GHz, respectively.

A single-feed dual-band circularly polarized stacked microstrip patch antenna with a small-frequency ratio is presented. Two pair of orthogonal slits is cut on the lower circular patch for achieving circular polarization and truncated corner square patch is used as the upper parasitic element. The frequency ratio of the dual-band is 1.03. The 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 1.3% for the upper band and 1.1% for the lower band. Proposed structure is fabricated on the FR-4 epoxy substrate and fed by SMA connector. The measured results are in good agreement with the theoretical and simulated results. The antenna shows stable radiation characteristics in both bands of operation.

A dual-mode circular polarization selective surface (CPSS) cell based on a modification of the Pierrot cell is presented for single-layer dual-band circularly polarized (CP) reflectarray antenna design. To achieve dual-mode CP discrimination performance, the improved three-dimensional geometry and the high-order resonances of the CPSS cell are utilized. The required phase shifts in both modes are obtained by varying the cell rotation angle. A single-layer dual-band reflectarray operating with orthogonal CPs has been fabricated and tested. Measured results show the peak gains of 25.2 dBi at 11.6 GHz with 31% 3 dB axial ratio (AR) bandwidth and 26.5 dBi at 14.6 GHz with 32% 3 dB AR bandwidth, respectively. The measured efficiency is 41.2% at 11.6 GHz and 55.5% at 14.6 GHz.

AbstractThis paper presents a novel design of a low profile circularly polarized (CP) metasurface (MTS) antenna with in-band radar cross-section (RCS) reduction property. The MTS is loaded as a superstrate on slot antenna and it can be viewed as a polarization-dependent MTS (PDMTS). The rectangular patch-based PDMTS is analyzed using characteristic mode analysis to find two orthogonal degenerate modes, which produces CP waves. Linearly polarized slot antenna is used to excite the PDMTS. The performance of PDMTS loaded slot antenna is analyzed numerically using full-wave analysis method. The PDMTS CP antenna is fabricated and its performance is tested experimentally. The proposed antenna has a compact structure and it has an overall size of $0.52{\lambda _0}\times 0.52{\lambda _0} \times 0.078{\lambda _0}$ (where ${\lambda _0}$ is the free space wavelength). The measured results show that the PDMTS antenna achieves $-10\,{\rm dB}$ impedance bandwidth of 29.41$\%$, 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 9.05$\%$, broadside gain of 6.34 dB, and monostatic RCS reduction of $-30.2\,{\rm dBsm}$ at the resonant frequency of 5.86 GHz. The simulated results are in well agreement with the measured results and it is well suited for C-band Radar and Satellite communication.

This paper presents dual-band operation of a single-feed composite cavity-backed four-arm curl antenna. Dual-band operation is achieved with the presence of the asymmetrical arm structure. A pair of vacant-quarter printed rings is used in the feed structure to produce a good circular polarization (CP) at both bands. The cavity-backed reflector is employed to improve the CP radiation characteristics in terms of the 3-dB axial ratio beamwidth and broadside gain. The proposed antenna is widely applicable in dual-band communication systems that have a small frequency ratio. Examples of such a system are global positioning systems.

Abstract A bilayer split-ring chiral metamaterial converts the linearly polarized wave, into a nearly perfect left or right-handed circularly polarized wave. The proposed antenna is intended to operate at center frequency of 5.80 GHz with switchable polarization capability. The polarization re-configurability is achieved by electronically switching of two PIN-diode pairs, which are embedded into bilayer split-ring Chiral Metamaterial. The optimized length of rectangular patch is 16 mm and width is 12.1 mm. Two types of radiation characteristics offered by the proposed antenna; left hand circularly polarized in mode 1 and right hand circularly polarized in mode 2. Measured results show that its impedance bandwidth is 155 MHz from 5.70 to 5.855 GHz for both mode 1 and mode 2. The measured axial-ratio bandwidth is 100 MHz from 5.75 to 5.85 GHz for mode 1 and 110 MHz from 5.73 to 5.84 GHz for mode 2. Antenna has LHCP gain of 2.52 dBi and RHCP gain of −23 dBi in mode 1. RHCP gain of 2 dBi and polarization purity of about −20 dBi is obtained in mode 2. The proposed antenna has simple structure, low cost and it has potential application in field of wireless communication (i.e., WiMax, WLAN etc.).
